From Teas We Like

A fantastic example of the 8582 recipe, this is the first batch from 2005, with almost 20 years of excellent natural Malaysian storage. There is much discussion about which of the 2005 batches of 8582 is best (is it 501, 502, or 504?), but in the end, the storage is the most important determining factor, and this is the best storage we have yet tried for this tea. Concentrated oily liquor, sweet woody incense, raisins and honey; very comfortable in drinking.

1 cake of approximately 357g.

4g, 90 mL ZZZ

Rinse and wet leaf: woody, slight sweet, light smoke. A bit of incense when cooled
1. Strong, upfront incense. A bit beany sweet on finish. Light bitterness, a bit medicinal. Good texture
2. A bit medicinal, maybe plummy. Can see why the description says raisins and honey. Very tasty
3. A bit of mushroom finish and spices. Finish not super durable
4. Woody incense. Raisin
5. Leafy taste. Still some bitter in finish, so a bit of room to continue to change

A bit of warming, and comfortable to drink.

Thanks to a tea friend for the swap! This isn’t going to be something I would run to cake given the other teas available at this price point, but it is really really solid. In comparison to its MY stored factory brethren at TWL, I far prefer this sort of dark, more sweet, taste profile to the 2005 7542 and 2003 7532. Ranking would be something like this: 2005 8582 > 2003 7532 >> 2005 7542

Then again, I have been thinking about what I want out of teas at a certain price and maybe my standards aren’t quite realistic for 2025 given the age on this… there’s some real junk out there for much more. Many of the fresh sheng/shou offerings are total garbage, yet certainly not priced to reflect that…
