From Yunnan Sourcing

2011 Yunnan Sourcing “Chen Yun Yuan Cha” Wild Arbor Raw Pu-erh Tea cake

“Chen Yun Yuan Cha” (陈韵圆茶) means “Aged Rhyme Round Tea”. This lovely tea cake is composed entirely from Spring 2008 sun-dried material from two different areas of Lincang. The “mao cha” was aged in Dali town since 2008, and during that time mellowed nicely. The strong astringency of it’s youth has dissipated slightly, leaving the drinker to enjoy, sweetness, pungent cha qi, and some hints of flower aroma.

This tea being stored as mao cha in a relatively mild and dry climate will allow it to continue age and develop over the years. A few months after pressing it will change quite dramatically as the water vapor taste (from steam pressing) dissipates.

400 grams per cake (7 cakes per bamboo tong)

Spring 2008 material, May 2011 pressing

Wow, this has changed a bit over the last 3 months. Still a bit astringent, it has integrated its flavors nicely and now has a nice floral note to go with its green flavors. It is beginning to develop some depth. Good stuff.

I have a sample that’s 2011 of this cake so I assume I am leaving the review on the right tea. I had this one today and it did not impress me. It brewed up a gold colour. I was having the tea while I was working so I wasn’t mentally making notes of each infusion. It is just that each infusion did not impress me. I would brew one up, have a few sips, say “nope, not right”, and then do another infusion. I didn’t hate it but I can’t say I loved this tea either. Nothing seemed to stand out about it.

I just got home from work and was going to review some tea from yesterday while I drank this, but I’m on the third steep and this is all I have to say:

Imagine you are about to eat mac n’ cheese but someone forgot the cheese.

That’s this tea. It’s so… bleh, and something serious is missing. Just no depth and my entire bottom mouth feels like nothing was there…

Ew, not an appealing description…

MadHatterTeaDrunk

Guess you’ll have to have a slice of cheese with the tea. Ha-ha.

Haha, my kid loves plain pasta….yuck!

Mac and Cheese sans cheese… What a horrifying description :-(

LOL! Sums up my Monday clinic days perfectly.

Having purchased a couple of cakes of this stuff, you hit the nail on the head. Sweet, but without depth, viscosity, and much energy. Not bland, but on the same spectrum.
