From Ujinotsuyu

Kyoto has been holding the reputation as the birthplace of high quality of tea. The plant is flourishing especially in Uji, which is located on the south in Kyoto, for the reasons: “Rich nature and environment suited to the cultivation” and " Tradition rooted on this area ". Ujinotsuyuseicha Co. Ltd. is an Uji-based manufacture, having the aim at spreading our tradition through tea to all over the world.

Genmai Cha is an exotic Japanese recipe that combines popped rice and popcorn with tender and delicate green tea leaves. First used by farmers as a cost-saving measure, GenmaiCha remains to be one of the most popular tea in morden Japan. Genmai Cha has less caffeine and tastes less astringent. GenmaiCha brings together the refreshing lightness, sweetness and the distinctive taste of roasted rice. To prepare, Boil water, warm the tea port. Add one tablespoons of leaves (about 4g) to cup. Pour hot water. Steep a while then serve. Tea can be re-infused.

Comforting. Is a great substitute for my morning coffee. Roasty, light to med body. Not too sweet, earthy, slightly vegetal and smoky. Fairly clean aftertaste. A favourite!

Mmmm a very nice tasting and affordable genmaicha! I have been drinking this for years. Everyone tells me genmaicha is the Japanese “poor man’s tea” but who cares it tastes great and I love the roasted rice flavour!

Genmaicha is my favorite tea thanks to Collette and Liz introducing me to it 8 years ago. My stepmom brought me back a bag of it. Soothing!

I drank the last of my Genmaicha today and will have to buy some more. This tea reminds me so much of the first time I ate sushi with my dad in a little sushi place in bridgeland that had beautiful wood fired mugs that I am reminded of that time every time I drink it.

Fantastic smooth genmaicha, it also lasts a long time without getting too bitter…a good choice if you don’t want to drink all your tea right away.

I drink this daily… It has a nice robust flavor and is smooth.

Usually drink this in a stainless steel tea mug, and steep at least 2-3 times before changing the leaves.

Bought from T&T supermarket, you can get 400 g of this tea for under $10 CAD (if I’m remembering correctly!) This genmaicha is a bit more umami than the Genmaicha and Matcha Genmaicha that I’ve tried from DAVIDsTEA, but it’s really delicious when steeped for 3 minutes in 180ºF water. When following those steeping parameters, the roasted rice notes are definitely prominent, but are perfectly complemented by the rather vegetal green tea. For me, genmaichas are not typically a tea I’d bother shelling out for, as the roasted rice notes tend to mask any of the astringent or vegetal qualities that can come from cheap green tea.

I like to rinse my genmaicha in cold water before steeping it in semi-boiling water for 30 seconds.
