From 52teas

Tea of the Week for November 26, 2018!

I crafted this tea for all those who (unlike me) are putting up their Christmas Trees after the Thanksgiving feast. (I’m usually doing the tree thing much later!) It’s a festive orange-y chai-ish type of green tea blend of Chun Mee & Gunpowder combined with oranges, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, allspice, pink peppercorns, a few cloves and some juniper berries. It’s very Christmas-y . . . very holiday-ish . . . and very tasty!

The spices offer not just an inviting fragrance but a warm, wonderful flavor as well. The orange brightens up the cup and the green tea is pleasantly sweet. The juniper berries add just a hint of holiday pine flavor.

Very tasty – this organic, gluten free, allergen free and VEGAN tea!

organic ingredients: green teas, oranges, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, pink peppercorns, cloves, juniper berries & natural flavors

Appropriately named and quite pleasant, I had no trouble finishing off this sampler, but it’s not a tea I’d buy again. There was something in the blend that lingered after the sip was done, to which my palate mildly objected. I’m not entirely certain what it was, but there are so many blends out there—indeed, so many blends in my own stash—that I don’t feel compelled to overthink a reaction; I’m content to move on quickly and find the next blend I’ll want to keep stocked always.

The flavor is so much lighter than I expected. For my first cup, I didn’t put any sugar in. The flavor was reminiscent of gingerbread cookies, but in an extremely subtle way. It didn’t get bitter at all, which I appreciated since I was drinking it slowly throughout the day. The second time I made it, I did use some sugar, but this time, the only flavor I sensed was the rather smoky green tea base. The spices didn’t appear at all, sadly. I don’t love the base tea, and the spices are almost invisible even though there were plenty in my cup, so I’m a bit disappointed.

My cabinet was so chock full of holiday teas this year I did not even get a chance to taste this one until February.

I am very much enjoying this blend. What makes it shine is the hint of evergeen/pine flavor, that either comes from the Juniper Berries or the citrus and green tea combination. There are plenty of spicy green teas or christmas teas out there, but this little taste sets this apart from other blends I’ve tried.

This tea has chai spices without being too hot or pungent, just a warm twist of ginger and cinnamon.

My second favorite part of this tea is the dried orange. There are beautiful big slices of dried citrus in the brew, and they add a lovely candied mandarin orange flavor. This candied orange taste reminds me of another favorite tea of mine from 52Teas, their Chinese 5 Spice blend.

Really enjoyed this brew and part of me is glad I saved it until after the rush of the holidays, so I could spend more time to savor it.

I hope that you are all keeping warm – especially those in the polar vortex areas where they’re experiencing below 0 weather! Stay warm and stay safe, please!

About this tea: we only have one pouch of this tea left – so I decided to go ahead and brew what I had of this tea in my pantry and write a tasting note for it. This was a tea of the week in November – A green tea blend of Chun Mee & Gunpowder, blended with orange and warm spice.

A really nice, winter-ish blend.
