From 52teas

This is a special blend of black teas with a hint of Lapsang Souchong to give it that smoky touch that you’d experience from an open fire. Flavored with chestnut and caramel and just a hint of spice to give it that winter-y kind of appeal.

Ingredients: Black teas, Lapsang Souchong, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Sunflower Seeds, and Natural Flavors.

Directions: Before brewing, turn pouch upside down and gently shake to redistribute ingredients. Measure 1.5 tsp of tea to 12 oz. boiling water. Steep 2.5-4 minutes. Allow tea to cool 10 minutes after brewing for best flavor.

Backlog from December 5th:

It’s Saturday morning. The laundry is going, the breakfast dishes have been put away, and my favorite Christmas candle is burning on the kitchen counter. It felt like the right moment to try one of my new holiday teas from 52teas’ recent Kickstarter campaign.

Of all the Christmas teas, this was the one I was most excited about when I placed my order. I’ve really been intrigued by smoky teas lately so this sounded particularly exciting. The dry leaf doesn’t smell as smoky as I expected, though there is some smoke there. I can also smell a light spice, like the faint whisper of a chai. I steeped according to the instructions on the package, but the flavor to me seems muted. I’m hoping I can get more from it by steeping a little differently next time.

Sadly, I found this one to be a disappointment.

I’m feeling a little let down by this one as well. I’ve had this a few times after writing this note but I still can’t seem to coax much flavor out of it. I was so excited when it first came out; maybe my expectations were just a little too high.

I thought i’d try this one because i know Charoma doesn’t like smokey teas but i’m ok with them. Brewed this according to directions, including shaking up my package and making sure to get a little of everything in my teaspoon. It smells lovely, but when brewed this is mostly a lapsang. i’m not picking up any of the nutmeg or other spices that would make me think “chestnuts” Soooo witholding the rating for now and i’ll try again and see what i think then.

Aww. :( I was super excited about this one (yet didn’t order because I’m cheap. :) )

Sil

you’ll still get some to try :)

OMGsrsly

Yay! But also some not yay, if it wasn’t most excellent.

Christina / BooksandTea

My experience was pretty similar to Sil’s – mostly smoke, without much caramel or nut flavour. I’ll need to try it again with some sugar, though.

This was sent to me in error. Luckily after a quick e-mail to Anne, the tea I ordered is on its way. She said I could keep this for the inconvenience. As nice as that is, I didn’t order this tea for a reason. I hate Lapsang Souchong. So please take my note with a grain of salt if that is a tea you do enjoy.

The dry leaf aroma is beef jerky. Yuck. I used 1.5 tsp steeped for 2 minutes and waited for the cup to cool for 10 minutes. The brewed tea aroma is sweet beef jerky. I’m probably smelling jerky because it’s a smoked meat, and the smokiness of the tea is reminding me of that. Y’all more experienced Lapsang Souchong drinkers will probably think this smells just fine.

The flavor? It’s not as bad as I was expecting. There’s a nice black tea flavor before that hideous Lapsang Souchong kicks in. There’s a spicy bite and some sweetness. Overall though, no, this is not for me. I’ll be re-homing the rest of this one to a friend of mine who can appreciate smoky teas. Thanks anyway, Anne!

I’m really sorry about the mix up – but glad that you’ve got the correct tea now. I was kind of going a little crazy there for those last two weeks getting the orders out.

It was a great learning experience and the biggest lesson learned is that we’re starting our Holiday promotion much earlier next year. :)

No worries. Your customer service is top notch. Not only did you let me keep this tea and quickly send out the replacement, but you also gave me another tea for free! It was very sweet and definitely made up for any inconvenience. Thank you!
