From thepuriTea

The small, blue-black tealeaves of our Earl Grey are brimming with the bold, citrusy, sweet aroma of pure bergamot (citrus fruit) essence. A classic breakfast blend or afternoon tea, its deep garnet brew has a bold, zesty flavor that’s great alone, with a dash of sugar or a drop of milk, or alongside pastries, scones and cream, or petits fours. Our Earl Grey is supported by the complex flavors of its malty, chocolaty, earthy Fujianese black tea base, making it a far more complex brew than most Earl Grey teas out there. Whether you’re a new tea drinker or an Earl Grey aficionado, this Earl Grey is an excellent choice.

Tea of the afternoon……

For some reason this one tastes really good today. I would not call it my favorite Earl Grey because I think it leans slightly too perfumy for me, but it is still good. Even though the price is pretty reasonable by the pound compared to my two other favorites, this is one type of tea where a splurge is worth it to me. Not sure this will make the rebuy list, but it does make an awesome iced tea.

Usual teapot method.

Oooooh, I’m curious, what are your other two favorites?

SimplyJenW

For true Earl Grey taste: Lupicia’s Earl Grey, and Steven Smith’s Lord Bergamot. I also love Earl Grey Supreme from Harney & Sons, but it is light on the bergamot, but has a fabulous tea base. I probably drink the Harney the most.

LiberTEAS

LOL you sound like me … Lupicia’s and Steven Smith’s were my two favorites before trying this one. Now that I’ve tried this and also Earl Grey Excelsior from Tealicious Tea, those are my two favorites, but, Lupicia’s and Steven Smith’s are still up there high on the list.

SimplyJenW

@LiberTEAS- See, I did the opposite. thepuriTea was first then Lupicia and then Steven Smith(in the order I tried them). For some reason, this one pales in comparison to the other two for me.

Cheryl

What specific factors cause one to bump up (or down) the other? (both of you, lol) I’m guessing it’s a personal taste thing, so trying to get a better clue as to what each of you prefer in an Earl Grey.

SimplyJenW

I like the bergamot to be bright ant not perfumy, so more orangey, maybe. I also like the tea base to be really good. For this one the bergamot seems a little perfumy. I am wondering how recently LiberTEAS purchased hers…… I wonder if SpecialTeas used to be the supplier for thepuriTea’s flavored teas a while back, and now it is someone else. (The reason I say this is I once had a sample from them that even said SpecialTeas Strawberry. Then there was a huge lull in stock for flavored teas right around that time.)

Cheryl

Thanks. And for you Jen, I’m assuming you lean more towards a strong black, like the Keemums you like or so? Smoky scares me (remember) lol But looked up Liber’s Tealicious one, and that is out of consideration based on price alone. Sounds good though! But my everyday one is only $6.60 for 250g, lol (Upton EGCV).

Dylan Oxford

I’m sorry, did you just say $6.60 for 250g, and it’s your favorite? You’re not missing a zero or something there?

SimplyJenW

Hmm. The ones I drink are not smokey, but they are much pricier than the EGCV from Upton. The base for the Lupicia is a Keemun, but a mild one, and I think the base for Steven Smith is an Assam blend. I say drink what you like!

Cheryl

The Assams I’ve tried have been too strong for me. Haven’t tried Keemun coz of smoky description, but will get around to it (some day, lol).
Dylan … yes … no missing zeros. But keep in mind, I haven’t tried all these other ones mentioned, and I add to it (honey, Coffeemate sweet cream, mmmm). Creamsicle’ish. I could…ummm, should… drink it with just the honey though.

K S

Cheryl you have me beat. My favorite is $6 for 100g. I think I will try the creamer idea once, just to see.

Cheryl

Dylan-Upton has 14 different Earls. Like the chocolate one too. And if one were to order samples, one might want to throw in a sample of Tropical Chai Spice too. Or throw those on a shopping list at least.

