Steepster Bug Status Thread

Maybe this is just part of the functionality of the Dashboard which we haven’t had for… close to a month now? But I’m no longer getting e-mail notifications for comments left by others on my tea posts like I used to.

I think you are right, because I have been missing people’s comments on my notes, or replies to my comments. Very annoying. And of course, when I comment on a note from years ago, nobody notices at all, unless they happen to be searching for that exact tea, and writer, and checks the comments.

Yes, I also sent a private message yesterday to someone who isn’t on Steepster frequently and have a sneaking suspicion they probably never got an e-mail informing them of the PM, so who knows when (or if!) they will see it.

Mastress Alita, I haven’t been getting emails when discussion posts have been updated, so I suspect you’re right.

I just got this reply:

Our Tech Team reached out with a follow-up question.

They said, “Do you know exactly how to describe the dashboard issue?” They’re asking for explicit information so they can attempt to replicate the issue you’re reporting.

Thank you for being so helpful!

Well… This certainly doesn’t inspire much confidence… ^^’

I did give a detailed response but the fact that the dashboard is empty seems like a pretty obvious issue ha ha.

Obvious if you’re logged in and follow someone. If they don’t have dummy logins here, it would be hard to re-create such issue for them.

Exactly, as Martin says, if you join the site and don’t Follow any other users, I imagine your Dashboard would always be empty.

Agreed, they’d need a dummy login to figure this out. However, this has been an issue in the past and they’ve always been able to fix it. I wonder what’s different this time. Is anyone else finding that Steepster is slow to load today?

Also, I remember there being a way to view tasting notes without the dashboard, but I’m not sure what it is. I’m not having much luck with Explore.

Tech Guidance The dashboard IS loading, but it is NOT displaying the user’s notifications And without that, we have no way to view notifications. If there was a button at the top of the dashboard template for notifications, that would help. [By notifications, we mean a listing of new tea notes posted (chronologically) for only those users we are following, plus any comments added to those tea notes, plus discussion topics which have new postings for which we have participated in the past. This is distinct from the notifications that might be emailed to us if indicated in our user preferences.]

Yes the site is verrrry slow today. Very frustrating.

View notes (for Leafhopper) From the (mostly empty) dashboard page: What I’ve been doing is clicking “Explore” at the top of the page, then clicking “Browse>” at the bottom of the page. Note that this produces a chronological listing of all newly posted notes regardless of whether you’ve followed the person posting it. It would be nice if it was filterable via a toggle for those being followed. It would also be nice if it was optionally sortable by alphabetic username, by date, and by “recommended” flag.

I just go to steepster.com/recent to see tasting notes when the dashboard is down. But those will be from everyone, not just those I’m following. (I hope this comment will actually post… sometimes comments I make actually disappear now.)

TeaEarleGreyHot, thanks for the explanation. I can see tasting notes now, though it’s not as good as the old dashboard. I hope they’ll bring that back sometime.

Yay! Steepster appears to be working! I’m so glad they fixed whatever was wrong.

ETA: I spoke too soon. The dashboard is showing notes from three weeks ago and is not updating with new notes.

Yes, it is showing up now. But for me it is not yet showing the activity for the past 21 days. Hopefully it is just a matter of a database update or refreshing of something. Hopefully by tomrw morn it will be all caught up!

Strangely I see some recent notes (Keemunlover and Chi-Town Anglophile) but not others (Kaylee). But hey, at least it’s progress!

I wrote a test note and it did show up, so yay!

I think that those 3 weeks of notes will never appear to the dashboard; but most importantly they are saved and available.

For what it’s worth, last night, I went back to one of my older notes from 20 days ago and edited it slightly, to see if that would cause it to show up in the dashboard. It did not. I did this again today, and added a comment as well, with no success.

But comment notifications work!

