From Zen Tea

Its smell and appearance will make your mouth water. It has a scent of cinnamon and spices, and shows a golden brown color. It makes medium spicy Chai with a hint of toffee-chocolate-orange-cinnamon flavour. You may feel like this Chai has some magic to it and start to make Chai right after getting out of bed in the morning. It’s an addictively wonderful blend of Chai!

Preparation (one cup): 2 teaspoons, boiling water, 5 minutes. We recommend that you steep for 5 minutes like regular black-tea brewing, which is different from our Masala Chai or Rooibos Chai recipes. Boiling Chocolate Chai in a pot with milk results in an undesirable taste.

Ingredients: black tea (40%), cassia bits, cocoa bean bits, ginger bits, orange peels, cardamom, flavourings, pink pepper kernels

I received this as a sample in the order I did just before the new year.

New tea! Sadly, I have NO IDEA what is in it. Looks like cloves, pepper, orange peel, cinnamon, ginger or licorice, maybe cacao nibs? IDK. I’ll try it anyways. Just to see.

There was 1 tbsp in the packet, which is about perfect for a 16 oz mug.

Dry I definitely smelled the chocolate. As it steeped, it smelled spicy. Drinking it with some homemade coconut creamer, it’s actually really tasty. Although… I’m uncertain as to the presence of licorice root. And there could probably be more chocolate.

I’d definitely pick up a sample pack in the future (pending ingredient knowledge) to play with a bit more. Maybe steeping it in almond milk would be good.

Woop! Got the ingredients!

Fjellrev

Neat! I’m glad to hear that they’re rolling out a new tea (and hopefully even more).

OMGsrsly

It’s pretty good! No cloves. :)

Fjellrev

Interesting! I actually love cloves, just that David’s Sugar and Spice had a weird thing going on with them.

OMGsrsly

Sometimes in chai they’re the only thing you can taste, so this was a neat alternative.

Fjellrev

Yeah, totally. Cloves and cinnamon. And maybe ginger: the three main spices which make the majority of chais taste almost the same haha.

I went into this not expecting much because I haven’t had the best of luck with their chai blends in the past, but this is better than expected. Not nearly as spicy as I would like, but it’s like nibbling on some chocolate cake with a light spiced drizzle on top. In terms of spices, I taste mostly super muted cinnamon and cardamom, but the licorice is overpowering the spices a little bit. The chocolate is realistic but not as prominent either, more like milk chocolate than anything else.

Not repurchase-worthy but it’ll be easy to sip down my sample.

I have been trying to submit this note since yesterday, but Steepster keeps showing continual “saving” without progression. I got into the habit of copying and pasting notes until I was sure they went through after Steepster would randomly “eat” tasting notes a couple years back, but haven’t seen anything since. Is this normal? Or Holiday traffic?

First of all, this sample is quite old. I found it hiding in a drawer.

Dry scent is super strong chocolate and orange. This made me a bit hesitant, as I like chocolate, and I like orange, but the melding of the two has never pleased me for some reason. Shame. The next strongest scents are then pepper, clove, cinnamon, cardamom. I may also be picking up on some ginger. The orange peel chunks are as big as my thumbnail!

I had this with milk, and the 5 minute suggested steeping time causes it to not be as strong as I would like (I experienced this also with Zen’s Masala chai [which was excellent by the way], so tacking on an extra minute, minute and a half fixed it right up). Zen suggests making this like a normal black tea as “boiling Chocolate Chai in a pot with milk results in an undesirable taste”. I normally find Zen’s steeping instructions bang on, so I heeded Kenneth’s warning.

Clove is the dominant flavour, followed by cinnamon. The chocolate note is there, although not very strong. I get the chocolate note stronger in the upper back of my mouth as an aftertaste after a few sips. There’s a citrus freshness that cuts through the creamyness, but the orange doesn’t present as strong as I thought it would given the dry scent.

I wouldn’t keep this in my cupboard, but it may be because the sample is pretty old and I have been spoiled by trying the Masala Chai earlier this week; http://steepster.com/Starfish/posts/278781 It was just so darn good!

I have this saving issue often.

Usually I just copy and paste the text of my note, close the page, then go to my Tealog page. The empty note will be there, then I edit it and save, and it usually works. PITA but it’s a pretty reliable work around for me.

Lupiressmoon

I prefer cinnamon heavy chai with the clove in the background as a complement myself. Loving Zen Teas but it’s so hard to find a good-for-me Chai. It’s funny that out of all I’ve tried of Chais, I still prefer twinings tea bags as the most flavorful. So weird.

