From Zen Tea

A top specialty and a real rarity! This nice, fine, pine needle-shaped leaf with many silvery tips comes from the central highlands, south of the city of Kandy in the Dimbula district. The taste is highly aromatic and spicy with a note of its own, reminiscent of mild, malty Assam leaf teas. The cup is dark red with a malty and spicy bouquet. Everyone who loves exquisite qualities must try this tea at least once!

Price: $10 / 100g

I’m trying to try all of the new-to-me teas because I am one person away from getting the tea box! I can’t wait. This seems to be another cut-tear-curl blend but I don’t think Zen mentioned that in their description. I like to have a couple of these on hand, since they are good for 1)caffeine and 2) the strongest flavor possible. It wakes you up! The tiny leaves are black with a bit of gold occasionally. This one is nice for a cut-tear-curl. I steeped for just two minutes both times. The first steep was a bit more astringent than the second steep and I could probably steep these leaves a dozen times and get a nice flavor. The flavor is tough and a bit like rye bread. The dried leaves smelled like a dry field. This is a nice one but there are SO MANY nice teas at Zentealife.com. I think their sale is still running! I’d definitely be buying some more if I wasn’t overrun with teas right now!

I couldn’t remember the name of this tea all day! I looked on the re-vamped Zen Tea website and found that this one was off their list. Ah, just as well. Not as big of a fan of this as I could be. But, I did only cold brew some for work today, which may be the reason. I will have to review this tea when I try it a different way. I think I originally purchased this with the thought of using it in the espresso machine at work, because of all the teeny tiny spindled leaves. I will have to update when I do!
This tea brewed up a light rust liquor with a mild spiced raisin note, along with the usual malt and citrus. I may have underleafed here, but it may as well have been the method of preparation. The brew was a little weak and lfatg for my taste. I know it must be better, because ZTL would not have added the “special” to the same for nothing. I have a few more servings to go, so I will have to find out if there is anything truly special about this tea. Because cold brew sucked the life out of it.

At three and a half minutes, it already tastes a little astringent. That said, it’s also malty and full; with milk and sugar it would probably be lovely. On its own, though, not anything too special. The instructions do suggest adding milk and sugar, though, so it it up front at least.

Not bad by any rate, rather malty and full-flavoured, but definitely needing something to balance it out.
