From Teavivre

Tightly curly type, sweet aroma

The Zhuye trees used for making this tea were grown at high elevation, with only one bud with one or two leaves used in the tea itself. The premium material picked offers a clear, golden-yellow color with a smooth, mellow, sweet taste, more complex than one would originally realize: there is a long-lasting roasted sweet potato flavor that lingers afterwards. When touched, the brewed leaves of this tea are soft, delicate, and supple.

Many thanks to Angel for sending me samples of this wonderful tea. I was initially hesitant, anticipating smoke from this Keemun, but jackpot. No smoke. Whew. The dry leaves are wispy and curled. Delicate. I’ve had this twice now—both yesterday morning and now—both only steeped once both times, so for now, I can’t say how it would resteep.

Keemun Aromatic Snail has a thinner mouthfeel and minimal astringency. I don’t pick up on sweet potato so much. It’s sooner grainier than potato-y to my palate. Starchy, nonetheless. The grains are drizzled in honey.

This makes me sad that I still haven’t tried the Yun Nan Dian Hong Black Tea (Golden Tip) and Superfine Tan Yang Gong Fu Black that I ordered a year-and-a-half ago. Luckily, they are still sealed, but it breaks my heart that they’re packed away just sitting there. Had I known that finding a steady job and getting my own place would take this long, I would have rescued them from the box last time I was at my mom’s house in the middle of nowhere last winter, since they’re still there. I’ve been craving those kinds of teas lately too, so this Keemun has really helped!

Taking a break from exploring Clock Town in Termina. Decided to try one of my Teavivre samples. (Liked the spiral leaves.) The brew smells so good. There is a scent of sweet potatoes, and some honey. It has a nice honey flavour. And the sweet potato is still present. Very good. Goes well with banana bread.

A sample from a recent tiny order! Thanks again for everything, Teavivre! This tea was intriguing, with the leaves of the silky, dark black, curly type. The fragrance of the dry leaves is just like the flavor: like a sweet, smooth molasses with hints of honey. Also with hints of tanginess that I have been loving in teas lately. One of my favorite types of tea! The unraveled leaves in the infuser are very big. The flavor strength is medium, neither too strong or light. Definitely not as strong flavored as most ‘snail’ types of tea that I’ve tried before. And definitely not smoky like I’d expect keemun to be. The second steep was more mild flavored. I wish there had been more levels or detail or depth to the flavor, but maybe steeping it differently would result in the way I wanted it.

Water: 12oz

Leaves: tiny curled glossy leaves

Amount:1.5 tsp (light) 2 tsp (strong)

Steep: 3m

Aroma: Classic black tea

Color: golden yellow, copper (light), red copper (strong)

Clarity: Great

Taste: The really cool thing about this tea are the leaves they had a glossy finish to them. I haven’t encountered this with any other teas. I decided to do something different with this tea brewing it using two different methods dealing with light & strong flavors. Reverse method the first cup i went with a strong brew using the information i found on the Steepster blog “Tips for Measuring Dry Tea Leaf” which stated using 1.5tsp or 2tsp for 10/12oz. As stated i went with 12oz the cups was a red copper color, the texture was was very smooth mouth feel. The flavor was light but a bit bitter. On to the light brew the color was brighter it starts off as a golden yellow then deepens as more tea enters the cup. Tast wise it was the same as the previous cup but with no bitterness. It was fun trying out a different method with this tea. which lead to a more in-depth review.

Here is a mini behind the scenes story that took place as i was making the second brew:

I already had added my 1tsp into my french press then i measured out my 1/2tsp. once done i was about to add the leaves into the press when some how my left hand bumped the spoon sending tea all over the kitchen counter. so i had to clean up then re-measure it.

This is one of the free samples that I chose with my Black Friday order so that you Teavivre! I really enjoy Keemun teas, and this one is no exception. The snails are so pretty, dark and all curled up. I like watching them unfurl in my Steeper. The brewed tea is fairly dark.

The aroma is of baked sweet potatoes and it also translates into the taste as well. The mouthfeel is smooth with a slightly sweet aftertaste.

This tea is fairly expensive and there are other Teavivre Keemuns that I enjoy more than this offering, so it won’t become part of my permanent cupboard but I am happy to have tried it and certainly would not refuse a cuppa.

A few years ago, my daughter, Superanna, bought some teas I had been wanting for me for my birthday. I was surprised and asked how she knew I wanted them and she said that she had checked my Steepster wishlist.

This year, no longer content to stalk me via wish list, she contacted Mary Bao at Teavivre and asked her to put together a recommended gift list based on my reviews and likes, and Mary came through in a big way! WOW!

This is one of the teas I received. I had tried a sample of it once and it is even better than I remembered. I made it Sunday morning while my future daughter-in-law, ChelseaR, and I were having a chat as I ate breakfast. I showed her the adorable little spirals before steeping. So cute, but meaningless unless the tea is good.

One would usually be distracted by the conversation and not notice one’s tea as much, but this one stopped me in my tracks.

Oh my, that first sip! Golden raisin flavor, bright, molasses, honey, sunshine, thick – I stammered and had to restrain myself from growling sweet nothings into my cup that may have been perceived as naughty and strange by my company. This had layers of flavor to dive into and explore.

Thank you, Superanna, for all the tea, and thank you, Mary Bao, for going above and beyond in customer service. Thank you, Teavivre, for furnishing these tea heads on here with high quality, affordable tea.

That was incredibly sweet. Happy birthday!
