NOPE! Nope. Nope. Nope!
Me and this tea are not friends. I immediately thought stevia from the cloying sweetness that coated my tongue at first sip but turns out it is real sugar…and probably the cinnamon. And the fennel comes through and it just doesn’t belong and basically this is just one mug full of NOPE!
I got this as a sample with my Tickled Tea order. It was one of maybe two teas I didn’t pick up with my order since I don’t usually love chais (though they are growing on me now). This one smelled strongly of cardamom which had me worried but tasted more of clove and cinnamon with some cardamom as well. Little ginger to be found. This made for a nice enough latte though.

Sipdown
I iced this per the company’s suggestion on instagram and though it was better than the cold brew, it still wasn’t great. A lot of sweet Apple and some red fruit flavor that quickly transitions into a sweet rooibos flavor that builds and coats your mouth. Not for me.
Sipdown (641)!
So, I was making the last cup of this earlier this morning to drink on my way to work; and I should stress here that I probably shouldn’t have been making tea at all because I had slept in and had less than ten minutes to completely get ready and get my ass out to my bus stop. However, there I was standing by the kettle regardless…
Priorities, right.
Everything was going great, the tea had finished steeping and I’d strained everything and cleaned up the strainer and I was all set to be perfectly on time. Then, like a tired idiot, I nudged the travel mug, which didn’t have a lid on it, just enough to knock it off the counter and almost the entire travel mug of PIPING HOT tea spilled all over the floor. I quickly grabbed a towel, and tried to mop it all up as much as possible. The whole kitchen smelled amazingly of root beer deliciousness. When all was said and done, I looked at the clock and… I had missed the bus by about five minutes.
So I cabbed to work, and I only had about two swallows worth of delicious root beer tea in my travel mug after all my trouble…
Oh no! I actually very rarely drank tea at work (I.e. maybe a handful of times in the almost two years I worked there). I like to sleep in as much as possible so I just never did anything in the morning and I didn’t like waiting for the kettle in the office
How on Earth could I forget I had an untried rootbeer tea in my cupboard!?
I was searching for a completely different tea this morning to bring with me to work when I found my little sample bag of this one; I think it’s quite old now but it’s been stored well and the sample is vacuum sealed so I think it should be fine. Plus. MORE ROOTBEER TEAS!!! You can never have too many of those.
I’m drink this one now; I thought the dry leaf smelled epic when I cracked the sample open. It’s definitely one of those profiles that’s sort of an illusion though; like, you can break it up pretty easily into all the different parts/ingredients creating the overall profile (fennel and cinnamon really jump out) but when you just let go and smell it for what it creates overall it’s a dead ringer for root beer, Maybe without the ‘float’ part though? I don’t really smell any vanilla.
Steeped up it’s really nice! I totally taste root beer right off the bat and it’s well enough put together with a strong enough flavour that it’s actually kind of hard for me to break it up into individual ingredients now that I’m drinking it rather than just appreciating it for its overall taste. It’s somewhat sweet, but not as much as I’d normally associate with rootbeer. Maybe more of that “Dad’s Organic”/small batch homemade rootbeer sort of vibe? Still very smooth though.
I really don’t taste any vanilla though and I’m a little disappointed by that; I added in a smidge of vanilla agave to compensate and now everything is right as rain! With the sweetness of the agave the body/general richness has been taken up a notch to be more like actual soda pop, but with the creaminess of vanilla ice cream. A perfect recreation, sans fizziness. Don’t be mistake though, you don’t NEED the vanilla agave for it to still be a good, drinkable tea – it just ties together the namesake of the blend a little more.
Lemon? Yes. Cookie? Sort of. It’s not in-your-face or really distinct but there is more to this than just a lemon black tea. Cookie is probably a stretch but that extra component does compliment the lemon so all in all it’s alright.
I do taste a few spices that make me think cola, not really any rum. The black base is pretty basic. I enjoyed it for its nutty taste, some cocoa and milk chocolate, some cinnamon and citrus (orange?), but definitely not rum and cola.
Flavors: Chocolate, Cinnamon, Citrus, Malt, Nuts, Nutty
Winding down for bed now so decided to try this sample pack I got recently. My last one from Tickled Tea. I must say, I saved the best for last as this is one delicious cup of tea! This is by far the best tea I have tried from Tickled Tea. I usually detest lavender in tea but in this tea, it is subtle and complements the chamomile, peppermint and the lemon flavors. Who knew all those ingredients together would create something so magical. My taste buds definitely approve!
I had high hopes for this tea-especially after smelling the tea (it smelled like root beer!). The smell was the only good thing about this tea. Tried it iced and it was pretty gross so I figured maybe if it had a bit of sweetener that would help. I added some agave and I am afraid that made it worse. So I had no choice but to dump it since it was undrinkable.
This brewed a pretty pink color-thanks to the beet root. I double the amount suggested on the pack (especially since I find that teas with no actual tea in them are a tad on the weak side and Tickled Teas have been tasting weak to start off with even with tea in them). It tastes pretty good-I definitely detect apple, nuts and cinnamon mostly.
This is a slightly better mint tea than Chocolate Merry Mint. However, it has the same problem of a light minty taste-I want MORE mint-why you gotta tease me like this?! Maybe I will try adding more peppermint tea to it next time. This one has got potential. Smells wonderful though.
Cold Brew Sipdown (460)!
Put off trying this one for a long time because I was just a little weirded out by it. I mean, what does it mean that this has crackle candy in it? Like pop rocks? What could that possibly add to the tea apart from some fun initial sound that tea wouldn’t normally have and some extra sweetness? Well, turns out that the tea does indeed crackle when water it poured onto it – but when I cracked open my package most of the sprinkles had actually kind of melted and become this sticky fruity goo that was a bit of a mess. So I probably didn’t get an intense of a crackle as I’m imagining was intended.
As for the flavour, it was pretty sweet – kind of had a fruity cranberry/blueberry taste to it but with a consistent overtone of sweetness not unlike cotton candy/fairy floss. So, for me at least I spent the bulk of the brew thinking of the blue cotton candy you get around the summer at the fair/carnival. It was pretty delicious, actually! Very smooth and honestly I’d finished it off before I even knew it.
I think this one was limited edition, so it’s a moot point now but I’d definitely try this one again if that oppertunity arose. It was interesting, and I’d be curious to see what would happen with the crackle candy if it wasn’t melted down already/a goopy mess and if you brewed it hot rather then letting the candy dissolve over a longer period of time as a cold brew. Kind of like ‘tea science’, I guess…
Doesn’t taste like a s’mores in my opinion but it is a tasty tea made as a latte with added agave as a sweetener. Not one I would rush out and buy more of though, so I am glad I only bought a sample pack of this one to try out. I love companies that let you try a small amount to see if you will like it instead of committing to 50 grams. Citizen Tea also lets you buy sample packs for cheap-I ordered like 22 teas from them to try out.
