A little after dinner tea to finish off the evening (well, finish it off before the dessert course starts. Both of my parents said this smelled like roasted seaweed to them. But to me it smells sweet and almost honeyed. Taste-wise, there is a little nut-like tartness at the end, but the front taste matches the smell of sweetness, with perhaps a little nectar or fruit or light honey, transitioning to a little vegetal as it cools.. Not an overly thin tea, it gives both a light/high taste and a darker, more substantial taste at the same time. This actually gives a nice finish to my meal.

The dry tea is an interesting-looking dark-green/grey colour shot through with silver. It has a scent sort of like hay with a bit of nuttiness. But wow does it ever change drastically when I add the water! The smell morphs into something that I can only liken to dried seaweed – some people have called it ‘fishy’ but it’s not really that – to me it smells like the nori used to wrap sushi.

The tea isn’t fishy either (thankfully) it does have a savory note to it that gives the tea more body – this isn’t a fresh, light, delicate-tasting green. It has a nutty quality to it and a sort of green sweetness aswell.

I’m not sure what I think of this tea – I don’t love it, but it’s isn’t gack-worthy either. I think I’d have to be in a particular mood to drink this tea – I don’t think it’ll become my go-to green or anything like that.

I’m not feeling this one and it’s my second time trying it. Any tea that has a description of “smelling of crab” should have thrown up the good ole warning flag. And I get it…there is a faint crab…err, krab smell.

There is a natural sweetness to this tea, but the sharp veggie dryness kills it. I’m glad this tea was part of a free sample pack…I would never re-order it. As a matter of fact, this tin will probably go into the drawer of misfit teas and wait until it can be swapped.

Any takers for the krab tea?

takgoti

Not to deter people from taking the sample off your hands, but that sounds disgusting.

TeaEqualsBliss

Oh No!!!! I just order this! I’m nervous now…

Auggy

Seriously, this sounds so odd. If you are really looking for someone to relieve you of it, I’d love to try it. Seafood and tea, all rolled into one. Hehe.

LENA

it just wan’t my cup of tea…you guys might love it.

aug3zimm, I think I can send a sample to TX. :) Just email me your home address and I’ll send it out. No stalking I promise. Although I did look at your kitty pics. My 2 cats love a good box to play in too! Do you have any teas that you might swap with me?

TeaEqualsBliss

maybe it was a bad batch!? Mine wasn’t too bad

LENA

and….SOLD…to aug3zimm!

Auggy

Yay!!! It’s so interesting to read the different reviews about it on here. I can’t wait! I’m such a nerd!

The literal translation of “xue ya” is “snow buds”, and (someone correct me if I’m wrong) it’s usually a moniker for white tea. Here it’s describing a first-flush green. The smell while the leaves are steeping reminds me a little bit of crab, though I don’t get any of that after I take the leaves out. 2 1/2 minutes at 180 degrees this time around, but I have a feeling it’ll take a bit more trial and error to bring out the awesome.

Oolonga

Thanks for sharing that “xue ya” means “snow buds”!

Not sure why but this one reminds me of Ali Shan a little bit. It does have a sweetness to it before and during the steep. It’s also a little buttery going down. I am liking it but interested in oversteeping as well so time will tell…so far I like Ali Shan better…but this one is fairly good too.

TeaCast

I’m undecided to whether I like buttery teas or not, it’s strange to like them, because, well, it’s BUTTER. Liquid butter is not my cup of tea :)

Cofftea

I thought it had a pu erh-esk aroma and taste to it… light, but still slightly fecal.

TeaEqualsBliss

Well, one thing I did notice and I wanted to do a follow up to my post…I noticed that if the cup sits a while the taste gets more bitter (and that’s even without over steeping) I can’t imagine what it would taste like over steeped now…oye!

Cofftea

I wouldn’t know, what it tastes like if it sits. I took one sip then chugged the rest to get rid of it.

This hit me just right today. The natural sweetness, the hint of tannin… just right!

This tea isn’t bad, but it isn’t really good either. It’s got a very sweet taste without any grassy aftertaste, and it has a slight charcoal taste to it as well. While I wouldn’t describe this tea as bland, I also wouldn’t describe it as distinctive either.

Just tried this tea for the first time. I like it. It has a nice sweetness to it and smells good to me. Its nice to have another green that is not so grassy sometimes yet still has that green tea undeniable taste.

The last of the sample. I might buy it again some day. The second steeping is better than the first.