This is just ok for me. This is the second chai that I’ve had today that wasn’t really chai for me. This is black tea with a bit of spice and a hint of chocolate. It’s like the blenders couldn’t commit to the concept. I would prefer this if it were more chai and more chocolate.
Thank you TheTeaFairy for sending this one my way.

Tealizzy

I have still yet to have a chocolate chai I really liked, except for maybe RiverTea’s granny’s cake, but that is more like chocolate spice cake. The Starbucks version tastes like soap, and other ones I’ve had don’t really taste like chocolate. If you find a good one, let me know!

TheTeaFairy

I find most chai from flavoured tea company are not “real chai”. I am very curious to try the blends from Epices de Cru eventually…

Dexter

Will do – I’m still questing for my favorite chai – I’ve tried a gazillion of them and none are as good as the one that I’m hoarding because I don’t really know where I got it – and where ever it was it isn’t available anymore. Would like to just send the last of my sample to a tea blender and have some custom made – but I’m not even sure who does that.
In the meantime I will continue to try all chai that comes my way and if I find a decent chocolate one, will let you know. :))

boychik

have you tried Yogic chai? they have very good reviews

Dexter

It’s on my wish list!!! But you have to order 4oz and their shipping rates to Canada are insane. Was hoping to swap for some before committing to that much tea with crazy shipping charges. :((

Tealizzy

Rishi makes a fabulous masala chai, and I just went to their website and they do have a chocolate version! I’m gonna have to check that out sometime.

Tealizzy

Not so great steepster reviews on the rishi chocolate chai, but maybe we should just blend our own? I mean, add some cacao shells or a really great chocolate tea to a really great chai? Will let you know if I try that!

Dexter

I’ve thought about blending my own – I just haven’t even started yet, would need to do some research on the amount of each spice. If we found the blend of spices that work for us then yes, you could add it to a chocolate tea or even to something like Laoshan Black. LOL I need holidays to work on all the projects that I would like to do…

Dexter

Rishi is another company that doesn’t have great shipping rates to Canada – unless you order over 100.00 then it’s only 15.00. :((

I received this in a package from NayLynn and her son. Yum! Nice mild but tasty chai with a good dose of chocolate. I could drink this a lot! I used a little sweetener (I use stevia vanilla drops) and it was very satisfying! Resteeped once, still good.

My first chai, thank you MissB. Before this cup I was hesitant to try chai. When I had asked a friend about it they only told me that chai was “spicy”. Ask the boyfriend, I don’t do spicy well, which is unfortunate because he is a big fan of heavily spiced, Cajun, type foods.

I added a small splash of milk. This seemed to bring out a cinnamon flavor. Very enjoyable for my lazy morning.

I’m very cautious about chai myself. I’ve had it a couple of times and I’m just not sure about it. It was okay the one time I had it, and the other time I hated it. I don’t know what kind it was either time.

Kayla

I’ve been so lucky with samples. I don’t want to buy a tin of something that I am unsure of. I didn’t know there could be so much difference between teas of the same type, enough that it was okay one time and then not so much another!

Cheri

I like samples a lot. It gives a great way to try a tea, and then if I really like it, I can order more. I’ve been ordering a lot of sampler sets, too.

Kayla

Have you tried Della Terra’s sampler? You get to pick specifically which ones you want to try. —> http://www.dellaterrateas.com/custom-try-me-sampler/

Cheri

I have not. It looks like a great deal. I’ll probably hold off a little bit as I’ve got three orders I’m still waiting for.

Trying something new from the various Traveling Tea Boxes or swaps has really helped me try new things so I can order things without worrying too much. If you haven’t done swaps or the TTB you might want to try it. I just finished trying from samples from the Tea and Card TTB. There were 62 different teas in the box. It was unbelievable. :D It seems that there are new TTB that open up pretty frequently. They do fill up really fast so if you want to try it, get your name in quickly. Also, lots of people are willing to swap teas.

Cheri

I haven’t done swaps, because I don’t yet have enough to swap. I’m down for the TTTTB (my first!) and I bought a sample box from KallieBoo’s stash. I’m keeping my eyes open for TTBs for sure.

Kayla

62 teas in one TB! Wow. I am also participating in the TTTTB as my first TB :).

Ooh, chocolate chai? Are you going to be my new favorite? It came in a pretty tin and looked delicious – large pieces of caradmom and black tea, with other spice bits in the mix. Brewed and hot, I found the tea almost chewy in texture, like there was something solid that had dissolved. Cooled (as it is now), it’s divine. Strong chocolate flavor with the spices in the background, mostly smooth cardamom with only a hint of ginger. It’s mild on the heat scale, and while I prefer my chai’s a bit spicier, this definitely hits the spot.
