Although I really can’t say I got chocolate out of this, I always enjoy matcha and this makes me happy. Thank you so much mj!

mj

I didn’t get much chocolate out of this either :-(. Maybe they default to delicate taste level for samples?

Red Leaf Tea provides a high quality and delicious matcha tea that comes in assorted flavors which can be purchased through their website: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/belgium-chocolate-matcha.html . The flavored teas provide an interesting experience for the taste buds by keeping me from getting bored while still getting a daily dose of antioxidants to keep my body healthy. I make my tea each morning by mixing the matcha with boiling water from my teapot in a thermos I bring to work and enjoy throughout the morning. Perhaps it is a limitation of how I make the tea, but by the end of the thermos, the last cup from the bottom is very dense with tea despite mixing between refills. I often mix this with some additional water to make the right consistency for my last cup. The Belgium Chocolate Matcha Tea doesn’t taste like a commercial candy bar, but rather enlightens the flavor of the matcha with the enchanting flavor of gourmet cocoa. While the tea is not sweet without added sugar, it can easily be adjusted to the appropriate level of sweetness with added sugar, honey or milk (the last of with is my favorite on weekends!). While there are other flavors of Red Leaf Tea that I do enjoy more, the Belgium Chocolate Matcha was certainly a delightful experience.

Mmm matcha. I had this on the way to work this morning, in cold milk. So good! I got this as the free sample for May. Are the free samples automatically the delicate flavor level? If so, I would get this in distinctive, or maybe even robust level of flavor. The chocolate was there, and so creamy, but I wanted MOAR CHOCOLATE. As always lol

I got mine robust when I got this flavor.

Thanks! I’ll get robust if I order this again

Now that I have milk again (I go through it so damn quickly!) I broke open my sample of this and whisked it up in a large cup! I was really expecting to love it given that it smells so rich and cocoa-y.

Sadly, I don’t think that’s going to be the case because really I thought the flavours of this were very unbalanced, leaning towards a thick, weighty vegetal seaweed/hay like flavour with a light, dusty cocoa aftertaste (more like “afterflicker” because it was gone so fast). Yuck yuck yuck! This is almost painfully close to my first matcha experiences, which were nightmares

It actually reminded me of the nasty White Chocolate Matcha bars DT sells/was selling – but without the excessive sweetness. It took me forever to finish off that chocolate bar. So finishing this matcha will be a task, that’s for sure…

Sample sipdown…not sure where this came from or what flavour level it was, nor how old it is.

So keep those things in mind :)

It looked different from the other RL matchas I’ve tried, because it was brown instead if green. Is that because of the cocoa powder or could it be a different type of matcha?

Taking all this into consideration, I did enjoy this matcha. I made a hot latte out of it with normal milk, as per my usual. It was pretty chocolatey, however there was an odd aftertaste which was slightly chemical, but that may have just been the combo of the vegetal matcha taste with chocolate.

Overall, while I had a nice cup, I don’t think I would purchase this one. I’m glad I found an old sample to try because I was considering including this flavour in a future RL purchase.

I will stick to non chocolate flavours for my matcha! Or chocolate plus something else, because I think Tiramisu included chocolate and I enjoyed that one enough to buy.

Courtney

I think they may be a different base. I ordered this one myself and I’m almost positive it was green haha.

I think I went into this with too high of expectations.

I mixed it up with some vanilla almond milk, and was expecting a sweet and kind of decadent chocolate/vanilla beverage.

Alas.

The chocolate isn’t as stand out-ish as I was hoping for (though I’d reckon that could be corrected by ordering a stronger flavor, so I’ll refrain from judgment at this time), but it is definitely there as a kind of not-quite-sweet dark cocoa flavor.

What I don’t necessarily care for is that it seems that there’s a floral element to the cup and its out of place here.

Overall, it’s not bad and I’ll breeze through the sample packet. I just don’t know if I’d go out of my way for it again. Oh well! There’s more matcha fish in the sea, I just need to find the chocolate one for me.

Cheri

I got this one Robust and I’m really glad I did. I almost wish I’d gotten it at “There’s Matcha in There?!” level sometimes. Other flavors I have ordered Distinctive. Delicate just isn’t enough flavor for me.

MissB

I’m finding Robust is the only way to go with dessert-like matchas, although this chocolate still isn’t my favorite, sadly. I reserve distinctive for the fruity blends, as I find they get floral/ick at anything higher (for me).

Stephanie

I think chocolate would be pretty easy to make by throwing some unsweetened cocoa powder into some plain matcha? Anyone know a reason that wouldn’t work??

moraiwe

Stephanie — I really like that idea. I can’t see why that wouldn’t work, but maybe I’m overlooking something? I actually mixed up some hot cocoa mix not too long ago I’m be tempted to mix with matcha now. It’d be pre-sweetened and everything then too.

This was the free Matcha sample this month from Red Leaf tea. I was really looking forward to trying this but I guess I am a little “meh” about this one. I mixed it in with some soymilk this morning to have a matcha latte. There is definitely a chocolate flavor but it seems totally obscured by the matcha flavor. It’s like drinking liquid grass with a chocolate flavor. I’ve had several of Red Leaf’s other flavored matchas and I liked them a lot better. I don’t think I would buy this one, but if I did I would definitely get the mild matcha option at the checkout.

This was a very nice treat for myself this morning. I even stopped on my way home last night to pick up milk so I could make an iced latte with it.

Delicious. Adult chocolate. I could see making this sweeter, but I didn’t need it sweet, and that would not have fit my mood this morning.

I ordered this at a robust flavor level, and I’m glad I did. I really wanted to taste the chocolate, and it’s chocolate. Not overwhelming out of this world chocolate, but it’s chocolate. Like I said, it was adult chocolate.

Hmm…this smells more floral than chocolate, and tastes more different than either. It has a weird after taste. Not sure how I feel about this one so reserving rating til a few more brews.

Made with about 3/4tsp sifted powder to 8oz of 180F almond milk. Definitely too hot to start.
