From Yogi Tea

Breathe Deep Tea is certified organic and features a blend of herbs and spices formulated to enhance healthy breathing. This healing formula utilizes organic thyme, an herb whose active ingredient, thymol, helps to loosen phlegm and relax the muscles of the respiratory tract. Breathe Deep tea also includes organic Australian eucalyptus (eucalyptus globulus) and elecampane (inula helenium), pungent herbs that clear the mucous membranes and are beneficial to total respiratory health. Organic basil acts as a warming, adaptogenic herb traditionally used to support the respiratory system and help the body adjust to stress. Organic ginger root soothes the stomach and aids with digestion. The formula is also enhanced with Organic Mullein, a cooling herb soothing to the mucous membranes. Yogi Teas recommend that Breathe Deep be sweetened with a teaspoon or two of honey, which has been traditionally known to support the body’s expectoration process.
In ancient India, yogis developed a sophisticated herbal healing system; a wisdom that Yogi Bhajan brought to the West in 1969 and used to create Yogi Tea. We combine this ancient system with the findings of modern science, choosing ingredients that are certified organic and not genetically modified, to create healing formulas to serve you: body, mind and spirit. To ensure the purity, quality and efficacy of this healing formula, Yogi Tea heat-seals each tea bag and cello-wraps each box.

2nd cup. I figured out what this kinda reminds me of – the glue on envelopes. When I was a kid I helped my dad out with his company’s mailings and often the glue would taste good – a little like licorice candy. I’d lick a couple and then give in to my mom’s pressuring of using a wet sponge instead of my tongue.

Anyhoo, that’s what this tea reminds me of, and it brings back a happy childhood memory – although I realize now I was working for my dad for free – he had free labor! ;)

I picked this up hoping that it help clear up the last bit of bronchitis I’ve been battling. I’m happy to say that it’s been helping. It does really seem to help get the phlem moving out. I know that’s so appetizing but that’s what it’s suppose to do. Flavor…well I’m really sure if the flavor is the main concern with a medicinal tea. It’s fairly tasty. I like the sweetness of the licorice on the end of the sip like with a good licorice oolong. Reminds me of the halls commercial in the bath house…Breathe my friend!

My husband brought a box of this home for us because we’re both trying to get over bad colds. Neither of us is breathing particularly deep right now. I think it’s funny that the last time I reviewed this was a year ago… when I had a cold. Alas.

So, same thoughts on the taste- it’s herby herby herby (thyme with a hint of rosemary) and definitely licorice-y. But it does help, so it’s worth choking down even if you can’t stand licorice. It’s sort of like licking the herb shelf of a spice cabinet. Though my husband thinks I am still tasting dinner when I say this, my review last year said the exact same thing so I’m stickin’ with it.

Maybe you’re still tasting dinner from LAST YEAR did you think of that? Hmmm?

As you might recall, yesterday I took a walk in the frigid air to the store (for milk and hair dye, life’s necessities) and I believe I picked up a new friend when I was out. Yes, there is a squatter in my lungs, a friendly little cold or some sort of irritant, meaning this is a perfect opportunity to test an herbal tea while taking a break from my spriting. The Perler inspiration bug has bitten very hard.

Today we are looking at Breathe Deep by Yogi Teas is a blend of herbs to support respiratory health and includes Licorice Root, Eucalyptus, Basil Leaf, Ginger Root, Cardamon Seed, Cinnamon Bark, Thyme Leaf, Elecampane Root, Peppermint Leaf, Mullien Leaf, and Natural and Organic Flavors. Opening the wrapper you get a nice slam in the face of eucalyptus, hello cooling fumes for my lungs! Mixing that aroma with mint and licorice it makes for a sweet blend with a very strong cooling effect for my sinuses and lungs, it is very refreshing. If you are not a fan of the aroma of eucalyptus and mint, walk away now because it is crazy strong!

Steeping the tea has turned my bedroom into a lung soothing sauna, or a jar of Vapor Rub. The aroma is mostly mint and eucalyptus but there is also an undertone of green, herbal aroma with a hint of savory herbs. It is certainly a good aroma for breathing in when you are unwell.

