Tea Shop Recommendations in NYC?

I’m going to NYC in January for a super quick trip and am trying to think of must see tea shops. I know Harney’s is there, which I’m so-so on. Bellocq is on my must visit list. Any others y’all would suggest?

I would say Ippodo but I think they’re in the process of moving so it’s probably not open. :(

That’s too bad! It looks like they have been closed for over a year. I’ve been to NYC once before, but it had several tea shops that have closed since I visited. Kusmi had two locations, Palais and David’s were both there. NY doesn’t seem big on tea.

Yeah I was just there and wasn’t wooed by any of the tea shops, unfortunately.

If you like unflavoured tea, T Shop, Tea Drunk, and Té Company are all good bets. They’re also very pricy.

Thanks! I’ll look into them!

Tea Drunk doesn’t exist as a retail shop or tea house anymore, which is a shame since Shunan is super knowledgeable as well as being a lovely person. She tried different things during the pandemic to survive, but ultimately had to close up shop. That being said, Tea Drunk does do pop-up tea tastings from time to time. I recently was at a mid-Autumn festival tea tasting with mooncake and other goodies. I would highly recommend any sitdown with her. Follow Tea Drunk on IG to find out when the next event is, or you can go to the website. I always learn something!

I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve never bought from them, but they seem to be well regarded.

I have a list of the places I’ve reviewed on my blog organized by neighborhood. It help with finding tea places that are near where you’ll be in the city.

Can vouch for the usefulness of that list! Specifically would plus-one Te Company (pineapple linzers are a must-try); Kettl; and Cha-An. Floating Mountain is very peaceful but I tend to want a little snack with my tea and last time I checked they don’t have any food.

Cool, thanks!

Can vouch for TShop! I stopped by last summer and plan to again next time I’m in NY this winter. I would book an hourlong Tea journey session if you have the time. I really enjoyed tea with Hyun when I was there and I’ve heard fantastic things about Theresa too.

Have also heard good things about Kettl, if Japanese teas are your thing.

It really just depends on how much time you have and if you have a car. I was there for my brothers wedding so didn’t have a ton of time and the only shop we went to happened to be completely coincidental. SerendipiTea. I ended up not going to tea places like I was hoping cause whoa expensive

No car and only there for two days, so it’s a really short trip! I’m not going to have time for tea sessions. :(

Gotcha. Sorry about that. But definitely also understand. If you do find anything let us know

This may be too late, but I love Té. I’ve visited a couple times on trips to NY, and have really enjoyed their teas.

I’m back! It was such a short trip. I was only able to make it out to one tea shop!

So, Dustin, which one tea shop did you make it to? Don’t keep us in suspense! ;)

Oh! Sorry… the workshop I teach is this week and is super time consuming! No time for internetting. I went to Bellocq since it was first on my list. Harney’s was walking distance, but I wanted to explore a new company. I really need to do another trip in the spring or fall (when it isn’t 15F), spend at least a week out there and visit other tea shops as well as go back to my new favorite tikibar, Paradise Lost!

Wow – you made it out to Greenpoint? Good for you! Bellocq is a nice choice – I love the way they set up the atelier. I’ve found that their breakfast blend is beautifully done and one of my favorites.

I don’t think I checked out their breakfast blend! I went home with The White Wolf, Milk Oolong, The Queen’s Guard and Bellocq Christmas. The space was such a nice break from the bitter cold! So warm, cozy and inviting. Almost like a little cottage!
