From Short and Stout

Darjeeling tea is a tea from the Darjeeling region in India. It is available as black, white or oolong. Darjeeling Tea is widely known as the finest tea or ‘champagne of teas’ because of its unique muscatel grape flavor that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. Darjeeling has altogether three major flushes, which are first flush, second flush, and Autumnal flush (third flush).

In particular to the second flush Darjeeling, the tea leaves are harvested during the second growing season between June- mid August. It is noted for its unique muscatel grape flavor and distinctive floral aroma, which some say is derived from the plant’s reaction to a small insect that sucks fluids from the stems of the tea plant.
The tea has dark color and strong flavor in contrast to first flush teas

I have only tried Darjeelings in bags and never as a loose leaf tea. I am really impressed with the complexity of this tea. It has a floral and almost musty taste, which is really pleasant. I definitely taste the muscatel flavor, and it is almost wine-like. It’s second steep is not as flavorful, but still nice. I am really glad I tried this, and will likely try more second flush Darjeelings in the future.
