From Mountain Rose Herbs

A hearty, strong, green tea that is rolled in small pellets and was aptly awarded its title, because of its resemblance to the pellets used for gunpowder ammunitions during the 17th century. Originally rolled tightly to preserve freshness and maintain moisture during long voyages overseas, it still holds true as an unsurpassable fresh tea that is full of dark bold color and a striking taste that is unforgettable. Gunpowder tea is astringent and mildly bitter and you can add a very small pinch of Stevia or Spearmint to soften the taste. Contains caffeine.

A decent tea for the money, but as Jason noted, the astringency and bitterness can be very strong. Being careful with the steeping time helps, but really, I never managed to make this tea without it turning out at least a bit bitter. Some days I didn’t mind this at all, but other times it really bothered me. Overall I’d say it’s a tea to use sparingly, and not recommended for delicate palettes or stomachs. On the other hand, I haven’t had that many gunpowder teas, so I’m not sure whether this strong, one-note sort of flavor is typical for this kind of tea.

This Organic Gun Powder tea is wonderful. It’s my old standby for a great cup of tea. I like the back sides of the tongue bitters you get from it. Don’t over steep it cause it will be super bitter. Maybe good for some folks stomachs… but not my taste buds! It’s also a really good price. Under $20 for a pound. Get some!
