From TeaSource

This semi-ball oolong tea is on the “green” side of oolong teas. It produces a cup that is extremely aromatic. The liquor is sweet, floral (think lilacs), and silky with a tiny bit of a mineral note just to make it interesting. It also has a little more body than most “green” oolongs.

The leaves for this lovely oolong were plucked on May 13, 2018 and the tea was made by Mr. Lin Rui Fu of Huqiu town in Anxi County, Fujian, China. This is a Huang Jin Gui style oolong, which are known for producing wonderfully fragrant teas, but sometimes with lighter body.

Busting out the aroma cup set for this session. The only steeping guidelines on the bag are for western-style but I prefer my oolongs gong fu style. Experimenting with tea gives you a better sense of what parameters the tea is best suited to. It’s harder to do that with western style unless you have a cupping set made for tasting. The inital smell is full of lilacs and orchids. While the wet leaf is reminiscent of a rainforest after a light rain with slight butter. My first steeping wasn’t long enough. Only did about 30 seconds, which usually is enough to decipher something but the hot tea didn’t give me much. Ah, now that is has cooled it begins to shine. Vegetal and little butter slight mineral in the aftertaste. The second steep is better and ripe with heavy orchid aroma from the aroma cup.

This was a bit of an impulse purchase, based mostly on the lovely name. (Who wouldn’t want to drink a cup of “Golden Dawn”?) I’ve loved some of TeaSource’s other oolongs (their milk oolong and Honey Formosa come to mind) but this one just isn’t my favorite flavor profile. It’s VERY floral (feels like a mouthful of buttery flower petals while you’re drinking it) and also has a slightly coppery aftertaste that I find rather off-putting. That being said, it’s obviously a high quality tea; the leave are large, bright green, and very fragrant. Hoping I can pass this one on to someone else who will appreciate it more than I do!

I love TeaSource’s Brandy Oolong and Rhubarb Oolong. Staples for me!

Inkling

Ooo, I like the rhubarb oolong too; forgot about that one! I’ve never tried the brandy oolong, so I may need to give it a shot one of these days. :)
