From thepuriTea

Our Jasmine Golden Yunnan Buds black tea combines the sweet, chocolaty flavor of our Golden Yunnan with the delicately peppery, floral notes of our Jasmine Silver Needle. It’s made from the fully oxidized buds (or “tips”) of the tea plant, and then aromatized and blended with fragrant jasmine petals. When dry, the tippy, golden buds smell of rich dark chocolate, while the tiny, pale jasmine petals are seductively aromatic and pungent. The deep umber brew has an aroma that’s chocolaty, lightly peppery and topped with fleeting jasmine notes. The sophisticated, mellow flavor of jasmine melds seamlessly with the flavors of chocolate and pepper inherent to Yunnan black tea, making this a fantastic alternative for jasmine lovers and a great choice for fans of flavored black teas. Jasmine Yunnan Golden Bud’s aftertaste is lightly astringent, and later infusions retain the rich flavor of Yunnan black tea. For a special treat, pair this elegant blend with brunch foods, anything with dark chocolate, or coconut macaroons.

Second tea of the morning….. (SRP#12)

After seeing Amanda’s tasting note on this that it reminded her of Cadbury Mini-Eggs (my all time favorite chocolate…so thankful it is seasonal!) I had to pull out my sample and give it a try. Anything close to my favorite chocolate in tea form has to be in my possession at some point!

She is right. I get notes of chocolate and the floral of the jasmine just comes across as sweetness. I have to say that I really like this. It was on my shopping list before writing the tasting note. (Usually, I do the tasting note and then put it on my list, but if you can’t catch the subtlety in the order of events from someone who is usually pretty methodical about things……) Love this. Want. (But need to wait a bit. I may make this a reward tea of some kind. Now to work out the details of my quest/task!)

Usual teapot method. 5 minute steep.

I too love mini-eggs – only (in Canada at least) they are no longer seasonal! They are sold all year long now, this started last Easter or maybe the one before.

SimplyJenW

No, they can’t do that to me in the US! I cannot stay away from them for 2 months out of the year. How bad would it be for all 12? Ahhhhhhh.

Daisy Chubb

I’m sitting here, looking into a giant bag of mini eggs myself. Thank you, post Easter sale :)

Dinosara

At least a few years ago they sold mini-eggs in sphere form at Christmas time, calling them ornament balls or something, but I haven’t seen them in the past few years I don’t think. Though I haven’t looked in a Walgreens, either, which was the only place I found them. I do have a bag of mini-eggs waiting for me when I get home from Asia… :D

I have so many samples from thepuriTea that I haven’t tried yet! This is one of them, my first jasmine black. I’ve always been intrigued by jasmine blacks, and I do tend to love yunnan golden buds, so I was glad when this one came back into stock right around the same time as the milk oolong, just in time for black friday.

The dry leaf on this one smells pretty much just jasminey; I can’t really detect the golden buds underneath. The directions called for a longer steep time than I usually use with black teas, but I bumped my usual 3 minutes up a bit just to see how it goes. The tea steeped up pretty dark and has a lovely jasmine aroma underlain by a slightly chocolatey, slightly toasty black tea scent. It’s a very nice tea, though not anything that blows me away. The jasmine is nice and fresh and not perfumy, but I’m wishing for a more robust golden yunnan flavor. I’ve recently had a few flavored golden yunnans, and I want more of the chocolatey, caramelly flavor in this one. I think I’ll also drop back to my usual 3 minutes, because while it’s not bitter or anything, it is a bit astringent (which they claim is the jasmine in the description, but I’ve never found jasmine astringent) and I think I’ll like it a little better steeped shorter.

It’s sad when you discover a tea you really like and then the company discontinues it, or in this case the company goes out of business!

I haven’t had this in a while because I’ve been hoarding it a bit. The sweetness of the golden yunnan mixes so well with the natural jasmine. I really don’t like jasmine teas that are overly perfume-y and drying. This hits the sweet spot for me. A nice, gentle way to wake up!

This does sound really great.

I may need to try this one to see how it compares: http://www.silkroadteas.com/servlet/the-661/Jasmine-Jewel/Detail

Anna

You should! I’d love to read the comparison. I’m going to try as many new jasmines as I can this year.

I’ve got way too much tea I haven’t tried, so I put everything I haven’t had into its own box, so I can pull out new things to try, like so.

I got this as a sample with my order ages ago. I became attached to thepuriTea’s gunpowder tea through a sample so I don’t know why I haven’t had any of the others I got until now.

