Thanks to the plantation that’s located in the deep mountain environment with opulent sunshine exposure, our GABA tea material comes the 100% Jin Xuan varietal from Alishan area with a incomparable quality.

This is a heavily roasted version of our popular GABA oolong with about 30% of oxidation. It has a very distinctive character thanks to the extra roasting time and technique, and the roast gives it a very strong note which is very unique for a heavily roasted tea. If you are a fan of heavily roasted oolong tea fan such as Tie Guan Yin but want something that is able to calm your mind, then this will definitely be the oolong you are looking for!

GABA stands for Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, and the content of this tea is aournd 400 mg per 100 grams which is higher than most of the GABA tea in the market. Through a series of research, Japanese scholar Omori Masashi ( 大森 正司 ) confirmed it has a very powerful antihypertensive effect thanks to its extremely high content of γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) compared to other teas. The GABA content adds a thick layer of baked sweet potato taste to the tea and is proven to offer the drinker a soothing or relaxing feeling. GABA processing, which involves shade growing and then nitrogen sparging was developed by the Japanese and later perfected by the Taiwanese. The result is a tea that tastes great, at once stimulating and soothing to the nervous system.

I love high mountain Taiwanese oolongs. Roasted ones, like this guy, don’t quite do as much for me. But this one also tastes a little odd. Maybe it’s the GABA processing. Maybe it’s how they roasted it. Maybe it’s something else. I like the calming properties of the GABA, but the tea otherwise isn’t much of a treat.

This tea was very good. It was heavily roasted. The roast profile was prominent for about six steeps. There was a sweeter note that began to emerge about this time. The roast profile was still noticeable for another four steeps. Only in the last two steeps was this sweet note the main note. Another reviewer mentioned notes of buttery and cream. I suppose that is one valid interpretation of the sweet note that was behind the roast. I did notice the GABA starting in steep eight. Overall I liked this tea.

I steeped this tea twelve time in a 120 ml gaiwan with 7.9g leaf and 190 degree water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min.

What did the GABA feel like for you?

Sort of a pleasant light headedness is the best way I can describe it. A mild euphoria too. None real strong mind you.

This tea is delicious! Very floral and buttery. Hardly any bitterness, it is mellow and satisfying with a delightful aroma. It brought to mind toasted coconut and honeysuckle. It feels thick in the mouth, and nourishing. I could drink it often. Brewed Gong Fu style, 5 grams in a 60ml gaiwan. Washed for 15 seconds, first infusion 15 seconds, 2nd infusion 20-25 seconds, and so on.
