From Verdant Tea

The body is perfectly smooth, silky and creamy, while the aftertaste lingers in the back of the throat with a sweetness that only an early spring tea could achieve. The dominant flavor is that of oat cereal and vanilla soy milk. The green qualities of the tea come through not as an assertive grassiness, but more as the sweetness of fine Belgian Endive, or hearts of Romaine. In later steepings, there is the taste of green beans baked crisp and caramelized, along with fresh, fragrant notes of sugarcane.

just cold brewed this because iced teas happen to be far more soothing than hot teas for the swelling after having my wisdom teeth removed. so delicious, so refreshing! the flavors aren’t very different from the hot brew except that it’s far more refreshing obviously. it tastes like i’m drinking the essence of sugar snap peas. has a wonderfully light sugary sweetness, and the buttery quality becomes more of a light, astringent olive oil flavor. this is so yummy

I received the 5 for 5 from the extremely generous JustJames, and I have finally decided that it was time to try it, seeing that it is the weekend and I have the time to treat this tea properly, and really enjoy it.

On opening the bag a fresh aroma wafted towards me, not unlike nori.

The brewed flavour of this tea is oh so smooth, creamy, fresh, lightly vegetal. Oh JustJames, I am now so sorry I waited this long to try it, and will be so disappointed when I finish my packet. Thank you so much for sending this my way!

I got some of this the other day and it smelled delicious! I’m most intrigued to try it.

So I’m getting dangerously close to tea blahs because I’m thinking about how I have so much in my cupboard and a lot of it is just stuff I bought on impulse, or bought too much of because I didn’t know I could get less, and it’s draggin me down.

It’s dragging me down, man.

So instead of worrying about sipdowns, or trying teas I haven’t had before to see if I want to throw them in my freebie pile, I’m drinking this. And enjoying it. That’s a good fix. And I’ve got some iced Paris in the fridge. And when I do my tea meet-up in a few weeks I’ll hopefully be able to get rid of some of the stuff I’m not so into but others might like! :O

I did a review for this tea on my blog but here is a quick overview for this tea.

Steep 1: Soy bean, edamame, savory, sweet, beany, light

Steep 2: Citrus, lima bean, brisk, clean . More steamed green than buttered sauteed green and has a thick mouth feel. Slight citrus, fresh green bean crisp. Light nutty note. Sweet greens actually. Yes sweet green after taste.

Steep 3: Still citrus and crisp steamed creamy bean with thick mouth feel. It has a kind of a nutty creaminess. Cooled is a little more savory. Even cooler, more citrus green dry aftertaste. Still sweet green flavor.

Steep 4: Crisper, less citrus. A little more savory now. More sauteed instead of steamed veggie, but still crisp and fresh. I can’t believe there is not butter in this. Do it taste salt??? Still sweet after taste, but with some savory flavor. Man I want some nachos or a steak now to go with this tea. The tea drunk is setting in. Very sweet grass after taste. Must be that spring picking flavor to it.

Steep 5: Very savory sated veggies in butter. Ok becoming very tea drunk. Must eat something. Sorry pallet. This is one of my favorite steeps so far. Very savory green bean, but also sweet after taste. It kinda is giving me the whole spectrum of this tea; minus the citrus.

Steep 6: Much more savory. Very thick, creamy and buttery. Ok this is my favorite steeping. Still that sweet aftertaste, but much more light. Hmmmmm buttered greens.

Steep 7: Lighter, but still savory green. I wonder if my wasabi almonds is making it taste more savory. Hmmmm salted veggies. I also now have a strong urge to buy wasabi peas and brew them with my green tea. So much tea drunk

Ok I think I am done for now. I could get more steeps out of it, but I am too full and tea drunk to continue.

From what I can gather the early steepings are crisper, nuttier, and have a citrus quality to them. Then the flavor starts to move away from the bright crisp qualities to savory, buttery, sauteed flavor. Each steeping though maintained a sweet grass after taste.

This was one of the samples I received with the 5 for $5 promotion. I’m not rating it yet because I’m still working on telling greens apart, but I have finally made it to a point where I’m making them without any additives. This has more of a sour and even bitter bite than I enjoy, so it will not be on my list of things to re-order.

Green tea isn’t really my thing, but this month’s TOTM classic club selections were all green tea and I got twice the amount as normal because I was signed up for the bundle club also so… yeah, may as well try these. I mean, I was going to anyway, but this way I have some I can put into the TTB B too. Anyway.

This seriously tastes like vegetables. I’m not quite sure it tastes like specifically one vegetable, although it might because I’m not good at identifying tastes so much beyond the obvious and black teas rarely taste like vegetables. If I were to guess, I think the combination of soy beans and green beans might be accurate but that’s not quite what I’m looking for. I know I’ve eaten whatever this tastes like before, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I did add some sweetener to this, and brewed it Western Style. Not enough sugar to make it taste sweet, but enough to cut the natural bitterness.

This is really delicious green tea. Spring is yummy. I did get notes that I have been detecting in the Laoshan Green teas that I have been trying, which are lima beans and butter. But this one was lighter, cleaner, and it had notes of grains. I did taste the oat that it suggests on the Verdant website.
I used a Kyusu and steeped this six times following the instructions on the Verdant website and loved them all, however, I never detected any sweet notes of sugarcane or lychee as they had tasted. I have never tasted any sweetness in any of the Laoshan Greens I have tried so far. It might be because I like to drink green teas with my lunch but I try to taste the tea before taking a bite of my lunch.
They are delicious though, especially with a savory meal!!

Thank u to Terri Harplady for this sample!!

It’s been a long time since I’ve had this tea, mainly because I’ve been on a bit if a black tea kick. This was sent as a sample in one of my last Verdant orders. I’m always thankful to get to try the newest harvests! I know I waited a couple months to actually open it, but it smells and tastes very fresh. The first steep is so pale I was wondering if I somehow hadn’t heated the water enough, but the taste is there, and it is lovely! So nice to have this in my stash again. Also, I’m using my new little glass steeper from Verdant and I LOVE it! I’m using it for everything.

i am very new to green tea so my rating will be rather metaphorical and adjectival!

this tea is both simple and complicated concurrently. before i sip it smells like the ocean, reminding me vaguely of nori from when i make sushi in my kitchen. in my mouth it has light curls of smoke that add layers but don’t overpower. sliding to the back of the tongue caffeine asserts itself, the potential for bitterness is there, but doesn’t develop.

the most surprising element appears at this point…. after i have swallowed sweetness comes up from under my tongue. verdant tea…. how did you manage this?

this tea is outstanding. i added nothing to it and will continue to refrain to (high praise from me). i should also say as someone who has worked in customer service for years that the hand written signed notes thanking me and wishing me well truly meant to world to me. classy company, quality product.

Second to last in the Verdant $5 sampler (possibly the best $5 I’ve ever spent, by the way).

Dry leaves—Thin curled strands of dark green. Wonderful multi-layered aroma, quite creamy, reminds me of a matcha latte, strong green-vegetal notes, and a distinct touch of cocoa powder.

Pale yellow-green liquor. Rich mouthfeel, on the creamy side. The taste, while not being bold or overpowering, is fairly robust. Quite a roasty flavor, almost malty, good green-tea-grassy-vegetal flavors up front, a bit of bitterness and spice, hints of something vaguely sulfur(?) at the end. Steeping brings out the bitterness quite easily, so stick to short steep times at first.
