I got this as a bonus sample with my Happy Bag. It’s not something I would have naturally gravitated towards, as I tend to prefer sweet or fruity teas rather than the more savory ones. But I like it! It has a very comforting, nourishing toasted rice flavor with just a hint of the green base coming through in the aftertaste. It also has a bit of natural sweetness, which I enjoy. If this is a taste of what’s to come, I think I’m going to be very pleased with this particular purchase!

This little bag came with my January Lupicia Newsletter and ohmigoodness does it ever brew up green!! I’ve never had a matcha before and I might have to branch out after drinking this little tasty cup. Very strong toasted rice flavor which is pleasant but I must admit if I was in the mood for a genmaicha there are four or five I would reach for long before this. A tasty cup but not something I would go out of my way to purchase… I will however be looking into matcha :)

Good morning Steepster. I hope everyone has had a nice Christmas!

I think I need to try severely limiting my time here, getting sick of the constant negativity of the site not working and the old timers complaining about it. Not that people don’t have the right to complain but it seems totally futile. It’s probably a good idea anyway because I don’t need reasons to discover any new teas I might want to buy. :)

So this is a sample I got from Lupicia in the latest newsletter. I am a bit sniffly with allergies this morning and thought a green might be nice. This is reminiscent of Den’s super green, it’s a genmaicha with matcha mixed in. This is a nice mesh tea bag, the flavor is brothy/nutty with a seaweed flavor and sweetness from the matcha. It’s definitely tasty, I might save the teabag and go in from a re-steep soon.

Veronica

Don’t go! I enjoy reading your tea notes. :) The site has been very negative lately, but I’m hoping now that Jason has explained his situation that it’ll calm down some. Maybe?

Tealizzy

Ya, don’t leave us! I have also been bothered by the negativity…but I agree with Veronica and I’m hoping it will get better. The site still mostly works. Maybe it’s best to not read some of the discussion threads for now. ;)

Dustin

I tend to stay away from the discussion board and that steers me clear of most of the negativity. I mostly come on here to make and read tasting notes or to sign up for a traveling box now and then.

TeaBrat

okay thanks all :)

Ost

I like your notes! Don’t leave! D: People already don’t post many tasting notes!

Skulleigh

I like your notes too. I haven’t seen much grumbling, but I don’t go on the forums.

Jason

I just got here a couple of months ago and as a newbie I very rarely read anything on the discussion board and focus my time reading tasting notes instead. Please consider sticking around. I enjoy reading your tasting notes. Remember, for every negative person, there is a positive person!

From the (Mostly) Unflavored TTB

I love genmaicha. I was excited for this tea.

It’s not at all what I wanted. The Den’s version of this is so so so much better.

There were no directions so I went with what I’ve used before for genmaicha. It turned out just blah. Kind of bitter, tastes just off. I don’t think the matcha they used is a good one, which doesn’t help. The rice also really overpowers the green tea. It should be much more balanced.

What’s with Lupicia steeping instructions. Every Lupicia tea that I have says “boiling” water. Boiling water on genmaicha? Why would I do that? Should I do that? Do they know more than I do?
The first time I made this, I used 80C for 3 minutes – that did not work. Bitter, didn’t like it. This time I did 95C (still couldn’t bring myself to use boiling) for 1 minute. This was MUCH better. It’s still not as good as the black soybean one that I had the other night, but it’s ok. This isn’t as toasty/roasty as I would like. Good but not my favorite.
Thank you so much ifjuly for sending some of this my way.

Indigobloom

Lupicia does love their funky genmaichas!

Roswell Strange

Stacy told me once that if you like roasty Genmaicha with less of a green quality to brew it in boiling water for one minute, so there must be some method to the madness if that suggestion is cropping up from more than one source.

Dexter

Thanks Roswell that’s interesting, and this certainly was better with hotter water and a shorter steep. I just think it’s weird that ALL their tea says boiling with short steeps – flavored whites, flavored greens, everything I own.

Dexter

Indigo – That they do, and I’ve liked some of them – others not so much, but they are fun to try. :))

JustJames

of they don’t know more than you- ‘specially not about how YOU like tea! ignore em’.

Indigobloom

I’ve noticed that about steep times from other places as well but it’s more because the packaging is generic and not a specific instruction for that tea.
I had a soy bean genmaicha from Lupicia, it was a gift. Nice tea but kinda odd

TheTeaFairy

I have also noticed their parameters being all the same and have chosen to ignore them. As James mentioned, I know how I like my tea and unless it’s a tisane, I usually don’t use boiling water. And so far so good, I pretty much liked every Lupicia teas I have tried.

This is by far my favorite brand of genmaicha. Solid, aromatic flavor.

Before steeping: I could distinguish the fragrant matcha as well as the scent of roasted rice.

After steeping: I could not taste any of the matcha.. I was disappointed that this one didn’t taste any different from those available from the supermarket.

Boiling 1 min, 0 sec

Genmaichas are some of my favorite teas, and I was excited to try one with matcha mixed in – this is my first. I have to say I’m a bit disappointed that the matcha has no discernible impact on the flavor (although it does provide an awesome near-neon color!). Expectations aside, though, this is a solid genmaicha. The toasty rice notes definitely dominate; the sencha’s a bit less present here than it is in most blends I’ve tried. In general, I’d say it’s on the subtler side for a genmaicha. I am enjoying this, but it’s probably not a tea I’ll buy again since there are plenty of more flavorful options out there.
