From Verdant Tea

A unique Earl Grey made with Tieguanyin and laced with saffron and frankincense. . . .
Traditional Earl Grey is a classic, great for every season, but we have always thought that bergamot is such a bright flavor. What if the brightness of Bergamot could be balanced and tempered by darker woodier notes for a tea that could be both comforting and uplifting for the winter months? This was our goal in blending the Earl of Anxi.

We start not with a black tea, but with our famous Hand-Picked Tieguanyin to give the bergamot a cleaner base to integrate with, and reinforce the floral citrus notes. We draw out the citrus sweetness with a uniquely creamy and rich orange peel, and crystallize the florals into a prominent position with jasmine blossoms.

To create the darker more comforting brew we are looking for, we add a creamy, savory base with generous use of Spanish saffron threads. We deepen the sweetness with the caramel fruit notes of goji berries, and to bring it all together we employ the resinous woody notes of pure wild-crafted frankincense sap. This acts as an intriguing base that unifies all the flavor elements and evokes a mountain temple with incense wafting through the air.

Taken together, these ingredients yield a tea that is sweet and creamy, cleansing, and at the same time warming and vaguely intimate because of the saffron and frankincense. Brew up a big pot as a cold-weather companion that evokes the warmth of summer.

Ingredients: Summer Harvest Tieguanyin, Organic Orange Peel, Organic Jasmine, Wildcrafted Frankincense Resin, Organic Goji Berry, Organic Saffron

Dear Earl of Anxi,

I don’t know how to begin to thank you for helping me through a harrowing evening of very last minute tax preparation. Your multiple lovely steepings were the only bright spot in the process. You lack any astringency and bring such lovely citrusy and bergamot flavors. You also have the faintest peppery finish to keep me on my toes. You are very aptly named, as you are the Earl I should turn to in times of Anxi(ety) to calm me down and bring me peace. You will always have a place in my cupboard!

Mmm dry this smells of orange, and jasmine!!! Why oh why did I only get a sample of this?! The tieguanyin tastes so good as always. But with the orange, jasmine, saffron, and Frankincense, it has gone to a whole new level of deliciousness :) this tea is so refreshing, and calming yet energizing all at the same time. I could for sure drink this everyday! The orange makes it feel so light, the jasmine so calming mmmm I love how all these flavours swirl around in my mouth. I need to have more of this, I sure hope verdant has it again soon!

As soon as I saw the description of this tea, I had to have it. Earl Grey and oolong, who could resist.

Upon opening the package, there is a strong bergamot and citrous scent. The dry tea itself is beautiful. There are bright coloured gogi berries, mixed with the dark green oolong tea and other ingredients.

While brewing, the tea smelled mostly of green oolong. To me the taste is strong oolong. There is a subtle hint of bergamot and I can taste the perfume of the frankincense. I was a bit disappointed, I thought the bergamot would taste stronger. But I think this might be due to making only one cup of this tea. I think becuase there are several ingredients in this tea, that you are going to get different things in each scoop. I think I just need to make a pot and use more tea, to get more of the ingredients.

Obverall I am very satisfied and happy with this tea. Looking forward to many more cups.

So far this will be my longest log, and you will read why!

This is the first of many teas from the extremely creative team at Verdant Tea. I’ve been more than anxious and excited to try this particular unique blend of interesting, exotic ingredients. This has been my first ever Frankincense experience!

First sip is an instant explosion of a quality oolong tea. By far the smoothest and cleanest I’ve yet tasted. There is a definitive taste of citrus, mainly orange, and jasmine with a pleasant hint of an oily, woodsy note that I can only assume is the Frankincense! Right now I would be perfectly content with drinking this tea for the rest of my days but, alas, I have another few hundred or so to go! This tea was so good, I ended up purchasing 300g and it is also my first 100/100!

Bonnie

I hope you steeped several times since the frankincense opens up with each steep. I cold brew the leftover leaves in water in the frig. David and I were talking about incense when I was creating my blog teaandincense.com and the next thing I know he had created this tea.

Not this time Bonnie, but I will definitely take your advice to heart!

So after steeping them once in hot water, I decided to cold brew this one for the second infusion. One thing’s certain — it looks very pretty swirling around in the jar. I’m still not terribly impressed by this one, but I’m finding that if I drink it quickly, without stopping to think about every sip, then it’s pretty inoffensive. The goji berries with the fruitiness of the tieguanyin is pretty nice, and the pepperiness makes it a little more interesting. But I’m not blown away by it, either. I just don’t think this one’s for me. Probably won’t drink again.

I came to note a sipdown on this one, and it appears I have never written a note on this! I doublechecked since I was sure I have written one before, but to no avail. I don’t think I need to say much about it, as it has a TON of notes already. So I will just say that this doesn’t taste like an Earl Grey; to me it is much more of a Jasmine Oolong, with some orange and bergamot swimming around in the background. I like it Mucho!!

I went into this expecting an Earl Grey sort of flavor profile, even with the Tieguanyin base, but it doesn’t taste much like Earl Grey at all. You can smell the hint of citrus in the loose leaves of the tea, but it is completely overpowered by everything else after you brew it. The scent of this tea in my cup is very floral, it doesn’t seem like just jasmine but perhaps the frankincense is altering my impression. The taste is a floral oolong, with a heavier almost musty background that I’m guessing is the frankincense. I’m not getting any goji berry or the citrus/bergamot that I was expecting, though in general the tea is a very nice blend. Everything feels balanced (maybe a bit floral heavy) and it tastes like quality tea, just not what I was expecting. The flavors are interesting but probably not something I will reach for often – luckily I just got a sample and don’t have much left anyway!

Beautiful oolong blend. My favorite way to have oolong so far! The citrus and jasmine compliment the tea very well. No need for honey or sugar either, just nice and light and soothing.

Love, love, LOVE this tea! I’m an Earl Grey fan, and it tastes nothing like earl grey. I’ve had 2 steepings, and jasmine was the only flavor I could identify for sure (have no idea what frankincense smells/tastes like). It has a wonderful aftertaste. So glad I didn’t just get the sample size! I think this might be my new favorite.

I had this tea a day or so ago and something about it, I still can’t put my finger on it, just struck me really wrong. Maybe a spice I couldn’t place? Maybe the base? Maybe the combination of everything? I don’t know but I was really looking forward to this one and I just wasn’t enjoying it. I am glad it is a favorite of quite a few out there, but not my cup of tea.

Anlina

My last cup had a big frankincense pearl that was really punchy and bold tasting.
