OK… so I hadn’t planned on reviewing a new Matcha today, but times they are a changin’ … so I decided to get busy and review at least one Matcha today.

Mmm! I really wasn’t too sure about this Matcha. I’m not a big cookies n cream person. I LOVE oreo cookies, but I don’t so much like them ground up in vanilla ice cream or processed into white chocolate candy bars. I’d rather eat the ice cream and oreos separately. But, because this was a new flavor, and because it was on sale, I thought, I’ll try it. It might be good.

And it is. Sweet and yummy… it’s a bit like dunking oreo cookies in a bowl of Matcha, except that I’m drinking the cookie. I love that I can taste the “cookie” – not just chocolate, but I can taste the bake-y, cake-y cookie … all that’s missing is the crunch of the oreo.

YUM! Even if you missed out on the sale for this one, you should still try it – it’s totally worth it!

ashmanra

It is on my wish list, right there with Cheesecake, French Vanilla, Bavarian Cream, Amaretto….

LiberTEAS

LOL! That sound more like a dessert plate than a list of Matcha! haha!

ashmanra

I guess that shows what I am into, right? ;)

gmathis

Try the candy corn Oreos yet? Tasty, but they don’t hold a candle to the birthday cake (buttercream) ones that were around this summer.

LiberTEAS

I haven’t tried the candy corn Oreos. I tried the rainbow sherbet ones… not the birthday cake ones. The rainbow sherbet were unbelievably good… After I opened the package and tried a couple, I hid the rest so that nobody else in the household would get their paws on it! LOL

ashmanra

Um, we actually already finished our pack of Candy Corn Oreos, though I thought they tasted like bakery birthday cupcakes. And we are almost through the orange seasonal Oreos. The seasonals seem to have a tiny bit more filling, or it is a little sweeter. We have to mail special Oreos to N. Ireland when they come out because apparently they have only one kind and that is Doible Stuff, and daughter’s boyfriend and his brother in law are MAD for Oreos.

Matcha of the day…..

Well, the kids and I chose some flavors and put in an order. Pretty sweet that it only took a few days to get here. We were not sure of the flavor level in the free samples we got, so we chose distinctive level for flavor (ours is the classic base). I have to say, the amount of flavor in this one seems kind of light, but it does have hints of a cookies & cream milkshake when made with milk and ice. I probably would have liked the flavor a little stronger. In no way does this come close to the caramel, french vanilla, or egg nog for me, though. I am pretty sure it will not be a staple, but we will enjoy it while we have it. I will have to ask my daughter’s opinion on this one.

This is another matcha that Azzrian sent me and man, this one is good. This is about as close as flavoring can get to tasting like real cookies and cream. While it’s good on its own, my favorite way to enjoy this particular flavor has been adding it to my daily vanilla Spirutein shake. It makes the shake taste AMAZING and helps give me a great boost in the morning.

Azzrian

Glad you liked it!

I don’t know what is wrong with me or my taste buds, but I did not get any cookies or cream out of this, either in taste or aroma! I prepared 1/2 teaspoon, sifted and whisked – then got sweetened matcha, but no flavour! I ordered the distinctive flavouring, and am wondering if I should have taken it up a notch. I will be trying it again another time, in case something was off in this experience, but I am a little disappointed. The aroma wasn’t even cookies and cream – it was almost more burnt sugar/creme brulee. I’m not a fan of milk at all, and don’t particularly enjoy it in matcha, but I might try that at some point to see if it brings out the creaminess. Hoping for better matcha luck with the cheesecake and strawberry flavours.

*Will rate another time after I re-try.

Babble

I didn’t quite understand the hype myself. I wasn’t too fond of the flavor and didn’t really taste much, either.

Indigobloom

Same here, I just can’t grow to love this one for some reason. It tastes rather chemical like to me

Hmm, this one is not as expected. The dry aroma is spot on Oreos. But the taste doesn’t translate. I had plenty of matcha in my sample, so I know it’s not a leaf to water ratio thing. Can you describe matcha as having leaves since it’s powdered?

Maybe Oreos and matcha just aren’t a good mix. Oh man, but now I really want Oreos. So far, caramel matcha is the clear winner in the matcha taste test. More to come later! Thanks for the sample, Indigobloom!!!

this wasn’t for me either. Glad to know I’m not the only one!

Alphakitty

I think this one is best with a black base—it pairs SO well with the chocolate and cream notes!

LiberTEAS

Matcha is powdered leaves… so I think that “having leaves” is applicable.

CHAroma

I’m tempted to buy it with the black matcha base…But the caramel matcha was so out of this world that I think I’d rather just buy an extra large package of that instead. :D

Holy moly this is fantabulous today! Mixed it up in some unsweetened almond milk (1/2 tsp matcha, almost 2 cups milk, 1/2 tsp sugar) and YUM. Not really getting “cookies and cream”, but it is definitely sweet creamy goodness.

