From Den's Tea

Bancha is produced from a bottom part of tea leaves that are big and thick. Compared to Sencha, Bancha is somewhat more astringent. Nevertheless, it is appreciated in Japan for its robust flavor. Den’s Bancha Suruga is an upgraded variation, using fresh green leaves picked right after the first flush tea.

Origin: Shizuoka
Harvest: 2010 Shincha
Species: Yabukita

Tasting Profile:
Nice balance of briskness, astringency and hearty herbaceous flavor with fresh grassy aroma.

Den’s Preferred Brewing:
Water: 4oz boiled
Leaves: 2 grams or 1 heaping teaspoon
Steep: 30 sec
2nd Cup: Water boiled; Steep 15 sec

This was a sample included by Den’s from their tea of the month club. It’s the first green tea I’ve ever had that actually tastes best with boiling water. It’s fairly insipid when steeped using normal green tea water temperature but with boiling water its bright, grassy, and fresh without a hint of bitterness. Go figure. The downside is boiling water zaps most of its goodness so it doesn’t have much to offer on resteep. The best it can do is 2 infusions.

This was included as a sample in my order. I have had bancha in the past, and always hated it. It was bland and bitter. I just assumed this would follow suit. Not so! This tea was a huge surprise. It was greener than I was expecting a bancha to be. Really fresh smell.

I love this tea. It’s a shame it’s just a sample. Brewed up nicely as instructed with boiling water for 30 seconds. The second brew wasn’t as strong, prefer the first brew. This is for sure an everyday tea I could see myself drinking. So yummy, depth of flavor. Buttered spinach. Light astringency. Will buy more of this tea.

I figured I’d try something different while waiting for all the Shincha to be released. This is actually pretty good for the price. Not quite sencha and far from a houjicha but still pleasing to my taste buds. Doesn’t have the grassy or marine like element that most sencha has. This would make a good everyday tea for the price conscience.