This is different, I’m so used to jasmine with green or white tea! When I opened the packet, it smelled really good and very unique. I had to look to Steepster for now to steep it, so I went with 4 minutes like most of the reviews said.

I’d just been eating some of those Cadbury mini eggs, and I hadn’t even noticed if there was the remains of any before I took a sip. It was like I had just eaten one again! This is chocolatey and floral at the same time. The black tea and the jasmine are really well balanced. I’m always afraid of jasmine taking over, but it’s perfect here.

The last note of the tea is pepper, and it almost tickles the tongue as the taste fades away before you just really need another sip.

In the future I may purchase some of this, because it’s really enjoyable and even relaxing.

I think I have a sample of this somewhere, too. You had me at Cadbury Mini-
Eggs. I am so glad Easter is over and they are all sold out until next year…. :D

momo

The Target near my apartment has tons of bags still and it’s horrible. I bought one yesterday and I just realized I need a few things, and now I’m going to end up with another. Sigh.

SimplyJenW

Must. Not. Buy. More. (At least tell yourself this a few times while you are at the store, maybe it will work…)

Oh… how wonderful this is. I should not be surprised, as I tend to love anything I try from thepuriTea. But, this is absolutely FABULOUS!

My love of jasmine started with pearls, and since that time I have discovered jasmine silver needles which I think I love even more than pearls … and now, I may have found a new favorite jasmine! The way the jasmine and golden yunnan play together is so perfect. The jasmine highlights the spice notes of the yunnan in a way that I don’t think I would have noticed without the jasmine. A delightful synergy!

LiberTEAS

2nd infusion is just as lovely as the first. It is a little smoother, and I notice that the yunnan stands out more now, with the jasmine coming in as a lighter flavor. Still incredible. I really love this tea.

Very tasty, I am noticing that trend with this company. I also am finding that all their teas have one thing on common. They are all well balanced and taste like what they should, at least so far. I found this on to be a solid tea. The Yunnan and Jasmine do so well together. You have to try it to understand it and it will be going into my “Shopping Cart”

I followed a link from the Miscellaneous Sales thread, because who here is NOT interested in checking out new-to-them tea companies? And while browsing the black tea selection I found a word I never thought I would see associated with black tea outside of my own blendings: JASMINE. A BLACK TEA with JASMINE. I was amazed. I love blending my green jasmine teas with my black rose and chocolate teas but I never thought I’d see a TEA COMPANY blend JASMINE with a BLACK TEA. Can you tell how amazed I was? And then I got to TASTE it…..blissful sigh

1st infusion: 4 minutes, boiling water
The color of the steeped liquor is a brown-ish amber, nothing spectacular, but the FLAVOR…mellow, malty, jasmine. Actually, it reminds me of the Black Locust trees that are currently in bloom, the full, white, fragrant blossom clusters buzzing with bees and butterflies.

2nd infusion: 6 1/2 minutes, boiling water
The color is the same, the flavor just a bit mellower.

I think I can get another infusion from this. Will update later if I do.

I never would have thought to combine jasmine with a Yunnan tea. I do like the idea, but this one’s a first for me. I received this in a swap and as my message box and my own memory are failing me at the moment, I cannot remember who sent this to me. I apologize, but thank you nonetheless!

Sipping… this one is very interesting. The first thing that I taste is the jasmine. It’s definitely nice and sweet — I like that it’s not stinky as it sometimes can be. It’s awfully strong, though. It stays present throughout the entire sip, but lets the Yunnan peek through every once and a while.. but just barely. The Yunnan is rather weak and tries to tone down the floral notes, but only manages to be present on the tongue for a matter of seconds. The jasmine takes over in the end and contributes a honey-like sweetness for a memorable finish.

This is a nice and unique combination of jasmine and Yunnan. I wish that the jasmine could be toned down a bit so that the Yunnan could shine through. Yunnan is such a nice tea on its own that it’s hard to see why you’d want to add anything else that could potentially mask its natural flavors. This would be a nice choice for anyone who loves jasmine, but might want a different take on the tea base.

Fjellrev

Oh yeah, jasmine can so easily take over, it seems.

QueenOfTarts

Incendiare- completely agree! It’s such a nice flavor when it doesn’t take over, but sometimes… it’s like drinking a flower bed.

Fjellrev

Seriously!

This is really making me happy tonight! This tea is smooth like you would get from Jasmine Pearl green tea, but there is a slightly malty punch from the Yunnan that surprisingly makes a nice match. I’m not sure this would be a tea that I would purchase, but I’ll happily drink my sample.
