From Verdant Tea

The aroma of this intensely rich Yunnan black is immediately reminiscent of one of our favorite chocolate’s of all time: the Rogue Chocolatier Hispaniola bar, made with a tangy and nuanced cacao from the Dominican Republic. Imagine a fine dark chocolate melted down and infused with hibiscus. That is the aroma of this tea. It is so rich and fruity it even reminds us of a fine, light roasted coffee.

The flavor is so full bodied it evokes the wafting smoke from the smoldering cedar wood embers of a long-extinguished fire. This mouthfeel is followed up by an engaging tart and warming quality. Clove and orange peel assert themselves with the woody cedar flavor. Later steepings yield to an unexpected savory flavor like thick-cut kettle chips and cayenne pepper. The potato flavor grows into a burdock root aftertaste.

Note: This tea is named after Lady Zhu Rong, the dagger wielding warrior queen of Yunnan who was descended from the god of Fire. The elegance and power of this tea compelled us to evoke her Kingdom of Dian, the “barbarian” south before it was conquered by China and called Yunnan.

Another tea from MissB, another winner to add to my shopping list! This tea was so sweet and savory I thought I must have added too much sweetener, but after a second steep I realized the tea is just that good! Very smooth and full of subtle flavor, reminds me quite a lot of Laoshan Black…

This tea comes from a swap with Nicole done in order to help me to explore more yunnans. Thanks Nicole this one is really fantastic and clearly my favourite yunnan.

The texture is so mellow and sweet with a good amount of maltiness ! I get cocoa notes and I like this.
A very great tea, really.

Zhu Rong Yunnan Black is a different tea, a stronger flavor in my opinion but one you could drink for breakfast.

This evening I broke into the 2013 spring harvest. I needed something soothing and dependable to cure the doldrums. Though each harvest yields a slightly different flavor profile, somehow they all retain enough common elements to strike the same chord in my heart. To me, this tea is always beautiful. It’s gentle, forgiving, uplifting, and kind. It knows exactly what I need and it brings to me a state of calm and quiet joyfulness.

Tea soulmate.

Right now, I don’t need anything else in the world…

And it inspired me to make it my first cup of the morning. Dang! I love this tea. I need to look, but I’m pretty sure I rate it at 100 too.

Every time I drink this tea, something keeps me from writing a note about it. The phone rings, I’m late for a meeting, I enjoy the tea so much that I simply forget to log it. It’s always something. Well, I’m going to make time today because THIS IS MY 500TH NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The dry leaf aroma is warm. Yes, warm. It smells inviting. The brewed tea aroma is a whole host of notes: woods, campfire, moss, bark. Cedar is the most prominent note. The flavor? Intoxicating. There’s a lovely spicy undertone that’s pronounced without being overtly spicy. It’s definitely not chai-like. It’s…unique, for lack of a better word. I love this tea to death. It is always delicious, comforting, and nuanced. Yunnan must be a magical fairytale land to produce such sweet nectar. Subsequent infusion for 3 minutes is just as enjoyable as the first cup. It’s hard to imagine growing tired of this tea. Who knew cedar wood could be so delicious?

I was glancing over the Verdant Tea website, but sadly this tea has been sold out for some time. I clicked on “Learn More” and found this beautiful passage: “How to Taste Tea. If you can put yourself in the right frame of mind, quiet the chatter of the everyday, and immerse yourself in the sensory experience of brewing and tasting a cup of tea, even a mediocre tea will be beautiful.” Wow. Isn’t that insightful? It’s so true and eloquently stated. I try to do this when I drink tea. I can’t properly reflect and blog unless I turn off the TV and block outside distractions. But I must say that this particular tea is far from mediocre. It is stellar, and I shall relish every last drop.

Oh my, this is good :) This is definitely part of the equation that made The Jolly Earl so delicious. I’m not able to place the right words for this just yet. I am getting the sweet potato and cinnamon. It is definitely not my normal thought on straight blacks “taste like hot iced tea” there is definitely more to this one.

Thank you Nicole I’ve wanted to try this ever since I had The Jolly Earl :)

Oooh a Yunnan red tea. I have seen this reviewed many times and knew it would be interesting. This one comes from Terri. Thanks for being awesome.

The dry leaf is gorgeous but scent wise didn’t give up much information. Add 205 F water for 45 S and that all changes. Baby is that a dark aroma. It is like dark chocolate and slightly overdone brownies. It is slightly malty and a little spicy.

The sip is honey and rich browned cocoa. Throw in some fruit and spice notes. Feels thick on the tongue. You can catch the roasting at various times through the sip. Very good!

I’ve gone through at least an ounce of this one without ever posting a tasting note, apparently. I sometimes confuse it with the yu lu yan cha simply because I bought them at the same time but now I should be able to remember the differences!

This one has large golden leaves that are fuzzy and remind me of thread, and very few (if any) broken leavesor crumbs. Steeped three minutes, I’ve got a rich amber liquor that smells faintly of cocoa. The taste is rich and dark without being bitter at all. It isn’t as sweet as other yunnans but has that depth and cocoa that I love. A lovely tea that I am glad to have another 2 ounces of!

followed Western brewing instructions from Verdant’s website, which says that you can steep 4 times. Smells somewhat of bitter chocolate. Pretty leaves. I don’t get all the flavors, very diluted after first steep. Sorry.
