From Verdant Tea

Yunnan Golden Buds begs to serve as the foundation of an incredible chai. It is already spicy, sweet and nuanced. For a decadent departure from the traditional Chai formulation, we branched out and tracked down some incredible organic Holy Basil to bring out the body. Instead of letting ginger lead, we blend in flowery galangal, sweeten the mix with fennel and cinnamon and give it a yunnan citrus kick with orange peel. This rich blend is great with or without a touch of milk and honey.

This is the last of a full one ounce sample that Jason sent me about 4 months ago. The Chai is very Gingery and got mixed reviews depending on how you feel about ginger really. This is my final cup (sigh).

I’m a fan of ginger. It makes me feel better when my stomach is upset (happens often). The taste of this Golden Chai is not sharp but sweet and mellow. Ginger can be bitter but this tea isn’t even after re-steeping several times.
I love how my body feels warmed from within like a soft glow when I drink this Chai.

I brewed my tea early which was comforting when I turned on my computer. I had slept in a bit, wrote a tea review then went to my email and read some sad but not unexpected news.

The Godmother to my grandchildren, and dearest family friend Terry Beck passed last night after her 5 month battle with cancer.

I’ve spoken of her before. Her 60 foster children, 5 adult children and 5 adopted. She leaves her Husband Fr. Andrew Beck and 2 adopted sons 4 and 8 still at home.
So Memory Eternal to my friend!

I made this tea and looked at pictures of Terry holding my naked Grandson Micah at his Baptism… all smiles. Then I looked out my window and the snowflakes were just beginning to float down.

For about an hour, a steady quiet snow fell.

When she became ill, Terry had a tea time once a week at her home in the Redwoods. Ladies (and a few men) from the neighborhood and the Church would come and make tea and visit. My daughter met with her for tea on the internet and they chatted and laughed.
She communicated to everyone her joy and gratitude for life.

Tea, life, gratitude. I can drink tea and practice gratitude in her memory. I’ll have to work on it since I can be a grumbler.

I’ve gone all over the place with this review. Some people might think this is not appropriate on a tea site. Maybe so. Just don’t hit like and carry on. I’m not offended if people don’t like me. Just be kind to others…that’s when I get upset!

For the end of this discontinued Chai, and the first snow…

…and Terry! http://youtu.be/p3iYnHx8P0s

Nik

It sounds like your Terry lived an amazing, amazing life. I’m sorry that it was cut short, and am sending peace and strength your way.

HyBr1d

I’m sorry to hear about your friend Bonnie :( And no, I don’t think the post was inappropriate at all! To be honest, my stomach is upset, so I’m going to brew up a little Laoshan chai, and see if that helps at all, and will do so in honor of your departed friend.

Zoltar

sorry to hear about your loss :( your post was not inappropriate for me steepster is more than just a tea site it’s a community if we can’t talk about that kind of stuff in our community then where can we ?

Tea, Life, Gratitude for who i have in my life and sometimes take for granted because we never know what tomorrow will be

Kashyap

Bonnie

Thank you everyone. 500 people attended her funeral yesterday in the redwoods at St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Ben Lomond, CA which is saying a lot for a humble woman who wore thrift store clothes and cared for others before herself.

Angrboda

My condolences for your loss.

I am going to miss this – I only have enough for one more cup!

Today instead of my usual milk and honey, I stirred in a generous tsp of sweetened condensed milk – I had lots left over from my bread pudding recipe last night, so in the tea it must go!

Such a great light and summery chai! I suppose it’s a good time to finish it off, but I will miss it dearly.

Bonnie

OHHHH Sounds Good!

Daisy Chubb

I knew you’d appreciate the deliciousness of that little addition Bonnie ;)

Nik

I really need to try sweetening my tea with condensed milk instead of honey or sugar. I have a feeling I’d love it.

Daisy Chubb

Definitely give it a try Nik! It’s a very nice treat

This tea was one of my teas of the month for May (at least I think it was for May). First off there is a WHOLE lot of ginger in this cup! I didn’t think their would be so fool that I am stuck my nose right in the bag and we’ll just say my sinus troubles might be over for the season. There is more to this tea like cinnamon, fennel, basil, etc, but sadly the ginger is all I am smelling at the moment.

The taste is heavy on the ginger too. It isn’t bad, but it isn’t what I expect from a chai either. I don’t say this very often about a tea from Verdant…but I am not in love with this one. I’ll give it another go tomorrow and see if I’m somehow missing everything else.

ScottTeaMan

This sounds like a really great Chai, with a Yunnan, and I like ginger too.

IllBeMother221B

The jury (me) is still out. Maybe I need to add milk and honey as they suggest on their website next time. It isn’t horrible, just not what I am used to with other Chai’s I’ve tried.

ScottTeaMan

The best Chai I’ve had so far is from Rishi.

IllBeMother221B

I’ll have to give them a shot. What’s the name of the Chai?

ScottTeaMan

I sampled mine in a swap, but I do plan on ordering more, by Fall for sure.

IllBeMother221B

I’ll keep that in mind. The chai with vanilla looks good to me too.

ScottTeaMan

Yeah, and the Rooibos Chai too.

TeaBrat

I like both the Chais from Rishi (the caffeine and the West Cape). Just for the record I thought the Laoshan Chai from Verdant was pukey but everyone else seems to love it – go figure

ScottTeaMan

@Amy, maybe you just didn’t like the mix with Yunnan?

TeaBrat

I haven’t tried the Yunnan Chai, I had the Laoshan Chai :P

ScottTeaMan

Ok…Um…..my bad. :))

Kashyap

If anyone wants to try the Ohio Thunder Chai let me know….when its gone it may be gone for good and its pretty yums

IllBeMother221B

I would, sounds great!

Kashyap

send me a message with an address and I will send you a taste…Ceylon Kenilworth OP, organic Assam Banathspathy FOP, organic green cardamom, cinnamon chips, whole clove, organic shreaded/dried ginger, decordicated cardamom, organic whole black peppercorns….the cup is warming, fruity, gently spicy and the large tea leaves make it very difficult to overextract allowing for the spices to have enough steep time to be expressed

IllBeMother221B

That is super awesome of you!

Bonnie

This was quite good with honey!

I’ve been reading through the Tea Hiatus thread and while I don’t feel the need to go on a complete hiatus, I do feel the need to drink down a lot of the samples we have. So while craving a chai this morning, I reached for this tea instead of one of my tried-and-true favorites. I mixed it with some vanilla almond milk for a latte, because that’s the best way to have chai, for me at least.

I am…unimpressed. Everything is undercut by the ginger and the fennel. It’s a decent enough cuppa, but I’m glad I don’t have much of this. But I like my chais strong on the cinnamon, so this likely wasn’t the blend for me to begin with. I found it very weak.

Lol, this one tastes more like mulled wine than a tea :) Kinda nice, but not something I’d drink regularly.
