Advent from Dustin Day 23
I was so excited to open this! I was even more excited when I looked up the ingredients. I’ve never had sandalwood in tea before. The combination of sandalwood and papaya sounds so intriguing, plus the Monty Python name makes it that much better.
Brewed, this actually smells like sandalwood! The papaya is really just reading as vaguely tropical. But, the combination of earthy sandalwood and tropical fruits is really interesting, and quite nice.
I’ve never tasted sandalwood before, but I think I’m tasting it? There’s a mildly earthy and slightly resinous flavor that definitely seems like it’s sandalwood.
I actually just watched a Taste of History video that included sandalwood as an ingredient in a Renaissance gingerbread recipe…I’m even more curious to try it now.

I had one tea with sandlewood before (and a ton of other herby things thrown in) and to me the whole concoction smelled like men’s cologne, hahaha! I think it was a Vahdam tea?

Dustin

It was the Monty Python and Sandalwood combo that sold me on it! I wonder where you find sandalwood as a cooking ingredient! Internet search to follow!

Martin Bednář

I like sandalwood scent, but in tea?! A bit weird, to be honest!

Lexie Aleah

Sandalwood in a tea sounds like something I’d love to try :)

Not to take away from this tea, but Chroma Tea’s Azure is another that features sandalwood.

amandastory516

derk- Chroma has been on my radar for awhile, and I didn’t realize they had a sandalwood blend. I’ll definitely have to place an order! Have you tried it?

derk

I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve been waiting for the dead of winter, like a few week’s worth of cold winter rains to try it out. The only tea of theirs I can speak for is Aquamarine, which was fascinating to me.

Dustin

Oooooo, Azure has vetiver in it! I’ve never had a tea with vetiver!
Also, I found where to buy sandalwood powder and chips.

Picked this up in a fancy grocery store in Dublin. I was looking for local tea companies. I had been to Dublin six years ago and had found several tea shops that sold loose leaf teas, but they all seem to have closed and I was on the search for what the current tea offerings were. This being an Irish company seemed to be a good alternative.

The first thing that caught my attention with this tea was the name: Life of Brian! I can appreciate a good sense of humor, even in tea. Second thing was the ingredients. Sandalwood?! Sandalwood with papaya? I don’t think I’ve ever had a tea with sandalwood in it! I’m a sucker for unique ingredients in tea. Sold.
Unfortunately my initial enthusiasm was muted when I steeped a cup. It’s a light fruity green tea. I get the papaya. It’s not super strong or juicy, but it’s there. I can’t for the life of me (or Brian) pick out the sandalwood! Maybe it’s working behind the scenes and supporting the flavor of the papaya, but it would be quite subtle if it was. I might try this again cold steeped, but if there is no magic in that cup, then I’m done with it. It was a nice dream.

I had a Gurman’s Tea from Dublin that had sandalwood in it! Such an unusual ingredient.

Always look on the bright side of life~

I was in a Gurman’s on that trip! Wish I had known they had a tea with sandalwood too! Do you recall how well you liked it?
I need to rewatch Life of Brian. It’s been too long!
