Today’s battle is between two chocolate-ish green teas (sorta): this tea and Mocha Matcha by DAVIDsTEA. Check out the tasting note for that tea here: https://steepster.com/rachel12610/posts/416153

I have actually not tried this tea yet so I was excited when I realized it was one of the random picks made by Roswell Strange.

In recent years, I have decided that even when I love a green tea, I don’t really reach for it often. When picking teas for myself, I usually go to my black tea drawer first or my caffeine free drawer if its late or I just don’t want caffeine. Due to that, I have stopped looking at the pages for green teas and white teas and oolongs on websites because I know its unlikely I would work my way through a lot. That said, sometimes flavor combinations catch my attention enough that I decide to take a chance on a tea despite the base and that’s what happened here. Weird that it did too because I am also hesitant with both chocolate and pear teas since both are difficult to get right in tea. Not sure what happened here but I ended up with 2 oz of this tea regardless.

On first sip am I happy I have 2 ozs? I am not sure. It actually nails pear. Sweet but subtle pear which is pretty true to the fruit. However, with the pear is a weird sort of top note and a touch of cocoa underneath – cocoa, not chocolate. The top note is sort of this artificial/chemical sort of twang. I am not quite sure how to describe it. I don’t love it but the pear is nice enough that I am powering through the mug. Also, I don’t know if anything screams cake to me or if its just sort of sweet pear and some chocolate.

I like mocha matcha as a latte and I am wondering if I should have made both these teas as a latte. Instead I made both plain because I thought that would make for a better comparison – win or lose though, I am interested in trying this as a latte since that might help with the twang…or it could drown out the pear. We shall see…

With all of that said, as a plain tea, this one just squeaked ahead slightly.

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.
