From Yunnan Sourcing

This tea was picked from the first flush of spring harvest high in the mountains of Simao. These tender young buds were processed in a way that is similar to how other premium small-leaf tea varietals (like Emei Sichuan Zhu Ye Qing) are processed elsewhere in China.

These leaves are best brewed in a clear glass or chahai which shows off the tendency of the leaves to line up vertically, some floating at the surface and others sinking to the bottom.

[Spring 2018 harvest]

This is a tea I received from tperez, thanks mate! I didn’t get a chance to try it fresh yet, but it seems to be the kind of green tea that stores relatively well. The dry leaves exude a light aroma that is reminiscent of sheng, meadow and various vegetables. In a preheated pot, I get more of a moss/mushroom kind of smell.

The taste is quite smooth, juicy and floral with a nice bitter finish. There are notes of grass, unripe apricots, elderberry flowers and dandelion. The tea indeed performs well even 1 year after harvest, being neither flat nor overly astringent. In the aftertaste I detect new flavours of bark, pattypan squash, edamame and fermented fruits.

The mouthfeel is creamy I’d say and fairly thick for a green tea. Overall, I enjoy this tea a lot for casual drinking, it is quite forgiving as far as brewing parameter are concerned as well. Oh, and thanks to its needle like shape, it is very pretty when brewed in glass too.

This was my first Zhu Ye Qing. I enjoyed it a lot; especially the vegetal intial, and lingering aftertaste. 8/10 would drink again.

This tea is very vegetal with a slight buttery undertone. It’s mildly sweet with just a touch of astringency. Nothing really stands out with this tea but nothing is bad about it either. It is quite pleasant but not one of those teas you need to set aside time for to savour every sip.

Also wanted to add that this tea is lower in caffeine than some other greens.

Not very sweet or floral, so look elsewhere for those experiences. A more bitter sort of brew, though that might have to do with how I made it. Good broth note.
