From DAVIDsTEA

Feeling hot, hot, hot

We take hot chocolate pretty seriously around here. It’s gotta be rich, decadent and mega-creamy. And after searching high and low for the ultimate hot chocolate tea, we finally found the perfect blend. We took a flavourful base of pu’erh and black tea, then we added real cocoa nibs and fudgy chocolate chips. The result? An uber-chocolately blend worthy of the name Hot Chocolate. Dark, sweet and totally satisfying, it’s the perfect winter treat.

HOT: This tea does not taste exactly like hot chocolate, but it does taste remarkably similar considering that it is tea! It has a dark chocolate, almost espresso top note. The metallic, earthy black tea comes through in the aftertaste. I recommend that if you re-steep the tea, you add a little bit of chocolate bits to it because the tea is much milder the second time around.
I would also like to bring attention to something miraculous: my partner, whom I have only ever known to like iced, fruity herbal tea was extremely fond of this tea hot! SO if you have a partner with a sweet tooth, try to coax them into a taste and they may also be pleasantly surprised?

ICED: I steeped this with a little extra chocolate and added milk. It tastes somewhat similar to a mocha, and there is a stronger note of espresso. The added milk (obviously) takes the chocolate note from the realm of a dark chocolate into a milkier one which is pleasant. However, I still prefer the hot version, though that could be the cold winter air clouding my judgement.

Advent calendar day 11. I wasn’t expecting this tea to actually taste like hot chocolate which is good because it doesn’t. I didn’t get much of a chocolate flavour at all. It tastes very watered down, even after a long steep time. It was okay. Not great, not terrible. I would drink this if someone gave it to me or maybe mixed with other teas but I wouldn’t buy it myself.

Day 11 of the 2016 advent calendar, and a tea I was very happy to see return this year! Funnily enough it was just yesterday that I picked up some fun single-serving hot chocolates from Vincenzo’s. I picked out Red Velvet, Gingerbread and White Hot Chocolate, where he picked out Buttered Rum and Butter Pecan. Anyways, as for the tea itself it smells very chocolaty, maybe even more than Dark Chocolate Delight.

I steeped this with less time to avoid any Pu’erh-ness happening in the cup, and it turned out well. On its own, it’s not too great, but milk and sugar really make this tea feel like a hot chocolate. While its not something that I’d consider a replacement, it certainly is a very warming chocolate tea.

Overall, I think that this is a decent wintertime tea, its fitting. I might stock up on it a bit, but I think that ultimately I will stick to the real deal.

Encore meilleur!

There are not too many pu’erh teas I enjoy – but there are a few. This has to be one of them. At first, I only liked this as a latte, but today I decided to make it hot with a little milk and sugar. (Though it could’ve done with a little less sugar) This is a nice chocolatey tea, with a nice creaminess to it. I think I’ll find myself enjoying this more throughout the winter.

Very good tea but it was a bit embarrassing to drink it because every time I would make it, someone in the office would shout « it smells like chocolate!!». This taste more like dark chocolate than milk chocolate and, even though I always hated dark chocolate because of the bitterness, I really enjoy this one! Another good chocolate tea from Davidstea.

I found Hot Chocolate by DAVIDsTEA to be a real nice treat. I didn’t know what to expect Hot Chocolate tea to taste like, so I had really low expectations going in. I was half expecting a weird hot watery chocolately mess, but surprisingly it was quite nice, given the obvious fact, its tea and not real hot chocolate.

Right away when you open the tin you’re hit in the face with the delicious smell of chocolate. Already you’re off to a pretty good start based on the aroma alone.

If you look closer you can actually see three different types of chocolate: cocoa nibs, chocolate curls, and chocolate chips. Not one but THREE different types of chocolate!

You can also see pu’erh and black tea leaves in the mix.

I want to point out that if you’ve never tried pu’erh before, this is a good tea to dip your toe in. Its not full on pu’erh so you don’t taste the full taste, but there’s enough of it where you can notice its earthy tones without it being too much in that it turns you away from it. I personally find the pu’erh and black tea combination a nice mix for this tea.

Once brewed it still has its delicious chocolate aroma. It’s a very sweet tea that is chocolatey and rich. You can also taste the stevia aftertaste. I would have preferred to add in my own choice of sweetner, but oh well.

I would definitely give this tea a try if you haven’t already. It’s one of those teas you’ll either love or hate. For me its definitely on the love side – with three different types of chocolate, a pu’erh and black tea base with a sweet finish, whats there not to like?

If steeped for a short time, you get a nice chocolaty cup of tea, but the longer it steeps more pu erh weirdness comes out, giving you a dank, musty taste. I usually steep tea for the longest recommended time for the type of leaf because I prefer strong tea, but I brew this one for only 4 minutes at most.
