Vlak tegen de evenaar ligt Sri Lanka, waar het hele jaar door thee wordt geoogst. De thee is meestal gekwalificeerd naar hoogte: hoe hoger, hoe beter. De Balangoda is middelhoog gegroeid en heeft een groot blad. Iets krachtig en soepel.
