From Nio Teas

Smoother ceremonial matcha with some light notes of edamame and baby spinach. This matcha is made from the Okumidori cultivar, a premium tea cultivar prized for its smooth and creamy flavor. This is quite similar to our matcha washimine but with a little bit more astringency. You may notice a slight tingling on the tongue with this tea but for the most part it is smooth and sweet.

This Okumidori matcha comes to us from a small farm in Wazuka, slightly south of Kyoto. The area around Kyoto has always been famous for its matcha production, ever since the early 1200s. Still today, Uji, Ujitawara and Wazuka produce much of Japan’s best matcha, and there are many talented matcha farmers with unique styles of cultivation.

NIO Advent 2023
After the last matcha I had from this pack, I am very pensive. Granted that was a different producer. I have an amapan sitting next to me just in case. The dry color is decent. Could be a bit more vibrant. Looks to be a lower grade. Maybe better for a latte. The taste is that of a culinary or slightly premium. A bit vegetal. A bit mineral. Somewhat grassy. Definitely better for latte. Works well with my ampan.

I think I need to relearn how to make matcha. Yikes.

Woke up from a long nap after a long night at work, and thought this would be a perfect preface to a smoothie and a gongfu session. I think I maybe went too heavy on my ratio at 6g:9oz. I also was sad to find I’d chucked my matcha whisk at some point, after not having used it for several years. I used an electric frother, which maybe contributed to bitterness?

Anyway, I didn’t get the lovely spinach and edamame and hay that I was expecting. It was kinda sour, kinda bitter. I finished it because I felt like I should, but I didn’t enjoy it. I’ll come back and try to use less powder and less aggressive frothing.

No rating, I’m sure this was user error.

Now my No 1 most-consumed tea of all. Not surprised as this is my daily matcha. :)
Adjusting my rating a bit as I know about other options which are out there. Great consistent brew without spending high end ceremonial money.

Nio Teas Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 15

Whoa, this tastes so different than other matcha! It has strong grain and sun-warmed hay notes to it, rather than vegetal ones. It’s smooth and creamy with a light, dry grassiness and a touch of nori umami on the bottom end. To me it tastes very late summer/early autumn, like lazing in a field of dry wheat as the sun drops in the late afternoon, after an excellent morning’s adventure.

Really interesting and enjoyable!
