From Stash Tea

Our interpretation of this classic Indian drink blends rich, flavorful Indian black teas with cinnamon, clove, ginger and cardamom. The brewed tea is very aromatic, with a flavor that is slightly sweet, strong, and penetrating, with lingering notes of almond. This tea is excellent plain or with milk (regular or evaporated) and sweetener. It is exceptional any time of day-as a rich morning cup, an enjoyable dessert tea, or as a special treat.

Some of the finest black tea in the world comes from India, the world’s leading producer of tea. Included in these teas are the robust Assams, muscatel Darjeelings and well-balanced Nilgiris. However, most tea consumed in India is not enjoyed for its subtle flavor nuances, but instead is blended with sweet and pungent spices to make chai.

Chai is usually brewed very strong, often concentrated, with lots of sugar and milk. Traditional Indian chai combines rich black tea that is boiled in milk with local spices such as cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and occasionally black peppercorns, ginger, and red chilies. The drink is then sweetened with sugar.

Was given some of this in a new tea chest I bought. I really enjoyed it. Steeped one bag in a large mug about 3/4 full for about 5 min. Added a generous ~1 tbsp squeeze of honey and some unsweetened almond milk. It is mild for a chai but overall one of the best bagged chai’s I have tired. Will have to go buy some as I only have 1 sample left.

I’m still a tea noob, but of all the chai I’ve had this tastes the least like chai. I’ve had Twinings, Panera’s version and a few other iced versions of the tea just so there is a baseline I have for tasting chai. This tastes a bit like a mint toothpick. Not bad per se, but not something I’d expect.

This is my new chai! I know it is not the best quality, and it is a grocery store tea, and it does come out a little bland if I don’t do it right. But it tastes good, bottom line. I add plenty of milk and a bit of honey.

I noticed more cinnamon than anything, I like cinnamon but I was expecting the other usual chai spices. That said it was enjoyable, just not what I was expecting.

This is tea 21/50 I bought in a Stash Assortment. I have come to enjoy most of the chais in this collection since the the flavors are light and I is not my favorite. Sadly, it did not work as a black tea or a chai.

I read some of the other reviews, saying that this tea was weak. I didn’t find that at all. To the contrary, I found that it was too strong for my liking. Granted, it’s likely my own fault. I always drink my tea with the bag in so I always end up over-steeping. I also just don’t care for black tea all that much. I bet that if I used my Silk Coffee Creamer in this tea, it would be a whole lot better. All the usual chai flavours were there but the black tea base was so astringent and heavy. I prefer a more nuanced blend. I’m likely too picky for my own good but I can’t help it, I like what I like! I only have 4 or 5 bags left of this so soon I’ll be done with it for good and it won’t be a re-purchase in the future.

I noticed I had one teabag of this stashed away so it’s time for another bagged tea revisit… and a sipdown! I have vague memories of drinking this a lot before I really got into tea as a hobby, but I’m unsure how I’ll feel about it now that I frequently drink loose, whole leaf chais. Time to find out! As per usual, I removed the bag and infused in my gravity well infuser, since I don’t like the papery-taste the bags seem to leave in the water.

Eeh… Well, I actually quite liked the black base, and I often tend to find bagged blacks too astringent for my tastes. This was a strong tea, with only some mild astringency, but it was not bitter and I found it pretty pleasant. The chai spices, however, just tasted off. There was a very heavy clove flavor which seemed to dominate the whole cup, with a slight hint of some cinnamon and ginger flavors on the back of my tongue in the aftertaste. If it had more balance between the spice flavors, this wouldn’t be too bad, but the heaviness of the clove ruins the whole cup. I do recall that I used to always drink my tea sweetened, and admittedly, some sugar did help ground some of the overpowering clove notes a bit, and improve the cuppa some. Just not really enough that I’d care to have it again.

I was feeling adventurous when I tried this tea, but I don’t think I’ll be trying another cup of this one. The cinnamon can get overwhelming.

I think their Holiday Chai is better.
