From Teabox

An estate with 180 years of tea lineage to its credit, Chubwa is indisputably one of the finest producers of Assam teas.
And this summer black tea from estate offers a fair testimony to the high-quality standards the estate has come to be associated with. Overarching flavors of dates, walnut and honey can be relished in the aroma as well as the taste of the brew. These sweet notes are pleasantly balanced by a mild hit of palate astringency, making the overall experience of the brew highly satiating.

AROMA
Dates, pine, walnut, hint of peach
APPEARANCE
Deep reddish-brown
TASTE
Round sweetness, astringent, robust body, high notes of sweet dates, walnut, honey, and hint of peach

2 tsp for 250mL water @90C, steeped five minutes, as per recommendation on packet. Drunk plain.

Picking date: 29 July 2020.

Dry leaf: small and twisted dark brown leaves with some amber.

Wet leaf: Light and dark brown with a few twigs.

Liquor: medium copper, just gorgeous in a clear glass mug. Aroma gives up raisins, berries, and florals, as promised. Malty but no strip-your-mouth-dry astringent. It tastes … deep. I know that sounds silly, but I feel like this tea has ancestry and history. Not bitter. Some honey notes. I love it.

Tea with a backstory. Love it.

The Chubwa estate is something like 180 years old, one of the first British-planted tea gardens in India. It’s a lovely Assam.

Thanks for sharing the link—what a nice little sneak peek into plantation life! (I will never cease to be entertained and fascinated by Indian tea estate names!)

This is a very classic example of an Assam. The leaves are really nice to look at and particularly tippy with a gold strand on most leaves. Too bad they are on the smaller side and that I’ve been made snob by Taiwan Assams.

The liquor itself is malty, strong, a bit astringent with a little bit of dry fruit sweetness. I get the pine they describe in the smell and partially in the astringency. Honey is a bit more distinguishable along with the walnut. But honestly, it just tastes like tea. It would do well with rock sugar or honey pared with cream. Assam is a bit too strong for my preferences anyway.