My most current Dashboard item is “Cameron B. drank Lam Dong Silver Oolong by Tonkin Handicraft” posted 20 days ago. I can still see the “new” ones on the Explore > Recent page, but they aren’t filtering to my Dashboard. I cleared my browser cookies for Steepster and re-logged in, no luck.

Alita – I just posted one, do you see it?

The only two notes I see in my feed after the one you mentioned are from Chi-Town Anglophile and Keemunlover, and it doesn’t look like you follow them. It does seem to work properly when I post a new note, so fingers crossed we see everything we should from this point forward.

I see your newest one Cameron, but I’ve been following Kaylee for a long time and “Kaylee drank Gokujo Hojicha by Ippodo Tea” does NOT appear, and it was posted after the Chi-Town Anglophile and Keemunlover ones…

I don’t see Kaylee’s note either for some reason. I was just assuming they were in the middle of fixing the problem so it wasn’t working consistently. Guess we’ll just have to keep an eye on it and see if any other notes don’t show up.

Anyone else finding the site to be rather slow? Has been for me the last few days. :-(

New notes are not going to my dashboard. GMathis and I have both posted and you can only see those notes on Explore.

Weirdly I see all of the notes except the two you posted, ashmanra, both before and after. Seems like there might have been a blip where notes weren’t making it to the dashboard…

Today I’ve been getting a lot of “Gateway time-out (error code 504)” problems, in addition to lag. 80% of page load attempts fail this way. The screen shows a green check on my browser, and a green check on Chicago Cloudflare, but a red x on steepster.com host.

Sil select said

100% it’s basically unusable unless you have 30 mins to wait for a page to maybe load.

Well I haven’t had any more 504 time-outs in the past couple of days, knock on wood.

This is the first time, I’ve been able to log in in probably over a month. Last time, I logged in and only my posts loaded. This time, everything seems to be loading but wiht a significant loading lag and most avatars are not loading.

I haven’t had any issues logging in, but half the avatars aren’t loading for me either. The site has been very, very slow. I’ve noticed that it’s particularly slow to load the tea reviews and the discussions because that’s what I tend to use most. Additionally, I’ve noticed years old discussion threads (8, 9, 15 years old) getting bumped up to the top, but when I look for the newest reply, there is nothing new. I find that super frustrating. Not sure if this will appear as a new post in this thread or as a reply to TeaEarleGreyHot – the site doesn’t do anything when I hit the reply button on that entry. Oh, Steepster, what has happened to you??

The avatars not loading, I think they may have purged a bunch of images because a lot of tea images are missing now too.

And for the forum threads, they keep mass editing old threads and adding links to their websites (teachat, teacritic, etc) to certain phrases, so that’s why they’re being bumped (editing a thread bumps it).

@Cameron B, I thought the bumps were because spammers post something and then a mod deletes it, but the thread records the changes and rises to the top. Didn’t realize Adagio was making edits too. I wonder if they suffer the same site-lag we do?

That is normally the cause, this thing where they’re editing old posts and adding their own inline links is new. If you look at one of the bumped threads, you’ll see where there’s an inline link added to the original post.

They seem to be targeting specific phrases, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re doing it directly against the database and not using the website.

Thanks for the info, Cameron B. At least that makes sense. As for the editing of the inline links, well, it’s Adagio’s site now, so they can do what they want, but it’s kind of…icky. At least the reply button works again. I ended up deleting my browsing history and hard rebooting to see if it helped and it was indeed faster. The lag may very well have been on my end.

Yeah, makes sense. I don’t like the idea of hijacking people to unexpected sites, even if teá related.

I am getting logged out every time I leave thepage on my phone, but my tablet stays signed in as always. And yes, it is slow and some of the tasting notes try to take me to the individual page if I try to “like” it instead of letting me do it from the dashboard.

It is also very irritating that they are adding links to their own stuff and pushing our most active threads to back pages.

That’s odd, I get quickly logged out on both iPad and iPhone. You must be lucky, ashmanra!