Cheryl

KS – Coffeemate’s “Natural Bliss” is good, but the (less natural) Italian Sweet Cream is a bit like sweetened condensed milk in taste (mmmm). Which is your favorite? (oh gosh, sorry Jen, I’m doing it again, lol)

Dinosara

I really do have to try the Lupicia and Steven Smith Earls sometime.

SimplyJenW

Don’t worry, Cheryl. I kind of like that Steepster is a place where we can also discuss tea rather than just reviewing it! You can hijack my tealog anytime!

Sample stashbusting! The first time I had this tea I was not really impressed with it, which was disappointing because a lot of people really like it. I thought it was decently tasty but not enough of an Earl Grey to me… i.e., not enough bergamot. What is also interesting though is that this tea has a Fujianese base, and I tried it a while ago before I discovered that I really like plain Fujianese blacks. So I am wondering why I didn’t care for this one as much? Well luckily I get to try this one again.

I am also hoping this wakes me up a bit because I got up way too early this morning and I am already exhausted. I just read my past tasting note and apparently I wanted to steep it longer this time… oops. Hmm, the steeped tea doesn’t smell the best to me. I’m wondering if there is something about the combination of the base and bergamot that doesn’t work with my palate. I think I can smell a bit of the base that I recognize now, but they just don’t seem to work well here. Also the bergamot smells kind of like cleaning solution, which is not something I ever experience with bergamot. It’s got a weird high note that gives it a chemical aroma.

Surprisingly, it tastes better than it smells at this point. The flavor seems to be primarily the weakish base, which I do get some nice malty, grainy, honey notes from, though it pales in comparison to some of the other fujian blacks I’ve tried recently. Then this sharp, almost metallic bright note comes winging in from nowhere. It is definitely from the bergamot, but I don’t get a very much of the citrusy, slightly floral flavors I love about bergamot. Yeah, this definitely isn’t the Earl for me, and I think it has everything to do with the bergamot they use… for whatever reason, it just doesn’t taste right to me. Not to mention there’s not enough of it! And now I am reminded of that joke from Annie Hall… “Boy, the food at this place is really terrible.” “Yeah, I know. And such small portions!”

But seriously, I can see how this might really appeal to some, but it’s just not to my tastes. I actually don’t think it’s a base-bergamot thing that I dislike, but maybe it is. I won’t know unless I find another fujian-base Earl, and they’re not super common.

I can’t quite love this one, either. I won’t be replacing mine. I like the tea base, but something is slightly off in the bergamot for me.

Thank you to TeaEqualsBliss for sending me a bit of this tea!

This is a REALLY good Earl Grey. So much so, that it may just give Lupicia and Steven Smith a run for their money.

The flavor is crisp. The bergamot tastes like fruit – not like perfume, not like soap. This has a really fruity essence that many Earl Grey teas lack. A brisk black tea base.

Really, really delicious! This one is going on my shopping list because I MUST have more!

K S

I can’t figure out their website. How do you know the prices? This sounds like something I would enjoy. No earl green though :(

LiberTEAS

I think that the Earl Grey is temporarily out of stock? That’s how I interpreted not being able to determine the prices on the Earl Grey, because I did find prices for other teas and the ability to add them to the cart, and the Earl Grey did not have the add to cart button. So… that’s what I’m thinking anyways!

This is really nice! A really nice Earl Grey! Not overly strong. It’s not artificial tasting and the bergamot is perfectly done to my liking. It’s juicy and just GOOD.

Thanks Kristin for this one!!!

This tea tastes really balanced to me. Definitely citrusy, but not overwhelmingly so. And it’s not bitter at all, but I can still taste the black tea. It’s not a tea that made me go “Wow, I’ve never had anything like this!” but rather, “Yes, this is what Earl Grey should taste like.” :-)

I didn’t add any cream or sugar, but I did eat it with a slice of chocoflan. It paired really nicely with the heaviness of the cake and the creaminess of the flan, and I could taste the bergamot more after eating some of the chocoflan. Mmm… I definitely want to buy more of this to use as my dessert tea…
