For some unknown reason, it has taken me a very long time to get to these TeaFrog samples…oh well

This herbal is decent – not too sweet from chocolate and not too spicy from spices. Infused hot, no additives 7 minutes. Each sip is a complicated dance of flavors. It starts with peppercorn then melts into chocolate then finally into ginger. The peppercorn provides an initial bite, a spicy kick that is quickly replaced with slightly sweet, smooth and creamy chocolate flavor, but not overwhelmingly chocolate, the chocolate is rounded out by cacao which helps to extend the flavor without adding sweetness, finally the ginger provides a little spice but true in depth flavor. Quite a mouthful…

I especially like that the tea is made of both chocolate and cacao – I think it deeps the chocolate flavor and enriches the tea overall because it is not sweet or savory, but a decent mix of the two that acts as a bridge between spicy pepper and vibrant ginger.

Great work TeaFrog.

This was the free additional sample included with my TeaFrog sampler order. Seeing that the base was chicory, I was a little hesitant about it, as that’s not my favorite flavor. However the chicory is really competing with all the other flavors in this mix: chocolate, red pepper, and ginger are all there in strength. There’s a natural sweetness to the liquor, which steeps up to a cloudy medium brown.

Surprisingly, adding milk and sugar brings out the chicory flavor more, but it also mellows out the peppery accents – it’s tasty this way too. I’m not sure I’d order more of this right away, but it was a nice new tisane to try out.

Oh, this note has triggered a Cafe du Monde craving for their chicory coffee. It’s one of the few coffees that I really want from time-to-time. I’ll definitely have to try a sample of this if and when I place another TeaFrog order :)

The flavor of chicory in general is one which hits my taste buds strongly – you might find it pretty tame in comparison to the flavor straight!

Out of all the TeaFrog samples that I ordered, this was one of the samples that I was the most excited about. I love all things chocolate and spice. In the pouch, this smells good enough to eat. Like a spicy chocolate pudding that’s heavier on the ginger.

Steeped, the aroma has already changed. The chicory hath emerged. Flavour-wise, this is also all about the chicory, although I can feel the slight burning sensation of the peppercorns and ginger at the back of my mouth. This is my first hot chicory beverage, so while I’m not used to it, I still think that it is nonetheless unique. I’m a bit disappointed that the chicory overpowers everything else though. I was hoping to get a balanced symphony of chocolate, spice, and chicory. No dice.

The more I drink this, the more I taste the ginger, though. It’s a nice change from what I usually drink but I’m grateful that TeaFrog offers sample sizes because I wouldn’t personally invest in a full-size pouch of this. I have my eye on other TF teas when it comes to upgrading, though!
