5 Tasting Notes

I bought this tea recently thinking I was getting some other Russian Caravan-type tea, but I was so incredibly delighted when I smelled the leaves and discovered that it is essentially Celestial Seasonings’ Morning Thunder tea in loose-leaf form! I grew up drinking Morning Thunder, and it is one of those teas that jogs so many memories, just by the smell alone.

I don’t re-steep this one. I think you get the best steep at about 3 – 5 minutes.

After reading some other ‘reviews,’ I’ve discovered that Lapsang Souchong is a smoky tea? I’ll have to look into that one!

The smokiness, the richness, the full flavor… I’m so thrilled with my accidental discovery!

CORRECTION: The tea I have is not a rooibos. It is a China black.

I’m still on the fence with this one. I received a year’s membership to the TeaTable.com tea of the month club and this was the first tea they sent. It’s really pungent. I can’t decide if I like the aroma or not, steeped and straight from the bag.

I think in the end it does taste better than it smells, but I’ll have to give this one another go. I got hooked on the Belgian chocolate rooibos and left the Bourbon St to the wayside. I’ll edit my review later this week.

This is my first experience with rooibos tea. I am rather pleased with it. So much so, that I am going to purchase some from the Tea Table now. I have gone through a 4 oz bag in about 1 week. I like the essence of chocolate, without it being overbearing. And if the minty hints I’m getting are classic rooibos flavors, I love how it blends w/ the chocolate essence. Mint chocolate is a classic combination, after all!

I think my favorite thing about this tea is that it looks like it’d be caffeinated, but it’s not; so I enjoy making a pot in the evening and then keeping a cup on my nightstand to sip if I wake up in the night. I also love that I can give it to my 6 y/o daughter at night before bed. She loves mint-chocolate anything (leaning more toward mint than chocolate), and this tea is proving to be perfect for her!

The aroma is not nearly as appealing as the flavor. I am not big on really fruity teas, but this one is very nice. I steeped it quickly, and filled a mug and a thermos. I’ll be drinking the 2nd half this afternoon. It’s mellow, aromatic, and simply delightful. I do not know the best temp to steep. I let the water sit for at least 3-4 minutes after it stopped boiling. The first steep was for about 8 seconds. The second, for a few more, and 2 more steeps after, totaling about 45 seconds, I guess…

Oh dear. Was this the sample I sent? If so it is a 52Teas blend. :)