Holy Mary Mother of Mudkips that is intensely sweet. I was not expecting that level of sweetness, it is the strange sweetness of licorice root that gives it an almost artificial taste, if you have ever chewed on licorice root you will immediately recognize that flavor. For once I actually wish a tea was less sweet, I really must be unwell…or it really is just that sweet. The mouthfeel is refreshing and cooling with a delightful tingling as it goes down. There is a medicinal aftertaste that is not very pleasant. I can certainly breathe easier, so it does its job, but the taste is not exactly pleasant. I am not sure if I actually need to drink this tea in the future, I think that breathing in the steam from the tea did most the easing of my lungs.

I don’t care at all for licorice sweetness, but maybe having this on hand to breathe might be a good plan for the winter…

TeaNecromancer

I love licorice sweetness…but not THAT much! I certainly have a feeling I will be using this for steam breathing a lot this winter!

giraffedrd

I think this tea is soothing and delicious. I certainly don’t have time for a full page write up and blog notes but I enjoy it and will purchase it again.

TeaNecromancer

It is always good to find a tea you like.

This didn’t work nearly as well as I remembered it working. I think it needs some mint in it as an addition to the licorice &c.

I happen to like proper licorice, so the flavor doesn’t bother me and it did loosen up some chest congestion for an hour or two which was nice when trying to fall asleep.

Combined with a metholyptus cough drop this would probably work wonders.

Charles Thomas Draper

Take Fishermans Friends coughdrops if they are available there. They work

Jim Marks

Heh. Probably not in Texas, but I remember them in New England.

I actually really hate cough drops (they seem to be the single most noisy product on the planet) but will resort to them when tea is failing me.

Backlogging this is another one from KeenTeaThyme. Thank you very much. This mostly tasted like the licorice and peppermint I thought everything went well together and I liked this herbal quite abit and think its really good.

I seem to be in the minority, but I love this tea. It is strongly flavored, and just breathing in the steeping licorice and eucalyptus seems to help. I have asthma and I tried this tea ona day in which I was having more trouble breathing than usual and was coughing a lot. This tea really did seems to help some, especially with calming the cough. It’s not a cure, but a bit of extra relief is always welcome. It is a pretty strong tea with unusual flavor and heavy licorice taste and smell, so it’s definely not for everyone, but I loved both the taste and the effects and will certainly be buying more.

My husband (who also has asthma) found this tea useful too. His favorite for asthma attacks, though, is Breathe Easy by Traditional Medicinals.

Squee

With your recommendation in mind, I just bought some Breathe Easy. We’ll see how it goes!

Tastes nasty — especailly for someone who doesn’t like licorice. But it can help soothe clogged sinuses and sore throats. I found it helped ease the pain of sinus headaches while waiting for the Benedryl to kick in.

Honestly, if I tea is supposed to be medicinal I care less about how it tastes (unless it’s REALLY gag-worthy) than how effective it is.

Rena Sherwood

This is medicinal, all right :-)

silvermage2000

I was wondering you have any left I would be curious to try it becuase my throat gets dry easy.

Rena Sherwood

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you, Silvermage. Sure — I could send you a couple of bags. They’re individually wrapped. My email is [email protected]. It’s best to get a hold of me that way.

This tea is pretty good. The taste is not the best but it’s not terrible either. I usually mix it with another type of tea just to give it a better flavor. It does work pretty much as intended. I get better relief just by sitting over the steeping tea bag and breathing in the vapors. Good stuff.

You mentioned that you usually mix Breathe Deep with another tea to give it better flavor, may I ask which teas you blend it with?

Charnita Fance

Well, it has been awhile since I’ve drank this tea, but if I remember correctly usually a mint green tea or an herbal berry tea like pomegranate. Anything with a flowery, berry or mint flavor is sure to help!

This tea is all kinds of weird. The ingredients are basically everything that’s good for a sore throat, but the end result tastes a lot like the way Vick’s Vapo-Rub smells. I guess that’s the eucalyptus in it? It has a strangely sweet aftertaste as well, which is probably from the ground licorice. If they ditched the cinnamon, this would taste exactly like absinthe. I added a teaspoon of honey. That improved it a bit, but I still didn’t finish my cup.
