Bug Reports for Sunday 7/21 Update

In addition to the dashboard being kind of wonky and only showing a seemingly random assortment of tasting notes, it also now does not bring edited tasting notes to the top anymore. This includes teas you might log but not write a note for, but then go back later to add a note. If those notes show up on the dashboard at all, they are buried a long ways back.

K S said

I wrote a review but it was eaten, so it appeared as logged but no note. I edited this to add my note – for once I remembered to cut and paste. It did not show on the dashboard. I edited a second time and now it shows up.

Dinosara said

Interesting… going to my tealog (where it appeared no problem) and hitting edit and saving (without changing anything) have caused it appear on the dashboard.

I noticed this as well. I have to edit the tea note twice to get it to appear on the dashboard. Also, if I’m viewing my tealog and edit a note, I used to be able to click “Edit” right away again if I made a mistake. Now the “Edit” button disappears if you click it once and I have to reload the page to get it to show up again.

Anna said

I second what CHAroma wrote.

Jason select said

The tasting note is probably related to cacheing. If you refresh the dashboard (command + R, or hitting the little browser refresh button) when you’re not seeing a new tasting note, does it show up then?

For the missing edit button, what browser is that in?

Anna said

I’ve only had a chance to try it out in FF today, so FF for me.

I’m using Chrome.

Jason select said

We think this is fixed now. There might be some legacy things that are out of order (caused by the old logic of showing edited tasting notes), but everything should be showing up. And moving forward it should be working normally.

Jason select said

CHAroma, did you just see that problem again (around 7:15pm EST) or did you just post then to tell us what browser it was in? If you’re still seeing it, let me know.

Oh, it appears to be fixed. I was just posting to say what browser. Thanks!

I also unsubscribed from this topic (I must have not unchecked the notifications box when I posted once, though I usually remember to) and am still getting email notifications whenever someone replies which is really annoying. I don’t really want to send all steepster mail to my spam folder.

same here, it really is starting to get annoying isn’t it, oh well maybe it be fixed soon :)

Jason select said

Should be fixed now! Lots of bugs to report :)

Angrboda said

Now I seem to have accidentally subscribed myself and can’t unsubscribe… I hadn’t even seen that little ticky box was ticked there. Can we please not have it ticked by default?

Anna said

Whenever you make a new post, it automatically subscribes you, I think. Depending on your set preferences for notifications, you’ll get notified by mail and/or site notice.

Angrboda said

Yeah, but it didn’t do that before. Before it would give you notifications automatically if somebody replied under your reply, but not if people replied in general to the thread. If you wanted that you had to press the subscribe button.

Uniquity said

+1 to making it not automatically ticked if possible. Thanks!

Anna said

Oh, right – sorry, Angrboda – the whole ‘was this working before the update or not’ issue is still a bit murky for me.

After getting a bunch of application errors, it’s like the likes have reset on the dashboard. Everyone’s are still there but you have no idea if you actually have liked it already because the heart is not filled in.

momo said

I also can’t edit this

Just wanted to add that I noticed what Anna posted earlier where the drop down box from searching seems to be working like a roulette wheel, and I have had a problem with the application error when posting my most recent note. Thankfully it went through so I think the problem more is in loading things after the fact as I had the problem with posting just now too. The address bar would confirm the post was there but the page was not loading.

wheezybee said

Same for me – lots of blank hearts :(

Me too! I like things and then they reset…

Jason select said

The likes should be fixed now. Let us know if you’re still seeing issues though.

Also, are you still hitting the application errors when trying to log a tea?

I think some things are partly due to a lag I’ve noticed in the site. So the page will load, but then a lot of the other things within the page will take a while. Like sometimes I will load a tea page, and it will take a few minutes to recognize it as in my cupboard, or I load the discussion page and it will take maybe 30 seconds to load the blue color around the discussions I haven’t clicked on.

I think this is part of the problem with the search… its just not loading fast enough to keep up when you write in it, and then people get impatient and change what they’ve written before it loads, so then it goes totally bonkers. If I am searching for Butiki’s Mi Xian Black, it works best if put in “butiki” followed by a space, then wait for a bit until just the butiki teas come up, then put in “xian” or “black”, then give it a bit. Sometimes a space after the word is key, even if you aren’t typing any more. The first results that show up are usually the results based on just a fraction of what you type because it hasn’t processed that you typed more yet.

Uniquity said

There is a definite lag – I also have trouble posting comments or editing tasting notes right now because the site will time out before anything has actually changed. Annoying, but always seems to go with the territory when there are updates. Hopefully Steepster will be back to full steam ahead soon!

Anna said

I wonder if the lag also affects the ratings slider – I think someone above mentioned there are different personal ratings on the individual tea page, as compared to what is displayed on the tealog. (Right now, for me, the site has stopped responding to my attempts to edit tea ratings altogether, but this seems to also be a lag issue.)

Jason select said

We’ve dropped a lot of the speed optimizations out of this release while we fix the bugs. Once we’ve got those nailed down we’ll reimplement the speed stuff so the site should, in theory, be much faster than before, and these issues shouldn’t be a problem any longer.

