From Tea Side

Origin: Thailand
Harvest: October 2018
Elevation: 1300 m
Cultivar: Ruan Zhi (TRES #17)

This is a vivid example of a classic autumn Dong Ding oolong, delicately crafted with a good understanding of taste and the end result. During storage, the tea was warmed up twice: in September 2019 and in January 2020. It turned out smooth and mild, without a hint of excess fire.

On the palate, there are rich and creamy notes, tropical fruits, honey, flowers. Fruit and honey reminiscent of Gui Fei, but only at first glance.

This Dong Ding is almost impossible to overbrew, it remains soft and gentle through all the tea session. Partly due to the specificity of the autumn material, but mainly due to the masterful processing. This is easily seen by steeped leaves: an even dark olive leaf color, the twist gently unfolds into solid flushes.

For those who love soft and sweet oolongs. For those who value classical processing and do not pursue the brutal intensity of tastes.

A fairly simple and reliable tea, but it lacks something that would elevate it above similar teas meant for casual drinking.

The dry leaf aroma is flowery with notes of baked apples and stonefruits. After the rinse, the scent reminds me of macaroons and other biscuits, as well as olives. Then, in the empty cup, I mostly get a sweet florals.

The taste is mineral with strong honey notes and flavours of persimmon and mint tea, without the cooling sensation of the latter. The aftertaste is actually a little cooling and also brings hints of lemon zest into the picture.
