Wow, I think this is some of the best quality puerh leaf I’ve had yet. I’m kicking myself for not having tried this before I made a big W2T order, because I may want to get a cake of this one. Maybe I’ll find somebody whose order I can piggyback on ;)

I used 7g in a 100mL gaiwan with boiling water. This tea would not quit. I got 16 GOOD steeps and then a couple faded ones at the end as well. It was very interesting, and rather consistent over a long session. Right from the get-go it was a thick, milky/creamy brew with sweet floral and honey notes. There was also something else I sort of struggled to describe – almost a savory note that, within about four steeps, started to morph into a slight bitterness which, far from taking away from the tea, added great complexity and depth. It wasn’t as bitter as like a Bulang sheng or anything like that, but it was enough of a bitterness to temper the sweetness, preventing the over-sweetness I sort of experienced with Poundcake. The strength and quality of the material really came through with this layered experience – sweet with bitter notes underneath and a very good honey huigan. The sweetness and body did not even begin to fade until around 14 steeps in.

Aside from the wonderful flavor, this tea’s quality was also apparent in the body feelings I got from drinking it. I could feel the liquid going down my throat, and after swallowing, got a bit of a throat constricting feel, like it was remaining there in some way. I could also quite clearly feel it settle in my stomach, not like making me feel ill or anything, but it kind of plopped down with that heaviness it possessed. About halfway through the session, I started feeling a relaxing qi, beginning in the belly and spreading throughout my torso.

I think I agree with the description the site, noting this tea’s high value:quality ratio. I wish I had tried it before I ordered a bunch of 2016 teas and stuff, because I would’ve gotten a cake of it on that order. For me it’s “If You’re Tasting This It’s 2 Late…” Sorry ;)

Fun physiology fact: did you know your gut has as many neurons as your central nervous system? I think the gut-brain gets high on good puer.

Matu

That is interesting! I’ve read/heard that you can “taste” with your stomach, but never heard that fact about neurons before.

tanluwils

I had a similar experience with this tea, as well. Serious value buy.

Matu

I agree. I bought two cakes!

4g, 75ml, 200F
Rinse x 2.
Wet leaf – tobacco, sweet ripe fruit, plum, apricot, straw.
First steep seemed a bit flat but I think it was too hot?
Lingering fluffy sweetness. Sweet, pepper, floral, minerals (reminds me of some oolongs in a way).
Many steeps over a couple days and then cold-brewed spent leaves in fridge overnight as I often do. Thank you for sharing mrmopar!

If you still have some of this one I recommend slurping the first few steeps. Now that you know it is subtle in the front you should be able to enjoy a bit more next time. :)

caile

That is so interesting and helpful JC. Does slurping sort of cool the tea in the mouth? I always find that if tea is too hot it is hard to taste and that’s what I thought it might be in this case. I don’t have anymore of this one but its on my order wishlist for at least another sample. I will use the slurping technique though for other teas and see if it helps.

JC

Is more like aerates the tea in your mouth. Also if it is too hot let it rest a bit more or even try to do ‘high pours’ to cool the liquor from the Gaiwan to the pitcher and from the pitcher to the cup. I don’t think it is a must, but slurping does help with more subtle teas. :)

caile

Thanks so much! I often pour directly from gaiwan to cup so I do have to let it rest but sometimes sip too soon. :)
I’m looking forward to trying slurping though and perhaps being able to taste more of the subtle teas/notes.

JC

It helps. I don’t do it all the times, but now I find myself doing for some teas that I just like slurping :P Is story to tell people, basically explaining ’I’m not being rude or lacking manners. I’m enjoying this the best way possible *slurrrrrp*’.

caile

Haha! I’ll have to find my favorite slurrrp teas too! I think I’ll practice on my own though before I try it with others although the explanation you give is great! ;))

I tried this tea several times and I noticed some sourness in the early steeps. Is it only me?

Big thanks to kieblera5 for sending a sample my way!

I drank this this past weekend and had two gongfu sessions, one on each day, using a ceramic gaiwan. This review is based off of the second session.

I need to stop procrastinating with obtaining a small scale (I’ve a couple saved on my Amazon wishlist for months…), then I’d really know how many grams I’d actually be using rather than relying on guestimation – especially when pu’erh cake is involved. The leaf of the first session was practically in loose leaf form, much easier to gauge. I had thought the remainder of the sample – an alarmingly large chunk in hindsight – would have been equal.

But I, sheng-newb. By the middle of the session the leaf went up to the rim of the bowl, in comparison to 2/3 the day before. I had to take three three-hour long breaks throughout that Sunday. Went from 9:40AM to 4:10PM. Couldn’t continue the session the next day – I had work, and no way the leaves would kept until the next weekend.

The number of infusions went up to 20. I won’t list all of them. Started with 5 seconds and ended with 10 minutes. 2 flash steepings beforehand.

The dry leaf smells peppery and sugar-sweet. I haven’t yet thrown away the packet – still smells like that. Letting the leaf sit in a heated bowl brings out a fruity and honey-like aroma. The notes of wet leaf aroma evolve, starting off with honey, then turning into white grapes, and then into apricots. Fresh and delicious. Best in the beginning, after the first couple infusions.

The liquor is a soft yellow and full-bodied. Infusions 1 through 5 were bitter with green peppers, with the bitterness gradually subsiding after each infusion.