Thank you, Cavocorax! I have one serving of this left. :)

Courtney

What flavouring level is this?

OMGsrsly

No idea. It was part of Cavo’s winnings, which were really random. :)

OMGsrsly

And it definitely smells like oreos. I am so full I don’t need to sit here sniffing oreo-like substances.

Courtney

Haha oreo-like substances. :P

Red Leaf introduced several new matcha flavors (as if they don’t have enough already), and when I saw that this was on the list, and on sale, I had to jump on it. I’m such a sucker for Oreos (even though they are so bad for me). This Matcha seemed like the perfect treat of healthy (cause its tea!) and sorta-indulging in Oreo-goodness.

As a reminder, you can get the matcha here: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/cookies-and-cream-matcha.html

I ordered the 30g Cookies and Cream Matcha, Starter (Basic Grade), Flavor: Robust. I admit that after I ordered, I saw some other Steepsters order there Cookies & Cream with the black matcha base, and honestly that sounds pretty good. I almost wish I would have thought of that. I’m interested to see what they think of it when the reviews come out. Anyway, back to the matcha.

As always, this matcha smells so delicious. The flavor is so overpowering just from a smell. You don’t really smell any matcha at all. I definitely smell the cream over the cookies, although both work together. The smell reminds me a little bit of the caramel matcha, very sweet but almost a bit creamy too.

First, I sifted the matcha. Remember how a few matchas ago I was having sifting issues? I found the perfect sifter (that’s not a sifter). I actually use one of my old tea balls that I got when I first started into loose leaf. You know, the one with the long handle that opens and closes that everyone and their grandmother has? This works great for sifting matcha. I pour in a scoop, close the ball, and then shake it around over the cup. It works great, and I’m thankful I get to put the ol’ tea ball back to use since it’s been out of commission for a while.

Before I put the water in, I took a look at the matcha. Maybe it’s just my imagination, or a trick of the lighting, but I think I saw some white particles in there along with the green – which would make sense, it is cookies and cream. I didn’t see any dark particles, though, so who knows. Anyway, I brewed my matcha as normal, added some milk, and took a sip.

As usual, this matcha is very very good. Another great desert matcha for those with a sweet tooth but who don’t want to over indulge. I don’t know if I would say it tastes exactly like Oreos, but there is definitely a creamy deserty type note to it. I will say that I preferred the caramel just a little bit more, but I think they can both stand on their own.

I got this in my BF order. I am a true die hard OREO fan. I was so excited for this one.
I like my matchas strong so I added a little more than usual. With some whole milk and some sugar.
Hmmm… Not what I was expecting.
It’s sweet and dessert like but I can’t pin point the flavor.
It’s not Oreo or cookies and cream.
But it’s not bad either. Definitely a good cup but idk.
I’m at a loss for words at what this flavor is:)

Wow, the dry matcha smells incredibly strong, like I just opened a pack or oreos, but a little thicker and creamier.

I prepared this in a way that is quickly becoming my standard, since I got some good smoothie cups to take to work: 2 chashaku scoops of matcha, fill the 16oz cup about half way with water, blend (OMG my stick blender makes this so easy – no lumps! Nice froth! No sifting needed!) fill the rest of the cup with whole milk and ice. My matcha lattes stay cold easily for a couple hours, which is plenty of time for me to drink them :)

My first impression upon sipping this one agrees with the smell of thedry matcha: the flavor is strong and noticeable. The green tea flavor is actually pretty overwhelmed. It must just be something about the Cookies & Cream flavor, as opposed to the others I’ve tried, but this is kind of like being hit in the face with a carton of cookies ‘n’ cream ice cream. It’s definitely a contrast to the Royal Bavarian Cream I had yesterday, and even stronger than my “distinctively” flavored cheesecake matcha. I found myself wondering if I somehow prepared this stronger than usual? It’s possible, but if that were the case I’d expect more green tea flavor too, and that’s not what I’m getting here.

As you may have figured out, the flavor is really too strong for my taste (even on delicate, which this is) and comes across kind of artificial to me. Boo! This is the first time I’ve had that issue with Red Leaf’s matcha – I thought maybe they were magic :/ However! The aftertaste is quite good, as if I’ve been eating that cookies & cream ice cream I mentioned and just set it down for a minute. I think I need to give this another chance, so I’ll try preparing it in the classic style (warm, whisked) as well as cold with just water – hopefully one of those will work better for me.

If you are a big cookies & cream fan, I would certainly recommend this, with the caveat to try the delicate flavor first! On the other hand, if you’ve been looking for a matcha flavor that lets you forget you’re drinking matcha – look no further! This is like a cookies & cream milkshake all on its own :P
