From Verdant Tea

Laoshan Green Tea is the epitome of humble beauty, a tea cultivated on the slopes of a Taoist holy mountain, naturally shaded by ocean mist, and sweet and creamy like a comforting dessert, yet unknown outside Shandong province where it grows. As Laoshan Green grows into its role in the west as one of the top rated, most highly praised green teas available, we thought it was time to return to its humble roots with a Laoshan Genmaicha.

This Genmaicha is warm, comforting and savory, a perfect balance of toasted rice and creamy green tea. We take a mixture of fragrant jasmine sticky rice for its sweet, thick milky quality and blend it with our own locally harvested Minnesota wild rice, picked on canoes on our northern lakes, and carefully toasted in tiny batches in-house to yield the perfect puffed rice for Genmaicha. The wild rice adds a deep nutty and vaguely floral sweetness that perfectly compliments the green-bean taste of our fresh Laoshan Green.

This tea is a union of Shandong and Minnesota’s finest crops, a way of connecting the artistry and environmental stewardship of our tea growing friends with that of our wild rice farmers. Super forgiving, this tea can be brewed up in a pot, a gaiwan, or a giant mug to keep your hands warm in the colder months. We hope you have as much fun trying this revolutionary new take on the tradition of Genmaicha as we did blending it.

Yum, genmaicha. I’m very interested in trying this one so I can see how it compares to my beloved Minnesota Blend, since it’s the same thing but without the vanilla and flower petals. I love that they use two types of toasted rice, it adds a lot of visual interest. The tea itself is one of the Laoshan Greens, and the leaves are dark evergreen, very thin, and curled. It smells toasty and creamy and absolutely lovely. I went for a 2 minute steep just because. :D

Mm, the brewed aroma is luscious… Toasting, comforting rice mixed with sweet and creamy vegetal green tea. Oh yum. The toasted rice is very toasted, so the flavor is deep and rich and amazing. And the green tea is that lovely sweet and creamy Laoshan Green with its gentle vegetal flavor. This is delish, and will absolutely be an acceptable substitute for my Minnesota Blend once it’s gone (aww).

Much less rice than I usually see in Genmaichas. But it’s good this way. I like it. I like the base tea quite well, so the lower rice content is actually quite nice.

Ok so I know I just said I’m staying away from greens for the time being, but I wanted to know what the Laoshan Green would taste like hot, and since this is made with the Laoshan Green I decided to give it try. This mostly savory, but there’s a hint of sweetness there, and I keep thinking for a second that I had sweetened this, and then remembering I didn’t. There’s the green beans, smooth an buttery in a way I didn’t notice in the cold brew, and also some roasty nutty, mise with the toasty notes. This is pretty good, and once I get out of my green tea funk I can see myself ordering this.

For someone who doesn’t really drink green tea, I don’t quite understand why I love genmaicha so much….
This is just yummy. Roasted nuts, a little like popcorn, it’s not too grassy, it’s not too veggie ish, Just a really nice light roasty, toasty well balanced awesome cup of tea.
This is one of my favorite genmaichas.

I’m the same way Dexter – I don’t love green tea but I do love genmaicha. Of course I love Laoshan Black Chocolate Genmaicha the MOST – but I love regular genmaicha too.

I really enjoyed this – whereas many of the other gemaichas I have tried tasted like kettle corn a bit, this was a lot more subtle and in a good way. I could clearly taste the tea which was delicious as it was, and very smooth which I love. Then the toasted rice just added in a bit of nuttiness and foodiness to make it just right. Very good, but not too heavy for a warm summer night either.

This is the 3rd Genmaicha I’ve ever had. (Well 3rd brand that is.) the 1st was Fusion Teas, and a interesting flavor but 1 I was undecided about keeping around. The second was a unknown nasty one that still makes me shudder.

This, like the other Verdant tea that I’ve tried so far (Eight Treasures. Tried it just a few days ago.) Is excellent. Since I’ve been flirting with the idea of just keeping samples (Since I love variety but also must be reasonable about how much I spend.) I don’t think I would want a bunch of this at a time. But like with Eight Treasures I keep licking my chops. Grins

Weird. I love Laoshan green and I love genmaicha. Why doesn’t this one seem as special as the others? Don’t get me wrong, it’s delicious in all the ways you’d expect, I guess this is a case where I’d rather just not combine these two loves. Plain Laoshan green is the way to go for me.
