Good things are brewing in the Highlands of Nepal. Like this handmade black tea, a DAVIDsTEA exclusive from a family-owned tea garden named Jun Chiyabari. From the first sip you’ll notice the tea’s rich, sweet, honey-like flavor. Even better? This little tea garden has set up a ton of community programs to benefit local schools, underprivileged families and the elderly. Now that’s good.

This was my first black tea I tried that was from the Nepal region, so I was really excited to see what this would taste like.

I didn’t want to get my hopes up so I tried not to have high expectations. I was pleasantly surprised when I took the first sip and my taste buds started to dance in delight.

Nepal Black is delicious!

When brewed it had a lovely dark golden honey/medium to dark orange colour to it. The taste itself was pretty smooth and sweet. I didn’t even feel the need to add in any milk or sweetener. At times it also felt like I could definitely taste honey.

The tea leaves also look very interesting. They are rolled, long pieces of black tea leaves. This was also a fun one to watch unfurl in my clear glass tea mug that I used.

I’ve found that most Nepalese teas are reminiscent of Darjeelings but this is much more like an Assam. It has that characteristic malty robustness, though it doesn’t have the bitterness that some strong Assams carry as I can enjoy this tea perfectly fine without adding milk to soften it. As other people have noted, there definitely a molasses undertone to it that’s quite enjoyable. DT found a good one.

This one is really nice. Some days you just need a smooth, quality black tea without all the frills.
I only had a tiny sample of this one, but I think I’ll end up going back for more. It’s something I could see myself drinking in the mornings on a daily basis. So many of the teas in the 24 days of Tea calendar were either super minty (no good for my stomach) or so sweet that I couldn’t see myself buying more. This one was a pleasant change to that pattern.

March 2023 → a shelf staple tea

One of my absolute favorite teas, if not my very favorite (at least of those still available). I’ve already finished my first cup before even finishing my note. I’ve said this before, but to me it tastes just like Hershey’s chocolate syrup. A pure delight!

Day 10/24 (Falling a little behind)

I really enjoyed this one. In fact, it’s probably my favourite straight black that I’ve ever had. A little malty, kind of sweet, kind of bready—like dipping a warm baguette in honey. No astringency at all. Might even consider picking up some of this.

Yes! I was so glad I bought a big tin of this one a few weeks ago. I think they may have used smaller leaves in the tins though, because the leaves in my tin are long. It’s definitely one of my favourites as a straight black.

Day 10/24 of 24 Days of Tea

Darn, another tea I can’t really drink :( Brewed up a big mug for my husband then took 2 gulps to do a review.

If I was able to drink black tea, I would love this one. Nice body, and a slight bit of astringency (I brewed at 200F, Bitterness would probably be eliminated if I went down to 190F). This would be nice to have in the morning, plus if I’m not mistaken this comes from a small farm in Nepal. I really like when I can get teas (green teas for me) from small family run farms :)

I’ve been a little disappointed with the teas lately. I’m not sure if it’s because they are mostly teas I’d never pick, or if they really aren’t great in general.

I’ve noticed the vast majority of the calendar is flavoured teas (whether it be fruits, spice or candy) which is DAVIDs niche. Most of the teas I own outside of the calendar are straight greens and “medicinal herbals”. Maybe that’s it?

Yeah, I still find there are some great staples with DAVIDs, but I am quickly developing a love for International House of Tea which focusses on wellness and natural, high quality ingredients. Steeped tea is ok for a couple blends, but a lot of their stuff is flavoured as well :/. Surprisingly, I’ve really enjoyed some Celestial Seasonings Tea despite them being dirt cheap.

Looks like they have a great selection. It reminds me of the little tea store I used to frequent at the mall in North Bay when I lived there. Right after I left, they were replaced by David’s Tea.

Aw, so sad :( Ironically I was talking to the owner of IHOT on facebook and she said they couldn’t have been happier when DAVIDs came to town because it got more people interested in tea, therefore their business went up in sales.

I have stomach problems + acid reflux and I find Black/pu’erh teas to be harsh on it. Green seems to be alright though so at least I have that!

What a pleasant surprise! I have never been a fan of straight black tea but this has changed my mind. This does not have the heavy malt, astringent, bitter taste a lot of other black teas have. This one is mellow, gentle, and softly sweet. It is helped along considerably by a little added sweetener like agave, but only modestly. Some of the dry tea leaves have golden tips which makes it beautiful looking, too!

Advent calendar [10/24]

I had purchased this tea long before the advent calendar, so I don’t feel the need to review it again. I find it to be a nicely flavoured plain black tea. This is something that DAVIDs seems to have issues with. Perhaps there’s no market for plain blacks when the main customer base prefers funky teas.

Which are your favourite greens from there? I’m just getting back into greens now that I’ve figured out how to enjoy them best. I’ve discovered I’m really picky about greens and whites because they seem to taste infinitely better when sipped in small cups from a large cast iron teapot.

I must admit I’m not personally into matcha, but I otherwise some of their most expensive teas are my favourites. Butterfly Jasmine + dragon Pearls are lovely jasmine blends, Gyokuro Yamishiro is so buttery (but very delicate so carful with steeping!), roasted gyokuro is a little bolder but very nice, Lung Ching was a nice, gentle, limited edition tea, and for cheaper, but still nice, grassy blends their Japanese sencha + dragonwell are both lovely. I’m also going to retry Sencha Ashikubo cause I remember that being very nice.

(you’ll notice that all of the ones I chose are non-flavoured blends other than Jasmine, haha).

double checking the website, I actually didn’t mind a few flavoured blends: genmaicha with it’s popcorn flavour, some velvet morning with it’s citrus addition, countess of seville for it’s earl-grey flavour, and it’s been a while but I remember liking cold zing for it’s lemongrass + citrus addition.

Yes! My favourite green of theirs is the dragon pearls. I have not tried butterfly jasmine. I got my mom to buy a 100g tin of it last year. It was a big step because she and my dad dislike nearly any kind of tea. I love genmaicha but I have oodles of bags of it.

No problem! I seriously recommend butterfly jasmine :) I always use my points for expensive teas so last quarter I got $60 (of butterfly jasmine) for free. It was awesome.
