From Verdant Tea

This Bai Mudan is a fresh pre-Qing Ming Spring 2013 harvest from Fuding, the most famous white tea growing region in China. Hand picked and quickly processed to lock in the “fresh from the field” taste that fine white tea preserves, this beautiful tea is one of the most complex and nuanced white teas we have ever tried. Made from a mixture of silver needle white buds and young green leaves, this tea achieves a balance and fully engages the palate in a way that traditional silver needle often struggles to provide.

This spring harvest is extremely sweet like cane sugar and crisp like fresh greens, with intriguing spicy ginger notes in the background and a lychee citrus aftertaste. The body grows creamier and creamier as it steeps out. Astoundingly, we’ve steeped this tea about thirty times and it has continued to yield flavor. These leaves are also extremely forgiving for very long steepings or cold brewed summer iced tea.

this is not going to be an in depth note because i’m too jittery…. i’ve had this tea for a while but i’ve been on a green and black tea kick lately so i haven’t been drinking it.

today however is the day AP test scores came out for kids in california and i woke up about 4 times in a span of 5 hours in the anticipation for the scores. after doing extremely well (4 on us history and biology, 5 on english!!!) i’m pumped full of adrenaline!! i needed a light tea that would relax me so i picked out a random white

it’s 2am and despite being exhausted and awake at the same time, i can still appreciate how yummy this tea is. it smells sweet and creamy but also crisp, like the perfect apple. it’s nice and light and the sweetness coats your whole tongue, reminding me of the super light wildflower honey we get at our local ranch market that i like to put in my oatmeal. in fact the oatmeal seems like a good way to describe the creaminess in this too!

overall a very tasty white tea that will definitely calm down my ap test jitters :))

I sat down to have this tea on a nice day, having a two hour gap between hanging out with friends on another nice summer day. I was very well rested and it was a perfect time for tea, especially one like this. I wasn’t sure what to expect, Verdant’s other white wasn’t like any other tea with light grassy notes and light vegetal notes with some sweetness. Verdant’s was something more. And this one follows the same style.
It brewed to a dark amber color, which was very surprising and the first note is a sugar sweet taste, but not sickly at all, with notes of lychee and in the background some complex spice. This is unlike any white tea I’ve had, just like their other white tea and I am very impressed.

Smooth and floral. Not quite as sweet as the Bai Mu Dan from Butiki that I just finished, but still very good.

It’s my little girl’s one year birthday today, and it’s snowmageddon! We got about three feet of snow and they’ve declared it a blizzard because of the high winds. Luckily, we haven’t lost power yet because I really need a nice soothing, relaxing cup of tea! For times like these, it calls for Verdant Tea.

I’ve had this sample for I don’t know how long. Two years maybe? Well, you’d never know it from these beautiful leaves! They have a lovely hay aroma, dry and brewed. I decided to go for a gongfu brewing session because I don’t often get to do that with a little one running amok all day and getting into all kinds of trouble. Plus, I miss the tranquility of the gongfu ritual. This is a rare treat!

This tea is so lovely. Bai Mu Dan is one of my all-time favorite kinds of tea, and this is no exception to Verdant’s high quality products. It’s too bad it’s been discontinued because I could definitely use more of this! I had to up the brewing time much quicker than I normally would when brewing gongfu style. It’s probably due to the age of the leaf. That said, these leaves have quite a lot of life still in them! I think it makes a difference that I’m not using a strainer too. Little bits of leaf and down are ending up in each cup, and that helps to bring out a balanced, round flavor from the tea.

I’m impressed, as always, by Verdant. Now that my little baby is asleep, maybe I’ll enjoy another Verdant Tea after this one. It seems I never have a quiet moment to myself anymore, so I need to take advantage of these rare moments whenever I can!

Aww happy birthday to her!

CHAroma

Thank you! :)

tigress_al

I hear ya about those little ones, I never get to finish a full cup while it’s hot! Or brew gongfu. But they sure are cute!

rosebudmelissa

Happy Birthday to her, and congratulations to you! I have two little boys, so I know how it is to be constantly chasing after little ones. I love Bai Mu Dan as well, which is interesting since I haven’t really enjoyed any other white teas. Mine is from Butiki’s going out of business sale, so once I finish it I’ll have to buy it from somewhere else. I hope other versions live up to my high expectations!

CHAroma

@tigress_al, Yes, they definitely are cute. :)

@rosebudmelissa, Teavivre sells excellent quality teas at very competitive prices. I recommend their white teas when you run out of Butiki’s.

Fjellrev

I remember when you announced she was born (and I think you posted pictures too? I’m sure it was you. All I remember is the little one I did see was absolutely gorgeous) and that felt like it was yesterday! Time sure flies.

CHAroma

Aww, thank you Fjellrev! It probably was me. I edited the post to add another picture. :)

This is a really good white tea. Sweet hay and honeysuckle flavors predominate. I would happily buy this again!

After the Tie Kwan Yin this was a breath of delicious fresh air! Second of the gong fu list with Dinosara today.
The dry leaf smells absolutely lovely. Sweet and almost grassy, like clover flowers. Dinosara mentioned alfalfa hay and that is totally the scent! Like orchard grass hay!
First Steep, 5 seconds: Oh my, this is delicious! It smells like fresh hay with a spicy flower nectar behind it, an it’s sweet like corn is sweet, but without the corn flavor. The liquor has a really nice body and is a light, pale straw yellow. I keep expecting a jasmine flavor because of the floral notes and the familiar body, but it is definitely not a jasmine tea! The sweetness has a spicy, almost marshmallow flavor; I know that mallow flowers are mostly for decoration, but THIS is what I expect to taste when I see mallow flowers in a blend!
Second steep, 5 seconds: Scent has honey notes after the hay this time. Someone put clear, floral clover honey in this tea!!
Third steep, 5 seconds: Smells like far away sleepytime tea with sugar in it. It tastes not quite as sweet and contains a slight nuttiness to it, like an almond pastry, with a sweetness like biting into a good fresh almond.
Fourth steep, 8 seconds: Floral honey aroma with a good honeyed, almost mead-like quality.
Fifth steep, 8 seconds: This steep feels more mature, still honeyed, like an icewine. has a thicker feel, but a spring mineral water back note.
Sixth steep, 8 seconds: Clover blossom smells, clover honey flavor with a dryness on the back of the throat. I feel like it’s fading.
Seventh steep: 13 seconds: This steep is almost amber. The floral scent is back, but the flavor has lost its bright notes.
We poured what didn’t fit in our teacups into a mug for a combined steep. IT iw much flatter in flavor, with none of the glorious notes of the gong fu steeps. In general it’s much more plain. Definitely a gong fu tea.

I love that Verdant is having free shipping right now-like it’s just so awesome! Wanted to try a sample of this one and it was only two bucks, so heyy that is helping save tea money xD
I love how soft and furry this tea is-love the look of white teas. For some reason I was expecting a bit more from this tea…so I was a bit disappointed to drink it and find that it was just like all the other white teas.
Very hay-y with a touch of sweetness.
Actually not bad. Won’t mind finishing the sample, but not my favorite either.

First brew of my first white tea. Very clearly overshot my aim for ~80°C. Brew is a deep gold. Smell recalls a black tea, though I haven’t been able to pinpoint which. It also tastes like a black tea to me, though I am only on my first sips.