Break 1. Second round begins with a bittersweetness and an apricot aftertaste. Infusion 7 was great! Wonderful mouthful. Silky. Here is the fruit. After infusion 8 I wrote: BLAST. This tea not only brings out the energy in me – it is energy. That mouthfeel is even stronger. By infusion 12 I can’t tell if I’m tea-tipsy or overly caffeinated. My heart rate doesn’t increase that much and my temperature is about the same. Oh well, I have brown sugar topped on my apricots now. Wow yes. Yes. Yes. Amazing.

I don’t remember brown sugar. It’s what I wrote in my journal but at this point the bird-watcher in me got distracted from the tasting. I had to inwardly wax poetic about the Cedar Waxwings having a feeding frenzy in the cedar tree across the street.

Second break. Too distracted by the waxwings (bluebirds joined them!!!). Then I went exercising. Normally I am a tired in an exhausted way after exercising. I even exerted myself more than usual hoping to rid of the excess energy. I sweated more than usual. I couldn’t tell if this was because I upped the workout intensity or because of the pu or because. I could’ve kept going (I’m sure more push-ups would have done the trick) but I had chores back home.

Infusions 13 through 16. Becoming even sweeter. At its fruitiest. Very apricot. I wrote “wiped” below “apricot apparent.” I don’t have a clue what that means. Though it definitely doesn’t refer to me at that time.

Break number 3. Infusions 17-19. The sweetness lightens and eventually balances with a vegetal flavor. 20: The End.

Epilogue: I did not drink it all. I’d say I fed half of each infusion to my tea pet piggy. Wasteful! – if you might think. But Georgie Pie gurgled with love every time I poured.

Also, was it work-related stress or the pu that gave me grief about not falling asleep until 1AM? Still, I had great day the next day!

The first, say, 20 times I drank this tea were great, and if I’d rated it back then, it would have been a solid 90, perhaps even higher. But having reached the centre of the beeng, with all the pretty leaves from the outside used up, I feel like the core is too tight and there’s a lot of broken leaf. The taste is not as good as I remember it from earlier steepings. It’s still alright, just a little flat, less interesting and the bitterness is more pronounced without adding depth.

Loved their “Old Arbor” so I thought I would love this one 2, but I won’t be trying this one again. Super sweet with an almost chemical taste.

This was yesterday’s tea, and I suck at doing reviews from memory. I do remember it having a really nice balance of sweet, bitter, and fruity, with some definite apricot notes, and some complexity of flavour. It didn’t change too much as I went through the steepings, just got a bit lighter and more mineral near the end.

I wish there were a way to try all these 2015 W2T samples head-to-head without drowning myself in tea, lol. I don’t think my palate is really good enough to detect any subtleties yet. I’m also being spoiled by the fact that W2T only sells good puer, so I’m probably completely taking for granted the fact that all these young shengs are perfectly drinkable right away.

This is one sweet tea. I get a variety of notes. There is an apricoty feeling to this sheng. Notes of stonefruits too. I broke in my new 50ml gaiwan for this tea so I was able to put it through a lot of steeps. After fourteen steeps I am feeling the effects of this tea. Normally with my larger gaiwans I would stop at eight steeps because I have to watch my caffeine levels. It’s very nice to have such a small gaiwan finally. My other gaiwans were at least 100ml and that is just too big to give a tea 14 steeps in one session. This is a tea I would definitely consider buying more of. I only wish it were a 357g cake instead of a 200g cake. This is one of the best shengs I have ever had.

I steeped this 14 times in a 50ml gaiwan with 3.7g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, 2 min, 2.5 min and 3 min.

May I ask where you purchased your gaiwan? I’ve been looking for a small one for a while.

teatortoise

Fourteen!

mrmopar

Its a humdinger.

Dr Jim

I can’t stand it any more! I just opened mine for a session.

AllanK

I’m sure you will like it.

Dr Jim

I do, though not as much as you do. Glad I bought it though.

Ubacat

This sounds like one I’d really like to try. I hope it’s in the monthly club package.

Brewing this up tonight.
I got this out a few hours ago and did a rinse and let it sit to open up.
Brewing was about 9 grams in the easy Gaiwan. I got some nice chunks with good leaf from this cake.
I did 3 quick brews into my big cup. This one is soft but really nice. The flavor notes are across the spectrum. Early notes in the sip are buttery, some bitterness and the sweet comes early without searching for it. The aftertaste will linger a while on this one. The brew was a light golden that didn’t indicate this level of notes. Most younger teas don’t exhibit the broad spectrum of this one. The later aftertaste is reminiscent of some LBZ I have had. wish I had a tong of this…….

Haveteawilltravel

Isn’t it so intriguing…

teatortoise

It sounds very intriguing.

Cwyn

A tong!

eyitsrichard

I get super hungry when I drink this tea. Anyone else get that?

teatortoise

With most puerhs I experience that effect.

boychik

Me too. i eat whatever is around. Non stop. not only with this tea, with sheng in general. My theory is its working my metabolism cause i dont gain weight.

teatortoise

It’s supposed to improve/increase digestion. I drink puerh sometimes for my indigestion and acid reflux.

mrmopar

@teatortoise I love shou when the re flux gets acting up for sure.

Grill

Sheng gives me the munchies big time especially younger ones

mrmopar

I agree with all the above. Munchies, interesting and metabolism.

Cwyn

TeaDB recommends Cheetos.

teatortoise

Even a strong high afterward.

JC

Shous are definitely your friend when the stomach is feeling weird. Young Sheng does help me if I eat greasy food, I feel like it subsets fat the or aids my tummy digest it.

I’ve yet to try this one, but if mrmopar recommends I’m looking forward to it :D
