From The Essence of Tea

After drinking so many mediocre examples of 90’s puerh teas recently, these cakes have really revived my faith in aged puerh. These cakes were ordered by a Hong Kong tea merchant in 1991 from Menghai tea factory as a higher than normal quality 7542 blend. They were placed into traditional storage for several years without wrappers, before being taken out and wrapped for sale. They were bought by a Malaysian tea merchant in 2003 and have been stored since then in Malaysia.

This combination of light traditional Hong Kong storage, followed by 10 or so years in Malaysia has produced an incredibly clean tea, with deep aged flavours and a vibrant, complex flavour and mouthfeel. This is definitely one of the best stored examples from this era that I have ever come across. It’s origins of traditional Hong Kong storage are barely detectible when drinking the tea & the dry leaves display an oily sheen that only comes with very clean storage.

I guess I don’t need to say any more, but I can say that these cakes are really a refreshing taste of a certain quality of aged puerh tea that is very difficult to find anywhere for sale. I can highly recommend it.

This tea, being a factory production, does not walk in beauty.
It does not go gentle into the good night.
Its flavor was perfectly adequate. Enjoyable, even. No hint of questionable storage of either the excessively damp nor murderously arid varieties. Good color, good nose, good aftertaste, acceptable huigan.

What really stood out for this tea, which is regrettably unavailable I believe, was the feeling. If I were to make totally unfounded suppositions (and when, really, do I not?), I would say that it made me feel like a beloved pet in the lap of its master, being stroked and fed treats. The sort of contentment that essentially no longer exists upon reaching adulthood, in which you feel all is right with the universe.

So would I recommend it, were such a recommendation even actionable? Of course not! I can’t even be sure I’ll get the same feelings from a second session with the same tea, much less anyone else.

But I’d recommend you give it a go, if you get a chance. Any chance to feel that pleased is well worth one’s time.

I Decided to go with the classic 7542 this morning. This tea is a 1991 sheng that I was lucky enough to pick up from David at EoT. During the breaking process, I immediately notice how beautiful the leaves are… most are intact and very few, if any at all, are chopped. Wonderful craftsmanship. The wet leaves produce a beautiful dark red broth… a colour that brings a sweet cup of Port to mind. A primary woody aroma with fruity and spicy notes emanates from the bowl. A very pleasing nose I must say. Signs of traditional storage is apparent from the nose. In the mouth, the broth is smooth, has a thick body and has an aged sweetness that lingers in the throat. There is a strong chaqi with this tea as only a few cups (40 mL each) have seem to put me in a meditative state. An excellent example of an aged 7542. Definitely think an 88/100 is a fair assessment.
