From Yogi Tea

Breathe Deep Tea is certified organic and features a blend of herbs and spices formulated to enhance healthy breathing. This healing formula utilizes organic thyme, an herb whose active ingredient, thymol, helps to loosen phlegm and relax the muscles of the respiratory tract. Breathe Deep tea also includes organic Australian eucalyptus (eucalyptus globulus) and elecampane (inula helenium), pungent herbs that clear the mucous membranes and are beneficial to total respiratory health. Organic basil acts as a warming, adaptogenic herb traditionally used to support the respiratory system and help the body adjust to stress. Organic ginger root soothes the stomach and aids with digestion. The formula is also enhanced with Organic Mullein, a cooling herb soothing to the mucous membranes. Yogi Teas recommend that Breathe Deep be sweetened with a teaspoon or two of honey, which has been traditionally known to support the body’s expectoration process.
In ancient India, yogis developed a sophisticated herbal healing system; a wisdom that Yogi Bhajan brought to the West in 1969 and used to create Yogi Tea. We combine this ancient system with the findings of modern science, choosing ingredients that are certified organic and not genetically modified, to create healing formulas to serve you: body, mind and spirit. To ensure the purity, quality and efficacy of this healing formula, Yogi Tea heat-seals each tea bag and cello-wraps each box.

I definitely think this tea is an acquired taste. There’s a lot of flavors going on, and it can be overpowering at first. As for the claims that it helps with breathing, I neither support nor negate the claim because I never really drink this enough to notice if this helps me breathe better. I really wanted to give this tea another shot, so I tried another cup and I still found the taste too strong. I’m not really a fan of minty undertones followed by a sweet aftertaste, BUT drizzled with honey, this tea tastes better. Maybe if I mix this with other herbal teas, it will taste even better?

I have trouble with my sinuses year round, and was a bit skeptical that this tea would even put a dent in them. However, I was surprised how effective it has been. The flavor of the tea is a little on the sweet side, but overall I find it pleasant.

I have found that if you are a little congested 1 bag for 10 minutes and drink while hot. However, if you are in a bad way try 2 bags in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Hope it works well for you.

I’m feeling a little under the weather tonight so I thought I’d see what Yogi could do for me.

I like the herbal, dry medicinal scent of the bag in the package. First sip of this is gross. Thick and syrupy. Oh, licorice root is the first ingredient. Well that clears up quickly because of the other ingredients. On subsequent sips, they present a drying, herbal quality which cuts the sweetness. The licorice does hang around, though, around my salivary glands, back of the tongue and because of the sinus opening qualities of the eucalyptus and thyme, it also wafts up into my sniffer. Blergh. I’d be more content if it stayed in just the mouth.

This tea seems fine for 1) light stuffiness or 2) stuffiness that is so severe you won’t be able to taste or breathe into your sinuses that licorice root. Honestly, I’d rather drink two leaves and a bud Peppermint for its clean and pure menthol sinus-opening ability but the eucalyptus, thyme and tulsi are good additions to this ‘breathing blend.’ I’d like to see those 4 ingredients together.

Did the licorice root at least give you some expectorant qualities to free up some mucus from your throat?

derk

I wasn’t aware licorice root is used as an expectorant but I do know it is used to soothe a sore throat. I’m not full of mucus so I didn’t notice that effect but it didn’t give me any relief from a sore throat.

Mastress Alita

Ah. Ya, it is one of those old timey herbal remedies used as an expectorant. My favorite throat tea is a peppermint/licorice root/clove blend!

It has a very strange syrup-y taste that coats your whole mouth.. I hated it when I first drank it.. But NOW that I have a horrendous cold, I love it. For colds (sore throat/cough/congestion), it’s awesome. Not so much as an everyday treat.

This tastes like dirt today for some reason? And licorice. Always the licorice. My cold or whatever it is isn’t getting better so James broke out the ol’ Breathe Deep. He loves it. I hate it. He’s always making me drink it when I’m sick. I think he watered it down a bit so it’s not awful, but again it does taste like dirt so it’s not great either.

I bought this tea on a whim at my local whole foods. I have asthma and I figured, “hey, why not?”
This goes in the ‘not’ pile.
The scent of thyme is strong in this tea. I don’t particularly care for thyme in my teas, nor in my cooking. The second time I steeped this tea, I forgot about it for a minute too long. The licorice root became angry and it’s flavor was very syrupy-sweet at the tail notes. The eucalyptus was also a bit much. I did get some of the ginger as well as some indiscernible herbal flavors. Maybe the elecampane?
Another note: I don’t think it did anything for my lungs anyway.
I don’t want to give up on blends for respitory health, but I may just give up on this one.

I have found that ripe Puerh makes me feel better when I have asthma difficulties, by this I don’t mean I breath much better, I just feel better.

TeaBrat

Ephedra used to help me, before they made it illegal in the US.

TheLastDodo

Ephedra’s illegal in the US?! That’s strange, I think I used to use it as a kid. Thanks for the tip about puerh, I may have heard something about that… No hurt trying!

Definitely a uniquely flavoured tea. I love it, but I can understand why someone wouldn’t- I also love licorice tea in general.

This tea does it’s job fairly well, my lungs feel clearer and breathing feels easier after drinking a cup. I like to mix it with other teas so that it’s less intense, but I enjoy the floral-sweet aftertaste. As others have said, just inhaling the steam feels therapeutic.

A friend got this for me when I was under the weather. I think it is great! Helps out with breathing, but also tastes lovely too. Everything in it works together to make a very comforting cup.

Now I get this out anytime I’m having breathing issues or when I just need something comforting to drink. Very nice tea.