Ratings slider is a separate issue though. That’s likely related to cacheing, which we’re also working on.

Dinosara said

Understandable! Thanks for working so hard to get all the bugs sorted out, guys!

Angrboda said

I never thought to use the search by that way, with the brand first! That’s so much easier than doing it name first. It’s much faster finding the correct one. Thanks for the really helpful tip, Dinosara!

The site is completely unusable on Internet Explorer on my work computer (Which has a high level of security setting). Whenever I open a discussion, the text flashes briefly and then I am left with:

username said 2 hours ago

On the same computer using google chrome I had the sign-in problem others have mentioned.

Angrboda said

I have trouble with Explorer at work as well. I can’t use a different browser there because only the IT department is allowed to mess with the computers, and I’m not sure telling them I want a different browser so that I can get on Steepster is really going to fly. :p (Also we only have IE8 there, because… Well, because… Erm… Nobody understands this actually. We generally only get an upgrade of these things when we can go from completely obsolete to nearly obsolete)

Anyway! I was playing with it a bit today (slow day) and I’ve come to the conclusion that the dashboard appears to work okay, but I have trouble with the discussion boards. I can see the front page alright, but if I click on a topic I get a message that something doesn’t work and the tab starts trying to reload the page. It appears that this happens only if it’s a topic that has replies to it, such as this thread. If it’s a topic with no replies, like for example the Steepster FAQ post, it loads okay.

I thought perhaps it was still a cookie problem so I tried clearing cache and cookies, but since it’s extremely limited what we’re allowed to do with computer settings, I’m not sure if it actually DID so. It didn’t solve the problem anyway.

(I suppose now you’re going to tell me I shouldn’t be wasting time on the internet when I’m at work anyway…)

darby select said

Me too!!!! I can get on with my iPad but not oon my computer even with cookies and everything cleared which I hate doing! Now I have to try and remember all my info.

Jason select said

Hey Guys, what version of Internet Explorer are you using?

Firewalls at the office can always be a problem and we won’t necessarily be able to fix that, but we’ll look into it.

We’ll also have to look into the replies/no replies discussion thing, Angrboda. Is it still happening?

Dr Jim said

IE 9.0.8112.16421 running in Windows 7

I’ve never had trouble before the latest change, and I can access the site, I just get the weird thing with the “2 months ago” messages.

It isn’t a firewall issue because I tried using the work laptop outside the firewall and got the same effect

Angrboda said

Jason, it was all day yesterday, definitely. We have IE8 at work and one some ancient version of windows. XP, I think, if that’s relevant.

I can’t check it today, as it’s my day off. (Have I ever mentioned that I just luuuuuurve Wednesdays? :D) I’ll have a look tomorrow and get back to you.

Angrboda said

Checked it at work today, and it still behaves in the same way.

None of the ratings that I added to teas yesterday are showing up, although the brewing info (time, temp) is.

Jason select said

Is this still happening? You’re sure you added ratings?

Another short cut, instead of clearing your cookies, is to click http://steepster.com/logout or type that into your address bar. That should log you out and allow you to login again, which should solve that issue.

K S said

Jason – Feel kind of stupid asking but has the log out always been in the pull down menu in the upper right hand corner? I was looking for that very feature yesterday and never stumbled on to it. I saw login all over the place.

Jason select said

@KS: It has always been there, though I could see how it could be missed :)

But what you could have been experiencing was the login bug lots of people have been seeing. What’s actually happening in that case is that you are logged in because you still have a valid session cookie from before the update, but the site is mistakenly showing you the site like you’re logged out (showing “sign in” and “log in” instead of your regular profile links). That’s why you would have been seeing the login links all over. Sorry about that.

I’m still getting the notifications even though I’ve unsubscribed an unchecked the box.

Jason select said

You’re talking about notifications for this discussion, right?

Yes, I didn’t check the box when I posted yesterday and then even deleted my original comment to get it to stop and I’m still getting the notices.

Jason select said

Oh…are you talking about notifications on your dashboard (like in the notices tab) or are you talking about email notifications?

Jason select said

If you’re talking about notifications on the dashboard, those can’t be turned off. Those are based on things you’ve participated in (like someone comments on your tasting note, or someone comments on a tasting note you’ve commented on).

Yeah, I keep getting all the notices for this thread even if its not in response to my comment. And I didn’t check the box.

All my teas are showing up in my cupboard now (hooray) but they all say I have drunk them at least once – even though I haven’t.

Also, there’s no option to sort any more (by most drunk, most recently drunk, company name, etc.) which was very useful.

Jason select said

Is this still the case?

What I’m actually seeing now is that it says I haven’t logged any even though I have….

The sort was removed temporarily because it was causing problems. Planning to bring it back when we can.

Anna said

All my teas are still listed as drunk once, both FF and Chrome, caches and cookies emptied.

Debbie select said

Yup. Still the case.

(Am I supposed to get an error message if I go to ‘Places’, search for a place, and enter only the name of the store and no location?)

Jason select said

Yep, that’s correct ;)

No, that’s not supposed to happen. Adding it to the list, good catch!
