Cacao Pu-erh is a gateway tea for those that enjoy the beneficial properties of Pu-erh without having to acquire the earthiness of it. Infused with cacao nibs that when brewed releases sweet notes of hazelnut with rich and dark notes of chocolate.
Pu-erh is a black tea from the Yunnan province in China. Named after the city Pu-erh in the southern region, where most of it’s tea production occurs. Unlike other teas, Pu-erh undergoes a unique fermentation and aging process. Famed for it’s medicinal properties that can aid digestion, boost metabolism, lower cholesterol, and dispel toxins.

Mmm… cocoa and puerh should definitely be a hit with me. It was pretty good. Not my favorite puerh base and not my favorite cocoa effect…. three solid steeps. I was surprised the third steep wasn’t very rich though… it was a long steep.
Steep #1 // 1 1/2 teaspoons for a mug // 20 minutes after boiling // 2-3 minute steep
Steep #2 // 10 minutes after boiling // 3-4 min
Steep #3 // just boiled // 15 minute steep
I got this 4 oz bag from an eccentric tea shop owner in San Francisco in March. We got to learn about and sample all sorts of teas, and this was our favorite. I’ve learned since then that puerh is too caffeinated for me, so though I find this delicious, even the resteep makes me feel bad. The flavor is quite smooth, and it tastes like you’re drinking high quality hot chocolate. I always add plenty of milk and sugar, though when we tried it in the shop, it was still super good plain. It’s nice hot and even better cold. The only ingredients are puerh and cocoa nibs, but that’s all it needs!
I love choco-puerh combinations, and the shopping experience sounds like a hoot!
Vital leaf is an awesome place to visit, I try to stop by every time I’m in San Fran :)

I found myself wanting more of everything: more deep, rich, chocolate… more earthiness… but the description for this tea refers to it as a “gateway” pu-erh, which seems right!

Heya, tea-sipper, reading this note got me interested again in chocolate puerhs. So I went back and checked your review of Lupicia’s chocolate-strawberry puerh, which we rate the same. You praised the strawberry in it, saying the chocolate was a minor note. I am wondering how Vital Tea Leaf’s Cacao Pu-erh compares in its chocolatey-ness to that in Lupicia’s. What say you? :-)
It has been a WHILE since I have steeped up the Lupicia. But their strawberry chocolate puerh is probably one of my favorite flavored puerhs, as far as I remember. I liked that the strawberry was more present than the chocolate, since strawberry is one of the tougher tea flavors to do right. I’d say the Lupicia is worth a try.
