From Zen Tea

A fine and expensive type of shaded green tea from Japan. Tea leaves for Gyokuro are grown in the shade for 20 to 30 days before harvest, which differs from the standard sencha in being grown under the shade rather than the full sun.

Gyokuro has a noble mellow and sweet taste, an elegant aroma, and a light green colour. Gyokuro will undoubtedly enhance your sense of green tea.
Gyokuro was developed at Uji, in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. Among many regional varieties of Gyokuro, which is the finest grade of Japanese tea, Uji Gyokuro is said to be the best.
Origin: Uji, Kyoto, Japan
Preparation( water): 2 teaspoons, less than 1 min, 70C(158F)

Ashmanra’s sipdown challenge – April 2023 Tea #5 – A grassy tea

A Zen tea that I have never written a note for, and it looks like no one else did either.  I think I bought this because it was on sale during their closing (or at least, their sale for not selling teas anymore, rather than only teaware.)  It doesn’t get much grassier than gyokuro.  It looks like fresh spring grass clippings.  The flavor is okay, but obviously the nuance at this point is missing. I bet it was much better… many… years ago. Tastes a bit like matcha, a bit like sweet corn.  I was intending to finish this tea for the prompt, but it’s such a rarity at this point, and I don’t have much Gyokuro otherwise, I think I won’t be in a rush to finish it.  I wish I had gotten around to writing a note years ago…

I miss a few of their teas. A lot of their tea ware stays sold out, too, but I have enjoyed everything I have purchased from them

ah yes, I probably ordered more from Zen than from any other tea shops (well, maybe tied with Butiki & 52Teas.)
