From DAVIDsTEA

There’s no better way to warm up a chilly winter day than a hot cup of chai. The combo of rich black tea and exotic spice is like a cup of pure comfort. And this spicy black tea blend turns up the heat even more with a sweet and creamy hint of vanilla. It’s as cozy as a teddy bear wearing a scarf. In front of a roaring fire. While cuddling with a puppy. Try it with milk and sugar for a warming treat that’ll have you wishing for snow.

Price per 50g: $8.50

I would have to try this back to back with David’s other chais to have a true comparison, but on its own this is a pleasant blend. More sweet and cinnamon than spicy, this is a comforting cup and would go well with milk or as a late. The vanilla is forward, more creamy than vanilla-bean flavor, followed by a gentle black tea base and cinnamon accents. As the tea cools, there’s more of the herbal licorice root at the aftertaste, again sweet rather than sour or too herbal. All in all, a nice chai, though I prefer my chais with more of a ginger kick.

2021 Sipdown 1/365!
(DavidsTea 1)

Giving this whole 1 sipdown/day thing a shot again, as my tea stash gets out of control (this pandemic has not been good for self-control on the tea-buying front, and DavidsTea now being online only hasn’t helped).

Dual goals here too – I’m also trying to run through my entire DT stash to take stock of what I have, get rid of some duplicates, and locate some prime iced tea candidates instead of focusing only on teas I’ve recently purchased.

That all said – this tea is gross and a terrible example of vanilla chai. It’s a licorice-heavy spiced black tea, and even with milk it was unpleasant. I was sad to see that my very-out-of-date spreadsheet suggests that I have more of this somewhere else, so this is not the final farewell I was hoping for.

That sounds truly awful! I just ordered a Vanilla Chai from Cuppageek that I have high hopes for!

Welcome back, Kittenna!

Kittenna

Thanks tea-sipper!

Ashmanra – it’s really not good for someone who doesn’t like licorice. Had they called it Licorice Chai, I think it would have been closer (but I don’t know that there are enough other spices even for that!) Hopefully the version you’re getting is more accurate – Vanilla Chai sounds so appealing!

I tasted it as a TOTD today and I liked it. It’s a bit sad that I decided not to buy black teas anymore (I drink coffee in the AM and after that I’m looking for something with weak caffeine). Otherwise, I would have bought it. I loved its sweetness and the hot spicy final. It’s a win for me :)

Meh.

It’s okay. I’ve had better, I’ve had worse. The licorice was really present, and it just didn’t knock my socks off. I added a touch of almond milk to try and bring out the creaminess, but it didn’t work. Oh well. It won’t be hard to drink the rest of my 20 g, but I don’t feel the need to buy more.

Backlog – I sipped this down last night as a latte with 1% milk. It was really good, and didn’t upset my stomach! This was a tasty tea to try, but with the ridiculous amounts of tea I currently have and the better chai blends, I doubt that I will restock this. Still, it made for a warming fall/winter blend! I’m drinking this one poured over milk and it actually is quite nice. The vanilla is definitely the strongest element though the chai spices and present yet balanced in the cup. Unfortunately, the aftertaste is a whole lotta licorice and for that reason I won’t be getting anymore after my 10g sample is done. Still, it’s not bad.

OMGsrsly

Thank you for the licorice warning. I didn’t think to check the ingredients for this one, and probably would have just picked up 10g without thinking.

I’ve only had one cup at home, and a latte from the store, but I am disappointed in this tea. You certainly can taste the chai, but the vanilla is fairly non-existent. I am regretting buying a whole tin.
