1112 Tasting Notes

The last of my stash of this delicious, tangy, roasty, interesting tea is in my cup this morning. I’m sad to see it go and would add it to any future DAVIDsTEA orders I may place!

I’m not sure what else to call it but tangy/roasty — it’s a flavor almost like soy sauce nut butter tea! Only a few teas I’ve tried have this unique flavor profile, and this is an accessible (and organic!) example of it. Yum.

Next week is sure to be crazy (the university I work at starts classes, and I also start my class!) so I used this morning to cook some things for the week so that we have food on hand — black bean stew, Indian lentil stew, German potato salad, mini meatloaves with pasta, roasted hot peppers — one less thing to worry about! I’ll only need to made a few side dishes. I also made some mustard and BBQ sauce.

My reward? A nice sit down with a giant cup of this tea. It’s magical. So smooth, malty, raisiny-sweet and flavorful. Invigorating without being strong like your typical breakfast tea. I’m having some milk and sugar with it and it’s comforting and delicious this way. Those of you that have been around for awhile — I do believe it has an echo of Thomas Sampson to it :)

Many, many thanks to ashmanra for this tea!!!

I thought you would like this one!

Wow. You were busy this morning. :)

After reading your impressions of Organic Morning’s Journey, I’m glad I ordered 1-lb of it a few days ago.

Terri HarpLady

LooseT, I tried to contact that chick to order some, but so far she hasn’t returned my call. Gonna try again tomorrow.

looseTman

Hi Terri, Perhaps Laura took some vacation time around the holiday weekend. I sent you additional contact info for Laura. Hopefully, that may help.

gmathis

You inspired me. Meat loaf for dinner! (Latent meatloaf lust has been burning in my brain since a recent rabbit-chasing chain of posts dealt with the same subject.) Happy fall!

I was invited to a BBQ/play rehearsal last night (my husband is doing photography and an additional art piece for the performances) and I thought an iced tea would be nice to bring (along with some cookies!). I was doing some perusing of fancy iced tea recipes and came across this one:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/blackberry-bourbon-iced-tea-recipe/index.html

I just so happened to have blackberry syrup in my freezer (a failed jam attempt! Don’t worry, I got it right on my second try), loads of mint in the garden, and some bourbon stocked in the bar. It was fate ;)

It was also delicious! The Harney tea is just wonderful and only needed a few tablespoons of blackberry syrup to make it perfectly sweet (and the most lovely color). All the fancy in the world can’t mask bad tea in my opinion!.

If you make it, prepare it a day ahead and add the bourbon to the mix — all of the flavors blend and it’s not the least bit boozy or strong. I think it would be less complex but wonderfully delicious sans alcohol as well.

Sounds like a yummy drink!

OMGsrsly

I think I might have to try this. I have a tin of that Iced Tea, and I agree it’s wonderful. :)

Oh my gosh. You are amazing.

Cry. It’s gone! And so is the blueberry buckle!

Goodbye golden honey turning to milky friend. I’ll revisit you when my cupboard is once again manageable!

Blueberry buckle is also reeeeeeally good with this Darjeeling. The wineyfruity notes paired with the baked blueberries are a bit outrageous.

Absolutely delicious with homemade blueberry buckle. Just sayin’

So impressed with how this lighter, honeyed tea resteeps so well — three glorious steeps today. I think I have one more serving left in my tin — weep!

i know, it’s a bittersweet thing when a tea’s mostly done… yay, because you get to buy more and maybe others as well, but also so sad.

JacquelineM

I’ve been trying (for, ah, 3 years now) to get my cupboard to a manageable number and hope to not add any new teas now — I have a few teas with the “golden” profile which should keep me happy for awhile but oof — this one is going to be missed. Of course I don’t know what a manageable number is, but I know it is not 80 (what I currently have!)!

Ysaurella

80 with samples size teas or without ?

JustJames

@Ysaurella…. awesome follow up question!!!

gmathis

Blueberry buckle—that brings back wonderfully tasty baby food memories :) Is it like a blueberry crisp with oatmeal?

