From Yunnan Sourcing

We are proud to announce our second Yi Wu area ripe pu-erh tea cake produced under the Yunnan Sourcing Brand! We used spring 2018 plantation and wild arbor Yi Wu area tea leaves that were expertly wet piled in Menghai to press this tea cake.

This is a medium-lightly wet piled ripe tea, so it’s one that will age very gradually and will take somewhat longer to lose it’s wet pile taste. That being said it’s an excellent candidate for longer term aging due to it still having alot of sheng greenness to it.

It’s not a graded ripe pu-erh, but rather just all the the different grades mixed together with only the coarsest leaves removed. The result is a rich, thick and textured tea that is both totally unique and very complex in taste, aroma and cha qi.

An interesting departure from the classic lineup of YS ripes. Wild and earthy, with dried barks, roots, and leaves. Distinct cocoa. One of the few shus I’ve had that actually reminds me of aged sheng, with that unique cola flavor. Mouthfeel varies a lot across the session, dry up front, then moderately sweet, then becoming terse again, before lightening to a hui gan focused sweetness. Enjoyed this and its contrast to the other shus in the 2018 samplers.

Scott’s description of this is pretty spot on. It is fermented on the lighter side, and it shows. There is a tart bitterness I associate with sheng, very tasty. The tea still brews up pretty dark. It is quite smooth, viscous, and very durable. Not terribly complex, but it is yummy. Good stuff.