JacquelineM

Ysaurella – I have a few samples, but the majority is 1 oz or more. Some of my very loved teas, like my black dragon pearls, I have a pound!

gmathis – I didn’t use oatmeal – just a crumble topping (butter flour sugar mushed together and sprinkled over the blueberry part). There are lots of blueberry growers around here — we went to a farm on Saturday and got two pints :)

How can a tea be so delicate and so robust at the same time? Gorgeous deep molasses flavor that tastes rich steep after steep. I’m on number 4 right now and it’s so incredibly flavorful! At the same time, it’s so smooth and … not tannic or astringent. A dark sweetness is the overwhelming flavor.

So, so impressed. I think this is my favorite tea so far from the Golden Moon insiders tea club!

Many, many thanks to gmathis for this tea!!!!

First off, this is a very pretty tea. Lots of blue cornflowers, citrus peel, and other herbaceous beauties! It made me really excited to try it as one of my Earl Grey Alternatives.

It’s really nice once brewed. Citrus-y but there is something else — I thought it was chamomile. I was convinced it was chamomile. I was expecting my head to hit my desk at work at any moment until I read the description and saw that the herb-y flavor was eucalyptus! Phew! I am so relieved as I am one of those people who can talk themselves into falling asleep with chamomile. :) It’s interesting that I taste herb-y but not menthol-y as I would expect with the eucalyptus, though!

This definitely fulfilled my “something different” wish. I don’t think I’d go searching it out (I like herb-y more during the night) but I am happy to have tried it! I may combine my remaining bit with my Earl’s Garden to tone down the herb-y for work drinking.

It really does look like confetti, doesn’t it?

Platonic Ideal of Iced Tea. Seriously, seriously good. The very finest of nothing fancy, straightforward, black iced tea. I followed the directions (1 pouch steeped in 2 cups water for 15 minutes, then add 6 more cups of water, squeeze and remove bag) and I have the elusive (for me) perfectly clear wonderful iced tea of legend!!!!!!!!

(Being who I am, I couldn’t help but add orange slices and a little raw sugar!)

That sounds like you, but it sounds lovely tasty! (Our carport thermometer registering 101 this afternoon.)

Oh my! I will definitely have to try this one!

drank Lychee by Harney & Sons
1112 tasting notes

I was determined to not drink earl grey or black dragon pearls today. Absolutely determined. I dug and dug through my work tea drawer and found my Lychee tea! Perfect!

Fruity and rosy and naturally sweet. Swoony and summery. Like all the best liked things in the garden with black tea. Love.

So glad I went digging — this must be part of my hot weather rotation until the weather turns!

Earl Grey & Black Dragon Pearls are my two favorites too!

gmathis

Good iced? I have part of an Upton Lychee sample I haven’t made my peace with yet…maybe better cold?

JacquelineM

gmathis – I bet it would be good iced! My husband says all flavored iced teas taste like “flowers” so I rarely make them. He likes plain black w added oranges, lemons, limes, or mint and certain Earl Greys. Since I make big pitchers usually and love plain black with added oranges, lemons, limes, or mint and certain Earl Greys, I refrain from torturing him with “flowers” ;) (P.S. All berries taste like “flowers” too — even hot!)!

Bio

I love to cook, bake, read, paint, knit, do needlework, and garden. I need my coffee, but I LOVE my tea. I work at an Art School, and attend a large public university doing post-bac work (my BA is in English). I’m interested in the liminal spaces between art and craft, the academic and the practical, the individual and community, and the old and the new. I’m currently exploring these ideas through the disciplines of education, literature, history, and psychology.

I enjoy writing tasting notes, but have decided not to numerically rate teas as of 9/14/10. For an explanation, see my looooong tasting note about Mountain Malt from the Simple Leaf.

My favorites:
Chinese black teas
A good “milk and sugar” English style black
Earl Grey (classic, and in all variations!)
Vanilla teas (classic, and in all variations!)
Jasmine, Rose, Violet and other froofy, flowery teas!
An Occasional Oolong
Flavored Rooibos
Herbal Tisanes
